Think I got something...thanks for that spark I needed...plugged some
randomize range into a start time for modulate value...plugged that into
external value of modify...works well.  Thanks again!

Yes but how do I get it to animate and bounce...so particles are going
white to black to white to black...gradually over time.  I'm probably
missing something simple.

Could you use Modify Particle Color?

I didn't do it in the screenshot, but I could have randomized the end 
value (with Randomize Value by Range).
Or I could of used an external value to drive the color, and randomized 
that...
