Few more places available for Masters Programme in Creative Games.

Games as Tools for Architects, Urban Planners, Artists, Musicians, ...
When the evangelists and the inventors of the notion of "Serious Games"
added "battlefield simulation" to health, heritage and art issues, we
thought it would be a good moment to replace the term

"serious"

with

"creative".

There is a Masters programme at Salford University in Manchester, which
offers an "MSc in Creative Games".

http://creativetechnology.salford.ac.uk/games/

The philosophy of this programme in Creative Games is expressed through the
following features:

* To integrate the fields of research of Creative Technology, Heritage
Studies, Digital Art, Interactive Media and to create a new discipline based
on the application area of serious content driven games and the
possibilities of game engines for the Cultural and Creative Industries.

* To equip graduates with both the theoretical expertise and the practical
skills to enter, and make an effective contribution to the growing area of
Creative Games.

* Gaining specific skills in a number of areas including creative thinking,
research methods, computer systems, visualization, multi-media,
interactivity, and telematics.

* Developing the ability to think dynamically and creatively.

* Gaining the expertise to focus on a specific avenue of interest, carry out
enquiries and experiment, and produce pioneering projects or realize
innovative working prototypes and solutions.

[spectre] Fwd: artists / researchers in residence, Spain

2006-06-13 Thread Andreas Broeckmann

ADISONANCIAS 2006

Call for Artists to realize joint
research projects in Research labs and R&D units

This is a call for artists to collaborate on joint research projects with
Research Labs and R&D units in Spain (Basque Country)

  Download the application: http://www.disonancias.com
  DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: JULY 5

  Collaboration period:
from September 2006 to February 2007

The call for artists to participate in DISONANCIAS 2006 is now open.

DISONANCIAS (Art and innovation) is the second round of this art and
industry
collaboration project located in the Basque Country, Spain. The project
seeks
to promote the diversification in relation to the process of innovation
inside research labs and R & D units here, based on the potentials of
experience and exchange generated by the relationship with artists.

Ten artists will be chosen to collaborate with research teams in companies
and labs, in order to encourage "deviations and dissonances" from
the regular logical thought and action processes, in the hope of leading
to a
news definition of prototypes for different products or different
approaches
  toward production.

The deadline for applications is 5 July
2006. We encourage artists to apply who normally work on
collective and relational projects and/or on projects related to science
and
  technology.

  The Jury consists of Roger
Malina, astrophysicist at the Laboratory of Spatial
Astronomy of the CNRS at Marseille (France), and executive editor of
Leonardo
publications on Arts and Sciences, Jill Scott, Director of "The
Artistsinlabs" project and professor and vice director of Z-node PHD
Program in Art and Science at the Institute of Cultural Studies in Art,
Media
and design at the Academy of Art and Design in Zurich (Switzerland) and
Santi
Eraso, Director of Arteleku (Public Art Centre) in Donostia - San
Sebastian
  (Spain).

10 companies and research labs participating in the project have defined
the
field / concept / material / technology and / or processes they wish the
  applying artists to investigate:

  1. Researching concepts. Creative concepts proposals which relate to the
strategic interests of companies / research centers, which may experience
  unexpected developments:
  • Safety: multi-sensorial and secure evacuation of buildings at
  DAISALUX - http://www.daisalux.com
  • Safety (2): researching safe working environments which are able to
integrate disabled persons at LEIA - http://www.leia.es
  • Multimedia: researching ways of integration between the different
media (press, web, TV, radio) of the CORREO GROUP -
http://www.elcorreodigital.com

  2. Thinking up new products. This call corresponds to the need to
diversify
product portfolios and it involves devising new products (mainly for the
  street and home furniture):
  • using materials produced by the FORMICA laminate company -
http://www.formica.es
  • using recycled plastic materials GAIKER Technology Centre -
http://www.gaiker.es
  • from the ALFA LAN GROUP's own technologies, normally used in making
  large public sculptures - http://www.alfaarte.com

  3. Reinventing formats. This involves seeking out innovative formats which
depart from conventional designs. Three formats are related to image, and
one
  to food products:
  • the audiovisual documentary format at EITB - http://www.eitb.com
  • multimedia content for Augmented Reality applications at VICOMTECH -
http://www.vicomtech.es
  • audiovisual and interactive contents to be sent to personal mobile
  devices at EUVE - http://www.euve.org
  • packaging and merchandising of food products at KAIKU -
http://www.kaiku.es

The above collaborations should result in the construction of a prototype
or
drawings of ideas, or development of new approaches or processes.

The 10 artists (or group of artists) selected will receive a fee of 5.000
euros each, and a minimum of 1.300 euros for travel, food and
accommodation.
In addition, each artist is entitled to a maximum of 5.000 euros
(depending
on the project) for expenses driving from the development of the research.
The collaborations last 6 months each, alternating virtual and presential
relations according to the project’s needs.

Full information on the companies and research centers participating and
the
rules for participation are available at http://www.disonancias.com

1.Platform for Urban Investigation on May 13 – 26 at Island6 Arts
Center, Shanghai , China

During the residency of artist Allard van Hoorn at Island 6 Arts Center
from May 13 – 26 2006 the Platform for Urban Investigation will research
Shanghai as an environment for reinterpretation of form and movement in
the city. Various activities will be ongoing during these two weeks .The
audience is welcome to visit Island 6 Arts Center and participate and
co-develop this open-door workshop environment. Allard van Hoorn will be
giving workshops, conducting interviews with various cultural

producers and be doing continuous research while working in this space
and the city around it. A calendar with precise schedule of activities
will be posted on http://www.allardvanhoorn.com/projects_PUI.asp.

Re-appropriation of geometric forms

One of the projects that will take place at Island 6 Arts Centre is
'Re-appropriation of geometric forms'. The public is cordially invited to

actively participate in the development of this activity.

Fellow humans like R. Buckminster Fuller have thoroughly proved we are
the first generation that can fully make the whole of the

system of cohabitation on this planet work, that we have more then
sufficient technological standards, non-organic energy resources etc. to
provide a high standard of living for all people on earth. The only
thing that keeps us from doing so is knowledge.

This project uses the re-appropriation of geometric figures as a method
of stimulating an alternative look on the world. By defining the
properties of the line, triangle, square and circle differently and
using these physical forms accordingly is intending to change our
perspectives on the world around us.

The way humans have evolved on our planet is to a certain extend
arbitrary. So is the way we describe the world around us.

Accordingly, formulas and descriptions in physics and mathematics are
developed over many generations, building theory upon theory.

One can imagine that in a slightly distinctly developed world these
descriptions of the world around us would have developed differently,
giving other meanings and functionality.

This project is an exercise in imagining other functions and definitions
of very common forms in our daily lives like a line, triangles, squares
and circles. Together we will investigate how to re-interpret or
re-appropriate these forms in a different manner from their currently
known geometric realities.

Some examples to start with:
Line (2 sides): as a shape to be used to shake one person's hand on the
other side of the line
Triangle (3 sides): as a shape to be used to kiss people in three
different directions
Square (4 sides): as a shape to be used to hug people in four different
directions
Circle (infinite amount of sides): as a shape to be used to study the
horizon in an infinite number of directions

In the gallery we will do an interactive exercise of redefining these
geometrics for ourselves:

1)Come to Island 6 Arts Centre and study other peoples interpretations
and solutions to this challenge

2)Take some tape, make your own form and re-appropriate it, giving your
own meaning and use

3)Take these forms and use them in their new way in your day-to-day
life. Put them in your house, office or even in the street and

use them according to your own definition
