Redshift has it, Vray has it and since Arnold is not 3rd party no more...

Re: RealLens 2

2017-02-16 Thread Ivan Vasiljevic
Hi,

This post is more then 2 years old :) but I have a question.
When transferring camera from XSI with alembic film aperture gets written
from xsi camera parameter and not Real Lens 2 parameters. That becomes
important for renderer like Octane.
Any chance of Real Lens 2 working along with XSI's aperture parameters?

Cheers.

Hi folks,

Last year as well as on the start of this one we have been mostly busy with
creating sneakers for Adidas projects for Woodblock Berlin.
As there's a lot of questions around for projects still done in XSI I
thought I should post it here.
Spot after spot we ended up doing around ~30 sneaker asset so far, and
counting... :)

Our portfolio page turn out to look like an adidas page now:

Moving and approving from one project to another we managed to amp some
details as we always strive to, so here's a small image describing our love

Re: Continued use of Softimage question

2015-08-19 Thread Ivan Vasiljevic
I agree with Andy and Francois here.
Main reason Soft is crashing is combination with Arnold, Redshift look
development is just great compared to Arnold.
Yes going to main take to change parameter, crazy... But I got used to stay
in main take and just change rendering take from drop down box. Not perfect
I know but not so bad I'd say...
And Houdini nodes, just great, copy paste from scene to scene, just change
paths for vdb's and alembic, not Soft still but far ahead of Maya(waiting
for their new passes system, I see lot's of copy paste from Soft, or it's
CUT paste now :/)

Cheers.

 Hi Andy.

Did you move to Mantra, or stayed with Arnold?

Softimage crashing too often in lookdev is the #1 reason why I'm actively
 looking elsewhere.

On 19-Aug-15 10:35, Andy Goehler wrote:

We at Fiftyeight moved on from Softimage to Houdini for scene assembly
and rendering. While Houdini’s offerings may not be the designed/perfect
pass system currently, we’ve managed to adjust to a level of comfort.
Shading and lighting productivity has gone way up. Houdini has proven to be
very stable during shading and lighting, contrary to my frustration with
 Soft crashing unacceptably often.

We were not looking for the best solution currently available either, we
were looking for a platform to build upon. And are very happy with Side
Effects as a software vendor. Licensing, Bugs reports and fixes, feature
requests and implementation and daily builds make us a satisfied customer.

Re: Alembic Crate workflow - what do you guys do?

2015-04-22 Thread Ivan Vasiljevic
Hi Morten,

Here at DAT http://digitalassettailors.com we are exporting Maya geometry
via alembic to XSI for shading purposes(yes plenty geo big files = slow)
later on we export ASS archives for non-deformed parts from XSI shading
scene, logically split, front left wheel, rear left wheel, car body etc.
Then we plug it on standin objects in rendering scene where we transfer
animation via animation curves or via alembic...
I guess best way would be to export transformed nulls from Maya to Soft via
alembic for all those parts and attach standins to dummy objects under
those nulls?
Then you just overwrite your alembics per shot and your ass files when
shading updated.

Hope this makes sense.

Cheers.

How much rig are you keeping in XSI for your render model?

Personally I would prefer to only export the meshes from maya, without
hierarchy (and have none in xsi).

Doing that with crate doesn't *only* export deforming point caches, it
will export kinematics if the object is being animated in a hierarchy

I did a simple test like that

  *- Null* (animated)
  *  - Null* (animated)
*- Geo* -- export without hierarchy as point cache only

 XSI:
  *Model*
  * - Geo*

Select the *Model* import alembic with these settings

That should attach the cache to any objects in the selected model (import
root selection) that match the object names in the .abc file

strip namespaces (likely you need to)
add the time control to the model rather than scene root (optional)

And that attached cache to the kinematics so the object is rotating not
 just deforming.

I hope that's helpful! Sorry if it's too simplistic!

I have a complex vehicle which is animated in Maya and needs to be
exported to Softimage for shading and rendering. I am using Crate for
export and import, having a shaded Master model in Softimage and attaching
animation only to the existing geometry. There are some snags though, and
the Crate documenTation is kind of slim on this, so I thought I would ask
 the Alembic savvy people here.

The model is rigged so rigid geometry is constrained to a hierarchial
rig which is then animated. Hierarchial meaning for instance a crane arm
with several hinged parts. There are deformed tubes which are part of the
crane arm, so eventually I need pointcache as well as SRT exported.

When I use the built in Maya alembic exporter I get almost all of the
animation, but it seems certain constraints are nok baked and exported,
plus a few parts jump to wrong positions where identically named parts
(with individual numbering) are positioned. Using Crate I can export the
geometry with animation and import the whole thing fine, but when I try
attaching the same file animation to existing geometry (the shaded master
model) I only get the top hierarchy controllers SRT. The naming is
identical and I strip Maya namespaces, so that should not be a factor.

How do you guys manage a Crate workflow similar to this and are there
any particular pitfalls, or do's and don'ts? Specifically I fail to find
the various export options comprehensively documented, so it is a bit
unclear how to be sure to export pointcache for deformed objects and SRT
 for rigid ones.

Any insight in this wil be much appreciated - thanks!

Cheers

Softimage scene explorer is one of main workhorses and not without reason

If you cache, (strandsize, strand position, strand colour) then apply
the cache before the cage, getting rid of the fuzz compound entirely as you
won't need it once styling is done, Then it will won't flicker and should
 be generally faster too.

Hi Paul, perhaps making a note of that in 'set up instructions.txt' ?

By the way the next best 'fuzz' rendering I could find (anywhere, ever)
 was actual pictures. :)

Re: A confession

2014-03-19 Thread Ivan Vasiljevic
You should go with something more simpler for start:

Try opening few outliners as you would often have few explorer opened in SI.
Since hypershade is passe try opening fancy node editor and try to branch
material based on your object selection, something default branched in
render tree.

I know there is more Maya-SI users let's have more of these here... I have
plenty more on my mind...

You have to open the hypershade, and graph the sphere.

Then you will get a awfully large network that is not humanely readable.

So you will open the Node Editor, graph the sphere, and get a nicer graph
in a interface that doesn't allow to do everything you need to do, but you
will learn what to open in what case with time.

Here you will see that the polySphere operator is still there.
Click on it, and edit the subdivision.

Why isn't that available after nCloth is applied? Nobody knows, you don't
ask these questions when using maya. Or you go crazy very fast.

It's not the programming DCC because it's flexible, it's the
programming DCC because you have will have your shelves full of mel
scripts to do simple things very rapidly :)

 Folks

Here is a confession. I've never used Maya! Not really. I've had a
little poke every now and again but no more than make a sphere and spin
 round it.

Now, the lack of Maya knowledge may diminish the value of my comments in
some eyes but I think that , on the contrary, it puts me in quite a good
position to appraise the software at a certain level. Here is an example of
the trouble I'm having that may bring a smile to people's faces. But first
just a couple of more sentences before I reveal my difficulty. I like to
bill myself as the sensitive artist/animator who is technically all fingers
and thumbs, like the woman by the side of her broken down car waiting on a
big strong man to help her out. The truth is that its not true. I do have a
degree in Fine Art but I also studied maths and physics at university and
programmed extensively in Lisp in my first job. So I'm not stupid BUT:

*I'm on my third night trying to adjust the resolution of a sphere after
I have applied n-cloth to it!*

Isn't that incredible? Its one example plucked from many experienced by
people I work with who can and have used Maya. Its symptomatic of the all
encompassing interface workflow issues that Maya has that I think are
really fundamental problems and more important in some ways than headline
large features. Admittedly I had had a couple of glasses of wine by that
point and it was a casual , before bedtime attempt to try something out but
I had already twice asked my colleague at work to explain what the
procedure was and I followed what he was doing at the time.

So there you have it. Is it me.?

Maya user group would be good. The question is:

Are there Maya users here with direct experience of Softimage or who work
alongside Softimage users in a larger facility who have opinions about what
 Softimage functionality they envy

The top 5 favourite features from our lovely Softimage list goes something
 like:

 1) Clean elegant efficient user interface and logical workflow: enabling
us to get things done quicker and with less pain. This so important and a
really fundamental part of the fabric of the software.
 2) ICE: its seamless powerful and all pervading presence; everything can
connect to and control everything else
 3) Render pass and partition system. It is absolutely robust and does all
 you expect. Indespensible.
 4) Live operator stack and construction history. Its all alive all of the
time enabling highly complex layering of effects and processes
 5) Animation, modelling and rigging toolsets. They are peerless.
