Re: [Soekris] Net4801 BIOS System Parameters Documentation

2008-08-22 Thread Bill Maas
Hi Lars,

take a look at the comBIOS changelog on the "downloads" page at
soekris.com:

http://www.soekris.com/software/changelog.txt

It should contain basic but usable info about new comBIOS features
integrated after the manuals were published.

So everyone is now happy with their 5501s ? Is it safe to buy them now ?

My net4801 has been mounted to the closet wall and running fine for the
last couple of years, so I haven't had anything to talk about. I will

OpenBSD has no firmware for keyspan adapers that need firmware.

These will be running OpenBSD.
I'll keep the Keyspan adapters in mind, but they do have 3 physical
parts. Firmware is a fourth part...

Right now of the 1-piece units, I see this one:

It uses the "prolific" chipset, for what that's worth. If that does not

Yes, this one works under Linux pretty well. I'm not sure about support

Ok. Great. That can be the lower-boundary.

In the search for n serial ports with n+1 ethernet,
maybe one of these could be used:
http://www.usbgear.com/USBG-4X232FTDI.html
... plus the flat cable on a
net5501 with a lan1641 added, that would give 8 ethernet, plus 6 serial
(4 serial on the USB cable + the 2 built-in)

you just need to get a cheap flat cable like:

http://soekris.kd85.com/images/dsc07647.jpg

and make sure it's just a bit longer than 25 cm, then it fits into the default
soekris 5501 1 slot case:

http://soekris.kd85.com/images/dsc07648.jpg

Same way, you can also use the second USB port or even have an eSATA
connector for external storage:

http://soekris.kd85.com/images/dsc07654.jpg

(the SATA connector should have a 90 degree angle, I just put it in there for
testing, it actually is a perfect fit for the Kerberos rackmounted case:
 http://soekris.kd85.com/images/dsc07627.jpg )

It seems it might be cheaper to go with 4 port serial card and deal with
the extra ethernet connections with a small hub.

I've been mostly able to remain blissfully ignorant about hardware, what
low-end hubs are recommendable and might fit in the same case with a
soekris?

One case, one power supply would be a real bonus.
Failing that, one case with a lot of junk jammed in would be suffice.

Worst case would be separate pieces for everything.

Scaling back, the net5501 has two serial ports, one DB9 external and one
10-pins internal. Is it available with two external DB9's?

there is various weird hardware on the market:

Serial to Ethernet CONVERTER - 4 port
RS232/422/485 - 10/100 Mbps

or what you are looking for:

USB TO 7 PORT RS-232 DB9M (there is also a 4 port version I think)

For a picture, see http://soekris.kd85.com/images/sunix-7port-serial2usb.jpg

In your case you could use a quad ethernet port with a 5501, giving
you 7 + 1 ethernet ports + a USB 2 serial for 7 serial ports. There is
also one extra serial port onboard of the soekris that you could use.

Downside is that is all becomes a bit of a cable salad, or you have to
put everything in a rackmounted case
