Re: [Soekris] Compatibility Issue w/ Soekris 5501 and Cisco 2640 Switch

2008-06-12 Thread Chuck (Doc) Beaudette
I should correct my earlier mail, the switch was a 2940 I wrote 2640.

It was not auto-neg or MDI/MDIX, because we tried every possible
combination. Replaced the 2940 this morning with a 2960 and problem solved.

Switch

When I replaced the 4801 with a new 5501, the throughput between the
Cisco 2640 and the Soekris router dropped to next to nothing. We tried
several different configurations (Auto negotiate, fixed 100mb
Full-Duplex, etc.), nothing seemed to make any difference. Finally, we
put a Netgear switch between the Cisco 2640 and the Soekris 5501 which
cleared the problem. The 2640 is an older swtich, so the next option
is try an upgrade to a 2660 switch then see if we can connect the Soekris
directly.

Anyone know of similar issues with the 5501?

Actually, I haven't used a 5501 yet, but I've had problems with the
4801 and a Cisco 2924 :

c2924-1 1265: May 23 23:01:41 EDT: %LINK-4-ERROR: FastEthernet0/16 is
experiencing errors

I have about 42 over a 3 week period. Its done this for 3 different
4801's I've had on the switch, and never for any other piece of equipment in
12 years of running ISPs using them. I've just put it down to Feeces
Occur.

Would like to hear more about your experiences as you find out about
it.

Thanks, Tuc

[Soekris] Dissapearing Interface on Mini-PC Slot

2007-03-29 Thread Chuck \(Doc\) Beaudette

I have run into an intersting anomoly and wonder if anyone else has seen
something similar.

I am using a net4501 w/ Mikrotik kernel. I installed a Ubiquiti XR2 wireless
card. When I power cycle the unit, the wireless card disappears in the
interface list. If I power off the unit, reseat the wireless card and power
back up, the interface returns to the list.

I originally thought this was a heat issue with the card because I was
originally using a Mikrotik R52 in a small case, but I have since had this
happen with mutliple wireless cards (using both XR2 and Mikrotik R52) and
with multiple net4501 boards in fan cooled large enclosures.

Hi Chuck,

We've had the same issue. The problem is with the comBIOS and how
it is handling the single chip Atheros chipset on the Ubiquity and other
Atheros single chip designs. Our experience on average was about 1 out of
30 power cycles the cards would not be initialized properly at/just after
POST though some boards seemed to be more frequent and some less frequent.

We sent a couple of cards to Soekris for them to experiment with and
hopefully come up with a fix for the soon to be released comBIOS 1.30
update.

Keep your fingers crossed.

And you can stop reseating the card, it doesnt really do anything
other than put wear on the card and the slot. Been there, done that. Only
thing we've found that really does the trick is to do a hard reset (ie
remove power and plug it back in) to correct the issue once it manifests as
soft resets from the BIOS monitor dont consistently clear the problem up.

Hope it helps
