I did do other things than the fx tree. I was the
user interface senior, then team leader,  and later the
development manager of the product.  I'll probably retire
someday and make an open-source compositor/painter nobody will
use, just for the satisfaction to complete that chapter of my
lif. Because it does feel unfinished and that's annoying.

Hey Luc-Eric,

if you are looking for a puzzle worth tinkering with during eventual
retirement, you might want
to look into the implementation of a consistent workflow for Color
Management using
OpenColorIO, ACES profiles and the likes across multiple applications
and levels of user proficiency.

The above is easily enough just as challenging as the early 2000s dark
times of using mental ray
with just a limited documentation and a cryptic "gamma" slider
defaulting to a 0-1 range to start with...

I´m exaggerating a bit but only to not spoil your joys in finding all
those caveats yourself!

--

That said, DaVinci Resolve is suprisingly easy enough to get into and
play with, do simple comps,
add glow, colorgrade a shot and render to a youtube/vimeo preset of
personal choice.

Loading a typical rendered *.exr sequence and seeing it mapped to the
expected colorspace can take a moment
of fiddling but eventually works. Even consolidating footage dragged in
from the user´s desktop and all over the place
into a user specified folder structure using "Media Managment" is
already there.

The world has come a long way in supporting artsy types...

--

Thanks to you and the whole Softimage/XSI team for giving me a few years
of joy working in 3D, especially using easy peasy custom pivot orientations.

Cheers,

tim

I tried it right now with version 2015 SP2 on Win10 and it is

Out of curiosity, was there any incompatibility with the windows

2020-06-08 Thread Pierre Schiller
Luc-Eric, Natron desperatedly needs some help. It's an open source
compositor with a very active user base in Facebook. :)

Senior of User Interface design? Fantastic! Even after 20 years, I keep
opening Softimage elegantly and being "up to date" because of UI.
Yesterday, I was fiddling around with the graphic profiler (the UI where it
shows the scene and graphic time loads).

The shader wizard, the plugin manager, the file search/replace...

All of that, a standard now, but back then: breaking milestones.

#LongLiveSoftimage

Best regards.

2020-06-07 Thread Graham D. Clark
LOL
I normally hate rants, but that was funny.
Agreed, F Autodesk and everyone that shut down XSI. XSI made work, a big
part of my life, enjoyable.
The only reason I’d use Maya is because Jonas has something like ICE going
inside of it.
I went back to Houdini long ago.
Luc-Eric, thank you for FXtree that was an awesome and under appreciated
part of XSI I used frequently.

 MONTREAL--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 30, 2000
Softimage Co., a subsidiary of Avid Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: AVID),
today announced the first shipment of its groundbreaking 3-D animation

in the broadcast, feature films and games industries to take advantage
of a first-of-its-kind, truly non-linear animation system. Within the
first few weeks of availability, Softimage anticipates delivering the
new software to over 17,000 users worldwide.

"SOFTIMAGE|XSI represents a tremendous amount of hard work, talent and
energy from Softimage and we are extremely proud of it," said Marc
Petit, vice president of 3-D products for Softimage. "This project has
