[Soekris] Some General Advice?
Hi Folks, Brand new to the list so first of all Happy New Year! I want to take my current NOISY rack mounted firewall and make it QUIET. J And it's time for an upgrade/change so I started looking around for small, quiet alternatives to my current setup. I ended up here, for better or worse J and I think better after scanning through the archives. I hope to be able to help as well at some point. I currently have a HP rack in a room in my basement. I work from home and the current system needs to be quieted down. I can either put my current hardware in a (more or less) soundproof rack enclosure -or- I can go the SSD small form factor route which I am more attracted to. Long term plan is to run a personal web site (or more as I have multiple IP addy's available) as well as the normal stuff - VPN into work, NAT, etc. Ok, so I am looking at the following: Soekris net5501 OpenBsd 4.8 And need advice on the following: Best power supply for this device? SSD or 2.5 HD? Anything else I need to know or think about? I've been doing this stuff for 25 years and since technology changes faster than I change my socks J I KNOW I need some advice. Currently the HD I am looking at is the Fujitsu MHW2120BK which I can find on Amazon for about US$98.00. Or is SSD (and which brand/model?) a better approach? Essentially the question I would be asking is what is the BEST setup, best being defined as robust, hassle-free (as much as possible) and one that hits the 'sweet spot'? The device will be used as a firewall. Thanks! Apologies for the long post. And performance is not all that important since you only use the disk during (infrequent) boots? In that case, go with CompactFlash. No heat issues, no power supply issues, no cabling, no noise, etc. Cheers, Jan ___ Soekris-tech mailing list Soekris-tech@lists.soekris.com http://lists.soekris.com/mailman/listinfo/soekris-tech
