[spectre] 90 Degrees Equatorial Project - JAMES GEURTS

2007-04-27 Thread EAF Director

JAMES GEURTS
90 Degrees Equatorial Project

Opening 6pm Thursday 19 April-19 May
Gallery talk 4pm Friday 20 April
EXPERIMENTAL ART FOUNDATION

90 Degrees Equatorial Project combines three
aspects of Geurts' practice - photography, video
and site-specific installations. The works are
primarily abstract documentation generated by
situated on-site performance. Geurts works with
video by manipulating live feed to force errors
in the recording process. Abstraction of
real-time into video static opens the possibility
of unexpected relationships between visual and
aural elements.

"At four equal sites on the equator, a corner of
a right angle plastic frame pierces the skin of
the landscape to give the illusion of a frame
that passes through the earth. I developed a
portable sculpture in the form of a 90-degree
frame, which was set up at the four sites and
photographed. The frame is made from fabricated
plastic and internally lit with fluorescent
light." James Geurts

The project worked at four locations which are 90° apart :
100° East - Pandang, Sumatra, Indonesia
10° East - Libreville, Gabon, Africa
80° West - Perneldes, Equador, South America
170° East - Kirimatti Atoll, Pacific Ocean

"James Geurts' recent works have included moving
projections that are abstract and powerfully
ambient-an amniotic surround of pulse and
pattern- and works that resemble more closely
filmic narrative vignette-as well as static works
that are akin to traditional painting and
sculpture. They work singly and, assembled,
aggregate effectively as installation." Ken
Bolton

Melbourne-based James Geurts's art practice
includes site-specific works, installation,
video, photography and drawing. James explores
human language and intervention with landscape.
In 2006 James completed Artesian, multi-screen
video installation, funded by the Australian Film
Commission; Tidemark (2) site-specific works at
Canvas International Art Gallery Amsterdam;
Gravitas, public projection video work, Project
3, Adelaide Festival of Arts; SPAN Gallery,
Melbourne; Picnic, video installation at Conical
Gallery, Melbourne; Bastards of Paradise,
Greenaway Art Gallery Adelaide. Other recent
exhibitions include Reception, 2004 Adelaide
Biennial of Australian Art, Art Gallery of South
Australia; Suburban Edge, Australian Centre for
Photography 2004-06; Tidemark, (in collaboration
with Brussel's sound artist Hans de Man, Foton)
Greenaway Art Gallery 2004. Other recent screen
based works include: Limbo, Luminosity public
projection commission, Adelaide and Federation
Square Melbourne 2006; White wash, Art Gallery of
South Australia 2005; Shellfish/man, ACMI
Melbourne and Brisbane 2002 and Art Gallery of
South Australia 2003; Toying with Paradise at
Experimenta, Melbourne and ACCA in 2001. Accord,
screened live with the State Orchestra of
Victoria at the Melbourne Concert Hall 2001.

[spectre] Use Your Imagination-find your new collaborative partner

2007-04-27 Thread Drew Hemment

Come find your new collaborative partner at ...

USE YOUR IMAGINATION
Friday 11 May, 10am-6pm
Manchester
www.futuresonic.com/07/imagination.html

Leading figures from around the world are converging on Manchester
for Use Your Imagination, a unique one-day event presented by
[EMAIL PROTECTED], Lancaster University's new interdisciplinary
research institute, as a part of the Social Technologies Summit and
Futuresonic 2007 Urban Festival of Art, Music and Ideas.

The event sets out to :

- Inspire people with the possibilities of interdisciplinary
collaboration /

- Show artists what engineers get excited about, and vice versa /
- Enable people to meet in structured and informal ways /
- Seed new collaborations.

Delegate Pass £45; Student Delegate Pass £10

ART & SOCIAL TECHNOLOGIES

A man falls in slow motion from a high building. Upon impact the
concrete paving gives way and ripples in concentric waves as it
absorbs the energy of his fall. The key creative at Saatchi & Saatchi
behind the celebrated T Mobile TV adverts, which feature flexible
cityscapes and collapsing walls, will explain how they capture
compelling new ideas. The urban environment is being transformed by
emerging technologies - the ground beneath our feet is no longer
hard, but 'soft', as in 'software'.

He will join other leading figures from around the world converging
on Manchester for Use Your Imagination.

We live in an age when the future of the next few hundred years is
being written. Just as the printing press and the steam engine
changed history, so the decisions made now about the design of the
technologies we use will shape our lives tomorrow. It is not just
scientists who are engineering this future, but artists and DIY
technologists also. And we are now at a moment when these ideas are
breaking out of small labs and art events.

Presentations by leading international figures on case studies of
collaborations between artists and engineers will be followed by a
participatory workshop which aims to introduce you to your next life
partner, creating a space in which new collaborations can be hatched,
or at the least enabling you to leave with some new contacts and
feeling inspired.

Followed by Manchester's first Dorkbot, a show-and-tell event for
people doing strange things with electricity.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Creativity and innovation occurs at the boundaries... the conception,
production, management and use of our 'material world' increasingly
relies on the convergence of science, technology, social science,
arts and humanities. Nanotechnology, intelligent materials, ambient,
mobile, ubiquitous and visualisation technologies provide
opportunities for the convergences of the products we use, the
clothes wear, the places in which we live and work, and the media we
engage with for work and leisure. In order to create this material
world we must have the visualisation and creative skills to access
and combine the technologies, but also an understanding of
sustainability; the social, economic, and environmental factors, as
well as an insight into production, management and historical contexts.

Plan :
To work with leading designers and innovators across the globe to
build an 'Imagination Laboratory', to enable people and organisations
to engage with academia in a dynamic and creative way, using time and
space to research and imagine futures. The laboratory would be part
of a global network of similar places to enable virtual as well as co-
located engagement in research and development.

FUTURESONIC &
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Use Your Imagination itself involves an unusual collaboration. A link
has been established between the Futuresonic festival and
[EMAIL PROTECTED], a major new interdisciplinary research
institute at Lancaster University, with the appointment of Drew
Hemment, Futuresonic's director and founder, as Associate Director of
the new research institute.

A shared aim is to seed new interdisciplinary collaborations, which
is a focus of the Use Your Imagination event, as well as provide
pathways for further research at postgraduate level.

We invite you to be a part of this.

[spectre] Maxwell City workshop - 2 places still available

2007-04-27 Thread Erich Berger

+++

There are still 2 places available for the following workshop:

Maxwell City
an artistic investigation into the
electromagnetic urban environment.

Tuesday 29th of May - Saturday 2nd of June

Where: Atelier Nord Lakkegata 55D N-0817 Oslo
Directors: Erich Berger and Martin Howse
Guests: Armin Medosch, Honor Hager

Participation is free of charge
Send applications with CV and motivation to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Further information: http://anart.no/projects/maxwell-city/

+++

Workshop program:

Pre-workshops-preparation:

Participating artists are welcome to choose from the following
pre-preparation topic suggestions for presentation on day two of the
workshop: and further active elaboration, or to offer ideas for alternative
topics:

1) Selection of a well-defined portion of the electromagnetic
spectrum; for example, low frequency RF, Microwaves, Ultra-violet,
Infra-Red and Gamma-Rays. Acquaintance with properties, for example
consequences of wavelength, power and ownership, and with intervention
and measurement devices.

2) A topic of own choice within the context of the workshops excluding own
work.

*** Day One:

Introductions to Anart, the workshop, key devices, and all
participants

Preparation of theory and practise for todays fieldtrip in the city
including an examination of emissions architecture, transmission,
reception, antenna and artistic context.

First city field trip with the EM sniffers or probes. This
pseudo-scientific field trip will make use of all manner of measuring
and recording equipment

Discussion of field trip experience and ideas

*** Day Two:

Full spectrum part I:
Presentation of pre-workshop prep by participants
within the context of the full EM spectrum; a mapping also of the
spectrum to art, devices, techniques and technologies.

Second field trip outside the city using VLF and all recording
equipment. Grill (weather permitting)

*** Day Three:

An introduction to baudline software to examine the material
recorded during the first and second field trips.
An examination of recorded material within the context of artistic
work with the EM spectrum.

Full spectrum part II:
Presentation of pre-workshop prep by participants
within the context of the full EM spectrum; a mapping also of the
spectrum to art, devices, techniques and technologies.

Investigation of artistic ideas towards experiments, interventions and
projects.

19h Open Lecture with Armin Medosch and Honor Hager

*** Day Four:

Discussion with Armin Medosch and Honor Hager

Third field trip with probes and new equipment. eg. Geiger counter.
First experiments, interventions and project sketches within the city.

*** Day Five:

An overview of the workshop experience and discussion of further artistic
and technical possibilities within the workshop context.

Construction of in-city sketches and projects.

+++

Participating artists do not need to have practical or
theoretical knowledge about the electromagnetic spectrum.
They need to bring a keen interest to work as a group with
unusual artistic material within the urban environment.

Further information about the workshop, the content,
the directors and guests is available at:
