Re: Friday Flashback #274
Unless you have rented licenses, your SI3D license should be permanent and not require any clock adjustments. Mine copy of SI3D still functions, but there is a limit to how recent you can go with hardware and OS. For example, SI3D will run on Windows 10, but FlexLM licensing won't function on anything newer than Windows XP. Not sure if Autodesk would accommodate granting a newer licensing software to allow operation on modern hardware and OS. If the machine runs, you should be able to install and use the software. Just don't get too down when you remember all the bugs and workarounds you have to deal with ;-) Matt Date: Sat, 13 Aug 2016 18:03:09 -0700 From: Anthor <ant...@mesmer.com> Subject: Re: Friday Flashback #274 To: softimage@listproc.autodesk.com That video fired me up - I'm going to try to get si3d running again. When Daniel Langlois ran the company, the customer facing element was very design and artist centric. It spoke to the end user. Daniel was selling inspiration, a vision. When Microsoft entered the picture, they threw money at it to make it more visible and accessible with the peak being around the time of the photo you reference. When Daniel Langlois left the company and Microsoft later sold it to Avid, there was a noticeable shift in personality transitioning to more of an engineering focus with attention to user friendliness and corporate like global branding. The company didn't speak through it's leader's vision anymore, but instead through the face of it's products which didn't have a central voice. Sumatra was still being sold on inspiration, but Daniel wasn't around anymore to push the message. In some ways, Daniel Langlois' Softimage was just like Steve Jobs' Apple. When you bought from Apple, you were buying Steve Jobs' visions and being inspired by him, and that momentum carried you to the purchase. Today Apple still exists and sells really well, but it speaks through it's products and it's products don't have that same inspirational connection they had when Steve Jobs was around to push them. It looks like a lot, but in physical space it fits into 2 shoe boxes. Anything tangible that had digital representation was tossed years ago. I'm sure if I search my hard drive I'll find some documents I scanned before discarding into the trash such as copies of "Words from the Wizard" newsletters. I used to have a lot more, but gave stuff away to my students as prizes for good work and so on. One student got the XSI shoe horn, another the XSI 6-CD carrying case, keychain, Softimage|DS shoulder bag, XSI christmas ornament, etc.. The only things I still have that weren't photographed are the T-shirts and business card holderand a few items I just remembered as I write this sentence: XSI Illuminated, XSI 4 by Michael Isner, (some) XSI Learn series DVDs, and an old parallel port dongle dating back to the early 1990's.
