Amsterdam we leap into summer by pondering the notion of “live” in the context of technologised performance art. Has the advent of the laptop, and practices such as “live cinema” (realtime visual editing) and ‘live coding” (on-the-fly sound programming) created new performative paradigms? How do algorithms, the laptop and conventions of more traditional forms of improvisation sit together? An evening of sound, image and live ambience: Artist and film curator Martijn van Boven will take us on a rollercoaster historical ride tracing the roots of live cinema back to avant-garde and abstract film. He is followed by Trace Reddell, Professor of Digital Media Studies, who will pick up where Martijn left, and perform his latest Live Cinema piece Brink of Disaster”. Upgrade Montreal colleague Tobias c. van Veen will muse on the various paradoxes of “live performance” in laptop sound art, while all you ever wanted to know about live coding but were afraid to ask, will be exemplified by Jan-Kees van Kampen’s performanceWhy is it pt.17?. The latter takes the live coding Toplap Manifesto, and reinterprets it by using a tasty collection of algorithms, inspired by Tom Johnson's Self-Similar Melodies. Last but not least, under the enjoyment of a freshly mixed absinthe martini, Tobias DJs us into the night and gets the party started. [spectre] DNvorscher or how domain business changes the internet
For Immediate Release DNvorscher: Peter Luining: Piet Zwart Institute(IMR) 30 may 2006 From the beginning of the world wide web, internet domain-names were often seen as speculation objects that could bring big profits. With the dot.com bubble bursting in 2001 the market in domain-names more or less collapsed and the domain-squatters searched for other ways to generate money from their property. New strategies were used: with pop-ups, spyware, click-throughs, typo-domains, and sites aimed at children, domains were engineered to generate revenue. Fascinated with the changing use of domain-names Peter Luining started to investigate domain trading and decided to map the changing landscape of the internet. Luining established a set of informational diagrams, writings and open source tools with which the visitor can not only have an idea how the activities of domain-squatters change the character of the internet but also use the tools for further development. platform: MS Windows (All versions), Mac OS9/ OSX, Linux (All versions) type: real time social system website: http://www.dnvorscher.org Peter Luining lives and works in Amsterdam. From the mid-nineties he has developed a unique body of work fusing minimalist aesthetics with the interactive vocabularies of the networks and of software. In 2005, he was a Research Fellow at Media Design Research at PZI/WdKA. http://www.ctrlaltdel.org __ SPECTRE list for media culture in Deep Europe Info, archive and help: http://coredump.buug.de/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/spectre
[spectre] Handke
I think this is still an interesting text, just found in on the harddrive. He is essentially right, allthough I didnt follow him politically. The interventions came much to late and an early clear word would have been -- maybe -- enough. Clear words, thats what he is fighting for too, Heine is about language, maybe language is the reason why Handke is hated so much now, maybe he asks an ugly question. / Handke: Was soll ich darauf antworten? /Warum waren Sie in Rambouillet?
