[spectre] Turbulence Spotlight: Tabula Visum: Tabular Vision HTML Cinema by Patrick Lichty
November 17, 2006 Turbulence Spotlight: Tabula Visum: Tabular Vision HTML Cinema by Patrick Lichty http://turbulence.org/spotlight/lichty Both static and dynamic digital images have often been represented as 'translated' images, reinterpreted from an intermediate image file stored on the web. Beginning with these files, Lichty has translated the images and videos to pure HTML code. As such, they represent a very 'direct' method of representation in the browser. In addition, there is a time-based element that occurs when the tables load into the browser. Thus, HTML Cinema has two dimensions; the time of the load, and the time of the serial. Many of these images are excerpts from Lichty's wristcam photography and video works. After conversion to pure code, several of the pages were unmanageable; therefore, they are a hybrid of code and console handicraft by the artist. BIOGRAPHY Patrick Lichty is a technologically-based conceptual artist, writer, independent curator, animator for the activist group The Yes Men, and Executive Editor of Intelligent Agent Magazine. His work spans over 15 years, dealing with media narrative/criticism and information aesthetics, in many different contexts. He works in diverse technological media, including painting, mobile media, printmaking, kinetics, video, VR, generative music, and neon. Venues in which Lichty has been involved with solo and collaborative works include the Whitney Biennial and the International Symposium on the Electronic Arts (ISEA). Lichty is a faculty member in the Interactive Arts and Media Department at Columbia College Chicago. Maureen Turim, Bill Viola. TITLE TK TITLE TK by Thierry Kuntzel, is the third volume of the anarchive series, both a new work and a database covering all of the artist's works. First known for his work as a film theorist, Thierry Kuntzel is one of the most important artists in France today. He produced most of his videotapes between 1979 and 1980, and since has created installations with projected images, light and sound. The book (648 pages) includes the transcription of about 600 of his working notes, more than a half of them translated into English. The DVD-ROM also presents these manuscripts, and some of these are read by Kuntzel. Through video excerpts of the works that are revealed interactively to the reader, three main paths are possible: body, representation and time. The variations of light and changes of speed, the multiplicity of points of view and the place of the spectator, the apparition and disappearance of traces, highlight the processes of memory and of perception, the fragility of all image, the futility of any attempt to hold on to an image. In addition, the description of nearly forty works, several theoretical texts by Kuntzel, here collected for the first time. A selection of texts referring to his works also can be accessed in the database. __ SPECTRE list for media culture in Deep Europe Info, archive and help: http://coredump.buug.de/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/spectre

[spectre] Thieves of the Invisible - Amazon Noir
Thieves of the Invisible www.amazon-noir.com by Alessandro Ludovico vs. Paolo Cirio feat. UBERMORGEN.COM We have stolen the invisible. Amazon, the motherly bookseller, always sensitive to her customer needs like an affectionate friend, was outraged in her own intimate affects. Her most precious resource, an infinitely beautiful body of culture, able to mesmerize your eyes for hours, was somehow deprived and exposed, after we had eluded her copyright protection. Amazon had been a witty advisor to millions of happy customers, and had spent the last decade researching how to improve her service. She had dedicated all her time and energy to building the best collection of purchasable culture possible. She never wasted her time investing in public mass advertising or in spamming the profiled potential new customer. All she counted on and needed to count on was the grand word of mouth that happy customers passed on one another. That was a killer application – together with the software platform that made books the center of an interrelated universe. She started then to hyper-contextualize every piece of her inventory, researching the overlaps of tastes her happy customers kind of anonymously displayed. Furthermore, she incited customers to compile lists, review, comment, discuss and tag all books. But all her love was finally expressed in allowing users to peek into the inner side of her treasures: the original texts. She worked hard from the beginning and even if many were skeptical at first, she succeeded in realizing a new model: 'the imagined book', more real than the one you would look at in a physical bookstore. Now the customers got more motivated than ever, seeing their objects of desire not only described by their own technical details, but also by their many external references. At this very moment, Amazon placed a gamble with the future. She did something no other bookseller had ever done before: She disembodied a substantial part of her books, thus filling a huge database (the literary correspondent of the music 'celestial jukebox'). By doing so, customers were able to text-search whole books ('Search Inside the Book' option, they called it) and then see the search results displayed within the respective paragraphs of the book searched. This provoked a global joy and ecstatic use, but exposed the nudity of the book to too many eyes. We, the Amazon Noir gang, were simply astounded and started to endlessly play with this umpteenth content toy. So, we couldn't stop until we stole the invisible. We couldn't resist her beauty. She was a beautiful rich body of culture, continuously unveiling her generous and attractive forms at request, but never saying: Yes, you can take me away. This free cultural peep show started to drive us crazy. Many others were in the same condition, but reacted differently: crashed their computers and were never again online, or found another pay-per-view drug. Some of them described it like being constantly titillated, regularly being asked for money in order to possess one of the too many physical bits. In fact adopted software doesn't give access to the whole content, but only to bits of it. Nevertheless, it is clear and understood to anybody that the whole content was 'there', behind a few mysterious clicks away. A cornucopia of texts, an astonishing amount of knowledge, a compelling body of culture, infinitely put on hold, for marketing reasons. So this virtual interface was a never- ending blinking to the disclosed magnificent beauty sold one bit a time. Then we definitively stole the invisible. We hacked the system, we built a malicious mechanism (Amazon Noir) able to stress the server software, getting back the entire books we wanted, at request. It was a question of creating a so-called 'foolingware'. We actually think that in the future we will be remembered as the predecessor of 'foolingware', and now we feel guilty about that. So we started to collect piece by piece the yearned body of culture with increasing excitement and without a pause. We wondered. What is the difference between digitally scanning the text of a book of yours, and obtaining it from Amazon Noir? There is no difference. It would be only discussed in terms of the amount of wasted time. We wanted to build our local Amazon, definitively avoiding the confusion of continuous purchasing stimuli. So we stole the loosing and amusing relation between thoughts. We stole the digital implementation of synapses connections between memory, built by an online giant to amuse and seduce, pushing the user to compulsively consume. We were thieves of memory (in a McLuhan sense), for the right to remember, to independently and freely construct our own physical memory. We thought we did not want to play forever under the peep- show unfavorable rules. But we failed. We failed and

Breathing hence strongly suggests an association to life. But breathers' body, a coat of white plastic foil without any distinct limbs, lacks all other commonness with animals that would support this association. simply breathing, they cause no emotions like pity or fear, neither do they pretend to be intelligent. (what other robots do sometimes) They look (and sound) less technical than walking or driving robots. breathers are inspired by lungs. being as minimalist as possible, nine basic electronic parts, two fan motors and white plastic foil form an artificial lung. The technical parts are almost invisible from outside, only from below the breather the fan exhaust is seen. Although breathers' behavior is easily predictable, it is not obvious how they technically function. http://www.derstrudel.org/~snoth/breathers.avi #...//?/ Ian Gyselinck and James Vervenne - Lady Rollercoaster [exhibition] [B] A giant rollercoaster in a female shape. About 4 inches between the frontpanels of the computers. And a rope attached between the two cdrom trays. When one cdrom-drive 'ejects', it pushes the other cdrom tray, so that one starts closing. When one cdrom-drive attempts to close, the rope blocks it from fully closing. Its self-preservation instinct make the cdrom-drive to eject its tray again. The cycle is complete and self-supporting. The self-preservation instinct of both computers turns them into slavery. Only one will survive on the long term: the fittest. The only thing missing to enable darwinistic natural selection is reproduction. Some part of the audience associates the repetitive in-out movement with sex, but I leave those dirty associations to the audience. So this installation reveals several nature-like behavioural aspects of common hardware: self-preservation, slavery, suicide. #...//?/ Johannes Taelman - I robot? We have ever more opportunities to have our say and be heard, or to project a sense of who we are, primarily as a result of a variety of social software and networking services. We use Blogs, Wikis, Instant Messagers, and a variety of tools such as MySpace, Flickr, Bebo, and YouTube to represent our electrical selves, and to mediate who we are and what we say. In our Web 2.0 world, the internet is no longer about information silos and corporate sales, but about sharing, communication and participation. Art Scene Warehouse's big space is bringing together the works of 16 of China's best photography artists. Some of the photographers, who come from throughout China, are among China's most famous and internationally exhibited, while others are young, emerging photography artists. The show is being co-curated by Gu Zheng, one of China's most respected photography curators. Gu curated the Guangzhou Photography Triennial in 2005, one of China's most important photography shows, as well as an exhibition that toured 4 USA museums in 2005 and 2006. The title HARVEST refers to the culmination of the 16 Chinese photographers' hard work, being reaped and sewn at Art Scene Warehouse for viewers to enjoy. HARVEST also refers to the current autumn season, when the fruits of labour are reaped in the fields, as the fruits of the artists' work will be gathered together for a big exposition at Art Scene Warehouse's exposition. more information http://www.artscenechina.com 3. FOREPLAY -- Yang Zhenzhong Solo-Exhibition Solo Exhibition: YANG Zhenzhong Shanghart H-Space, Shanghai Date: nov. 05, 2006 - nov. 30, 2006 The desire to challenge normative notions and fixed formats of social behavior informs the practices of Yang Zhenzhong's work. He is pre-occupied with a tendency to invert the order of things and often touches upon cultural conventions and out-dated social norms. He uses his diverse aesthetic language to describe what it is that makes up a community, with its functions, its exchanges, its rules and its behaviors. Yang Zhenzhong's playful videos, installations and photographs are more than visual reflections; they are intelligent comments on the design of contemporary society. With a sincere attitude, but in a playful manner, the artist explores the contemporary preoccupation with questions of identity and perception, and the ability of images to turn apathy into anticipation, and ordinariness into desirability. He uses part fiction and part reality that tangles both the euphoric enthusiasm and deep anxiety of day-to-day experience. His work has lately been described as an extraordinary distillation of an artistic practice that couldn't be more preoccupied with the nature of what is real. Born in Xiaoshan in 1968, Yang Zhenzhong now lives and works in Shanghai. Yang Zhenzhong's work has showed at major international exhibitions, biennales and triennials. Recent exhibitions include China Contemporary – Art, Architecture and Visual Culture, Museum Boiman van Beuningen, Rotterdam, The Netherlands (2006), Yang Zhenzhong Solo-Exhibition, IKON Gallery, Birmingham, UK (2006), and China Power Station – Part I, Battersea Power Station – The Serpentine Gallery, London, UK (2006). more information http://www.shanghart.com 4.SHiNE Art Space - Cai Zhisong - Motherland Date: nov. 15, 2006 - Dec. 15, 2006 The 'Motherland' series consists of three parts: the 'Ode' and 'Custom' works, which are figurative, and the 'Refinement' object pieces. In his figurative works Cai creates warriors which take influence from the Qin dynasty (221-206 BC), the era in which the infamous Xian terracotta warriors were created. In his interpretations of these ancient soldiers he implies no symbolic significance concerning this time period however. What we see is not a literal representation of a historical figure or one moment in time, but a figure who is representative of the trials and tribulations that have existed throughout history. We live in a time of great social
