Interesting and thanks for the picture. Does anyone know if it's
possible that replace the passive cooling before the board breaks down?

At least after running now a day,
I can compare to the old passive cooler.

The new one is better, my net6501 is running about 5-6 degree cooler.
I've also noticed, that the EG20T chipset is a never revision (old rev 1, new
rev 2).

Soekris just replaced a 2+ year old net6501 of mine that had similar
symptoms. And there have been several similar cases mentioned on this list.

Just a quick update..
My soekris net6501 has been also now replaced.
All symptoms are gone and the new mainboard is working perfectly fine.

I've just noticed, that soekris did changed again the passive cooling.

Re: [Soekris] net6501 error led / no console / doesn't boot

2015-01-14 Thread Tom Weustink

I had a dead net6501-30 last september.
Worked fine since I got it in October 2011, but when I was switching back and
forth (trying out) m0n0wall and pfSense, it suddenly didn't want to boot
anymore.

Taking the power off for a few minuted made it work again, but it went worse
with every reboot.
I was able to enter the umanager, but it wouldn't boot anymore.

So I RMA'd mine with Soekris Europe and got a new one back.
The old one had the small back heatsink while the new one has a much larger
blank aluminum heatsink.

Tom

2015-01-13 Thread Andrew Atrens
Hopefully RMA'd boards will help Soekris folks analyse what's gone wrong
with the hardware and whether it can be worked around via BIOS update.

Since the devices don't show any warning symptoms (are running normally)
and the boot failures for some at least are initially intermittent,
there's a small chance there might be a different power on sequence that
the bios could implement to resusitate these boards. Relatedly, it might
be the power on sequence that the BIOS is employing that is frying
components and as such a newer, gentler start up might be able to
preserve existing boards.

Would be nice if someone on the soekris side could provide an update as
to what their current thinking is / what they advise customers should
do. Should we all RMA our dead net6501 boards straightaway? What's
the advice/plan?

2015-01-13 Thread Martin Dahlem
Hi

I have shipped in 4 boards with the exact same issue to soekris in Denmark last
week. And I have one more lying around with the error.
Some of our clients have seen this issue, where it suddenly stopped working,
and could then not boot back up. We have spend a lot of time to go out and fix
at random times, and replace the boards.
Sometimes after they have been turned off for a while they will boot again, but
then right after a power cycle, go dead again.
So I had gathered a few from our installations, and where beginning to become a
big problems as more of them die.

While they have this issue, it can normally also see the Ethernet diodes flash
randomly at low power.

They all have similar serial number, and have the black heatsink that is just a
flat plate.

Hi Conrad,

I did manage to get to uManager - that was sort of a baud issue - I'd up'ed my
baud rate to 115200 many moons ago and had forgotten about that .. tried a
number of times and finally came up with the correct incantation of power-cycle
and key presses. Used uManager to upload the newest bios into flash, which it
did. Browsed through flash and contents seemed reasonable. Then used that
bios uploaded into flash to
update the uManager itself, which incidentally also worked. So I
guess that means that flash is okay, as is the uManager. Can't say the same
for the bios or the board, though. Still same booting problems.
Apparently the hardware turns on the RED led and the bios turns it off once
it's ready launch the OS. I'm guessing something in the bios's board bring up
sequence is getting stuck - maybe it resets a device and then polls a register
forever or somesuch. - just a wild guess. Since there's no sign of any kind of
messages on the console I'm guessing it's getting stuck (presumably waiting for
unresponsive hardware) almost straightaway.

Let me know how your RMA goes - no sense in both of us paying for shipping if
it's a lost cause. :)

In the meantime I wouldn't suggest anyone with a production system
net6501 reboot it without having a ready spare. :)

2015-01-13 Thread Conrad Kostecki
I've already contacted my seller and he replied, that RMA should be possible
without any problems.
But currently, he is out of stock and waiting for new mainboards to arrive. So
my RMA is still waiting.

My net6501 is also running in a rack case.
Today, after several days without power, I've tried so start the net6501 again.
It also seems, after it was a time without any power, its starting again. But
only a few times, than the problems started again.

Running a net6501 with only onboard SSD and WiFi works in max 50/50 situation.
So not every start/reboot works. Sometimes it's completly dead again. When I
try to connect any PCIe-card or attaching a additional HDD, which was working
perfectly fine before those problems occurced, its even more worse. It's nearly
every try playing dead or not booting.

That sounds a little bit, like the mainboard has some troubles with the power.
At least I know, it's not the PSU, as I tried two different PSUs, which gave
the exact same results.

I've also measured the current power, as the manual states max 30w. When my
net6501 was able to boot without any problems, it showed about 10-15w max. So
this is far away from the max of 30w..

Cheers
Conrad

Hi Martin,

On my dead board I have not observed the ethernet leds flashing
randomly - I essentially get all synchronized flash when reset button is
pressed and then all ethernet leds off. That said, I wasn't watching it
too closely before it died :( ...

Since then I've been testing the dead board on my lab power supply -
it's the type with digital read-out where I can set voltage with a dial
and observe both voltage and current draw and I can say with confidence
that this problem is not related to power supply.

At the moment my backup board, a net5501, is working admirably .. my
config requires three or five 100BT or gigE ethernet ports .. not sure
what other fan-less alternatives there are out there ..

No change though on the boot .. I don't see any output after power cycling.

I think that that might rule out corrupted flash .. I guess that there
could be a failure bringing up comBIOS .. I guess most likely hardware
is nackered ..

Do I need an RMA, before I can mail this beastie back to Soekris?

Hi,

Soekris just replaced a 2+ year old net6501 of mine that had similar
symptoms. And there have been several similar cases mentioned on this list.

Following is a copy of the description that I sent to Soekris. They
just replaced the board; they never said what was wrong. Anyone from
Soekris want to tell us what this problem is?

/Lon

Brief description of problem:

Machine doesn’t (usually) even make it to POST. The Power and Error
LEDs go on, and then it hangs. uManager is accessible, but the “reset”,
“power cycle”, etc commands do not (usually) manage to clear the problem.

Detailed description of problem:

The problem first showed up some weeks ago, when rebooting for a
software update. Initially, using the “reset” command in uManager worked
to clear up the problem. But after a few reboots, it stopped having any
effect. I even tried reflashing the BIOS. This completed without
error, but did not have any effect on the problem.

After leaving the machine unplugged for several days, it did manage to
boot once. However, the problem returned almost immediately.

I have tried using a different power supply, with no effect. I tried
disconnecting all hardware (other than the console cable), also with no
effect.

The machine has been running behind a UPS, connected to network switches
that are also behind the UPS. I have not noticed any power surges that
might have damaged the machine. The failure just came “out of the blue”.

This appears to be the same problem reported on the mailing list a few
times, e.g.:

Re: [Soekris] net6501 error led / no console / doesn't boot

2014-12-19 Thread Andrew Atrens
Hi Alvar,

I’ve visually inspected the board and the caps all look good. In fact the
board, living as it has in a soekris case looks brand new. Apparently ‘no fan’
== ‘no dust’. So I’m going to rule failed cap.

I think it’s more likely the BIOS/firmware is toast. It’s a shame really, as
the board is otherwise perfect. :)

Wouldn’t it be nice if one could short a pin and have it reload
default/failsafe BIOS from a PROM. :) Failing that I suppose we’re in JTAG
country.

Does anyone know if soekris makes jig for that?

This is just an speculation - PSU on mainboard.
As you mentioned - thing worked more than 2 years. But without fan and on
standard case? So, one reason can be just an dried up electrolytic capacitor.
Something like those two large caps between coils, near USB connector.

[Soekris] net6501 error led / no console / doesn't boot

2014-12-18 Thread Andrew Atrens
Hi Folks,

My net6501 had been humming along happily since it arrived in 06/2012 .. I
don’t often need to restart it - the last time was 91 days ago following a
protracted power failure my UPS ran out of juice.

At any rate, last night I noticed that a file system had overflowed and so
deleted a bunch of files and restarted a few processes, the file space didn’t
come back straightaway and so I thought about restarting a few more things but
then it was late and had been a long day and so I thought I’d simply reboot it.

That was sort of a bad decision, as 4 hours later I finally got to bed.
Here’s what happened.

I rebooted and the board’s led’s cycled as normal but then only the power and
error led remained lit. The console was catatonic. My first thought was that
the attached SSD had calved, and so powered off, unplugged that, powered on.
Same result.

I then brought the unit over to my lab bench and hooked it up to my variable
power supply. Set the power balance at about 12v and powered on. Same. Held
the reset button down until the unit powered off. Released and held it in again
until the unit powered back on. Same result.

At 12v I then tried all of the console baud permutations - 9600, 19200, 38400,
57600 and 115200 to make sure that I wasn’t doing anything silly. Still no
output, and just the two leds - the power and the red error.

Grabbed a regular 2.5” laptop drive, plugged it in to the net6501 and powered
on again. The drive spun up, no problem.

Took the SSD used in the failed net6501 and plunked it on my ‘backup’ net5501
via an external eSATA enclosure and up the net5501 came - config was a bit
upset about the change in interface - em0 - vr0 and disks da0-ad0 but
otherwise perfectly functional. Phew.

With internet access restored courtesy of the net5501 I looked for net6501
error and found a thread on this list that recommended ‘+++’ on the serial
port to get to control mode or somesuch. No output at the any of bauds, with
complete power off in between each test.

The cpu was warm but not hot, normal really, and the board was drawing about
0.3 amps at 15v, but it was clear that the network ports were not powering on.
First I tried a ge loopback plug I’d made a while back in each port - none
fired up. Then I tried cabling each port in turn to a gigE switch and neither
side (the switch nor the board ports) lit up.

So now what? Well. I started ramping down the voltage, and the current
increased as expected. But then something magical happened at 5v, 3 of the
network leds (the three that had been in use prior to the failure) lit up.
Still nothing from the link leds though and still no console at any of the
bauds, nay any effect of ‘+++’.

And so that's where I’m at. Kind of out of ideas, and not sure of how much
more I can diagnose with this little fellow.

I suspect that something in the BIOS power-on sequence has failed. The strange
thing (and what gives me a bit of hope) is that the board was running perfectly
until had decided on the reboot.

Perhaps the BIOS has become corrupted?

Does anyone know if that’s possible and if so if there’s any way to fix it -
maybe a cheap and cheerful JTAG jig?

Any and all suggestions welcome :)

Cheers,

—Andrew
