I am currently using the 5501 as a firewall, with a separate dual-ADSL router, and it's perfectly fine. And it's responsive if I VPN back home from work. My lines only run to a few MBits/sec, so I'm nowhere near loading my 5501. Just one caveat... In the past, I used the 5501 to terminate an ADSL PPP session (using a Draytek Vigor 120 ADSL modem), and the NET5501 CPU usage was a bit higher. The ADSL PPP session would fail and restart under one particular type of extreme load: running security audit software to perform intense port-scans against many targets simultaneously, resulting in a very high number of very small packets-per-second. I never established whether that PPP issue was due to limited CPU power, or whether the PPP over ADSL protocol somehow couldn't cope when faced with a ridiculous number of tiny little packets. It just seemed safer to VPN out to a data centre and run my security audits from there. ___ Soekris-tech mailing list Soekris-tech@lists.soekris.com http://lists.soekris.com/mailman/listinfo/soekris-tech

Yes, but how much throughput you can get depends on packet sizes, OS and configuration. While you can get close to 100mb/s with bulk transfers, fire a bunch of small packets through and it will be much more restricted. ___ Soekris-tech mailing list Soekris-tech@lists.soekris.com http://lists.soekris.com/mailman/listinfo/soekris-tech
Re: [Soekris] Speed Throughput
Our 4501 got saturated and ceased to function the day a colleague decided to buy and download Season 5 of Lost in HD from iTunes. 35MB/s was about its limit. We now have a 5501 and our 50MB pipe tops out before the Soekris does. David ___ Soekris-tech mailing list Soekris-tech@lists.soekris.com http://lists.soekris.com/mailman/listinfo/soekris-tech
Re: [Soekris] speed throughput
Hi All, I ran some further tests on the 5501, and after cutting down a lot items I can get 90Mb through it which is pretty impressive. I need to find out what was hampering earlier tests... I'm able to push 100 Mbit through my Net5501. It should do more with interface polling enabled. [Soekris] speed throughput
Hi All, I am looking to get a feeling for the capability of the soekris equipment. I have been using the net 4501 for a number of years and just started looking at the 5501. As Internet speeds are increasing so has the requirements on these devices. So what experiences do you have of getting high speed through put and on what OS/device etc. We have only taken the net 5501 up to around 20MB, throughput - will you get more through it?
