OK , in that case it seems I have misunderstood the concept to the Spacwalk
proxy .

What i understood is that the proxy function in the same way as a regular
proxy , storing errata and packages for the use of the clients , and then if
required they access the proxy instead of all clients establishing a connection
to the outside source. (similar to the way one can run a proxy in front of a
webserver on a single machine ) ,So the server is functioning as both the
checker and the storage container .

Is spacewalk proxy acting in another way ?

why must it be a separate machine ? , Storage ? Bandwidth ? what is the
restriction /application that requires the proxy and the server to be on two
autonomous boxes ?

 Spacewalk Server is already installed?

That is not possible; it doesn't even make a sense.

Re: [Spacewalk-list] registering on the same host

2011-04-19 Thread Assaf Flatto
I managed to solve the issue .

For some reason the /etc/rhn/rhn.conf file is starting with 600 permissions and
hence the httpd process can not access and read the file .

once chmod 644 to the file is done , the registration works.

when i try to use the satellite sync it fails to connect ?

where can i configure it to connect to the rhn network , and sync ?

Also is this a proper way to use spacewalk ?

I need a server to be the main configuration managment server fo all the rh

My understanding from speaking to redhat folks is that spacewalk is for

As far as I understand it , when setting a Spacewalk server as a proxy

But if the server is RH6 and some of my clients are RH5 , how can i

that proxy is querying or is done in the background and he is using

still have some points that are not clear to me , so I was wondering if anyone
can provide me with better clarification :
As far as I understand it , when setting a Spacewalk server as a proxy iit will
cache the rpm's and errata's and the clients will you LAN to retrieve the
updates ,that the server acquired via it's subscription to channels on the RHN
network .

But if the server is RH6 and some of my clients are RH5 , how can i associate
the channels for those to the server ?

Also , where do I need to define when setting the proxy the server that that
proxy is querying or is done in the background and he is using it's already
defined RHN channels ?

Thanks

[Spacewalk-list] triggering scripts on a client machine

2011-04-14 Thread Assaf Flatto

Hash: SHA256

Hello

First let me say thanks for all the help in setting up my spacewalk server and
client , I am now able to deploy software and scripts to the target server.

What I'd like to ask is how can I make spacewalk deploy a file (bash
script ) and trigger it to execute ? is that at all possible ?

Also is there a way to do a bulk upload of files to spacewalk ? I have about
60+ scripts that I need to upload so a bulk upload will be very handy.

Thank you

what I want to do is upload the files once ( the 60+ files ) ,but be able to
schedule a remote command to run on a weekly/monthly basis .

i guess the second part can be done via a cron entry .

Yes. The easiest way is simply to schedule a remote command to run on
the server. I'm on Satellite, but I assume Spacewalk is quite
similar...there is a Remote Command link for a system or a system set,
and in there you can put script commands to run on the remote machine.
You can schedule them to run as soon as possible, which means the next
time the system checks in, or no sooner than a specific time.

If you'd like to copy a script to the client and then execute it, that's
a bit more tricky. Essentially you'd have to upload it via a config
channel, then run (via Remote Command) something like at to get it to
go. Or, I suppose you could upload the script to one of the cron
folders, where it'd get picked up. But I prefer the first method, of
 using Remote Command.

Also is there a way to do a bulk upload of files to spacewalk ? I have

Yep, and fairly straightforward. Use the Spacewalk APIs, which you can
script with Perl, Python, Java, et al. If you're familiar with Python,
I have a couple of scripts that do this already for my Satellite
installation. The API isn't that tough to get started with.

But, if you're wanting to upload the scripts and then execute them
remotely, that's a bit more involved.

I've upgraded to the 1.4RC and still getting the same issue after restarting
the server

btw - i found that the tomcat is pending till the httpd service is starting ,
but the httpd is starting AFTER the tomcat in the spacewalk-service initiation
file , is this a bug or by design ?

I've upgraded to the 1.4RC and still getting the same issue after restarting
 the server
The repo hasn't been regenerated yet, it will be in about an hour.
Ok , i will wait and try another update then.

btw - i found that the tomcat is pending till the httpd service is starting
, but the httpd is starting AFTER the tomcat in the spacewalk-service
initiation file , is this a bug or by design ?

What makes you think that tomcat is waiting for httpd?

Well , on my machine it is waiting for a long time ( some time even 20
minutes ) until i manually start httpd , and then the tomcat kick up and
works ,
I've seen it in ALL of my spoacewalk start and restart i have done.

This issue was in Spacewalk nightly and it's been fixed on March 25,
so it should not appear in 1.4 RC. Does it happen in 1.4 RC for you?

[Spacewalk-list] unable to test deployment to client server

2011-04-12 Thread Assaf Flatto
Hello All

I am trying to learn how to deploy configuration file to a client server .
but when ever i try to deploy i am getting the following error :

Missing Capabilities

An operation could not be completed on a system due to a missing capability.

The server FOO does not have the configfiles.deploy client capability. Please
enable the capability before proceeding with the operation.

and then i get the email below ?

i tried touch /etc/sysconfig/rhn/allowed-actions/configfiles/all
and installed the rhncfg utility to try to use the rhn-actions-control , but
that command is not available on my client server
hence am unable to get deploy to work .

Any ideas ?

Thanks

[Spacewalk-list] file deployment not processed

2011-04-12 Thread Assaf Flatto
Hello

I've tried to test the deployment of files after uploading several sample
maintenance files to the server and assigned them to the target client.

Action Type: Deploy
config files to system Scheduler: assaf
Earliest execution: 4/12/11 12:45:24 PM GMT
Notes: Revision 1 of /weekly/phase.1/diskspace from Phase1

now i am waiting for the system to process the request but for the last 2
hours it has not done anything .

I thought of using the osad tool , but i have postgresql on version 1.3 and
hence it does not work , and i need to verify that i can use the system as
needed ,

how can i force the deploy and check it (i down loaded the satellite pdfs from
redhat but found no way to resolve my issue , and also not in the wiki)

Thanks

sorry for too many emails - this is my first run with spacewalk .

Assaf

 Hello

I've tried to test the deployment of files after uploading several sample
maintenance files to the server and assigned them to the target client.

 Action Type: Deploy
config files to system Scheduler: assaf
Earliest execution: 4/12/11 12:45:24 PM GMT
 Notes: Revision 1 of /weekly/phase.1/diskspace from Phase1

now i am waiting for the system to process the request but for the last 2
hours it has not done anything .

I thought of using the osad tool , but i have postgresql on version 1.3 and
hence it does not work , and i need to verify that i can use the system as
 needed ,

how can i force the deploy and check it (i down loaded the satellite pdfs
from redhat but found no way to resolve my issue , and also not in the wiki)

 Thanks

sorry for too many emails - this is my first run with spacewalk .

It worked before , ( well i was able to login and sync repos and attach clients
), and then i unpicked the check box for disconnected , and restarted the
server .

Since then it did not come up .

[Spacewalk-list] Admin login and channels

2011-04-11 Thread Assaf Flatto
Hello

I am new to spacewalk and i apologise if I my questions seem silly in advance
.

I have just finished installing spacewalk on Centos5 machine and set up the
initial account ( the admin account , if i got this right ) .
Now I am trying to create a channel and i get this error ;
Red Hat channels require admin privileges

The channel name is called redhat 6 and so is the label .

am i missing something ?

Thank you

Assaf
