[Soekris] net6501 + Transcend SSD + OpenBSD boot issues

2014-01-24 Thread David Paschal
Hi. Regarding Soren's message from March 2013:

I ended up also falling into this trap with the net6501-70 I just bought. In
my case, sometimes OpenBSD (5.4) boots successfully even if the BIOS doesn't
display the detected device model string, sometimes the BIOS fails to load the
OpenBSD bootloader, and sometimes the bootloader and kernel come up but can't
find the root file system, instead prompting me for which "em" network
device to use. It's unfortunate that Soekris continues to sell the Transcend
mSATA SSD without at least noting the known issues with it on the website, but
I guess I should have done more research before placing my order.

Fortunately, OpenBSD seems to boot reliably now that I reinstalled onto the
SanDisk Cruzer Fit that I also bought, but I was hoping for an SLC-based mSATA
device that would have a longer lifespan. Unfortunately, WD seems to have
gotten out of the SSD business, and I'm having trouble finding an SLC mSATA SSD
from another vendor besides Transcend (Micron/Crucial seem to be MLC-only). I
did find Cactus Technologies' recently-released "High Performance 900S Series
Industrial Grade mSATA" product
(http://www.cactus-tech.com/en/products/industrial-grade/msata/id-900s-series),
but they seem to focus on OEMs instead of selling directly to end-users such as
myself.

Has anybody had any success in finding an SLC mSATA SSD (either the Cactus 900S
or otherwise) that (1) is currently and readily available for purchase, and (2)
works reliably with the net6501 and OpenBSD?

Thanks,
David

The Intel 311 and 313 series mSATA SSD SLC drives work (20GB and
24GB). They're hard to find.

The 4GB KingSpec one I bought from Wim Vandeputte works fine.

(And yes, I also have a Transcend one that is flakey.)

+1 for KingSpec, I bought the 16GB one from Wim and it's been
humming along just fine on my 6501 (running FreeBSD).
