The Malevich Society is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing knowledge about the Russian artist Kazimir Malevich and his work. In the belief that Malevich was a pioneer of modern art, and should be recognized for his key contributions to the history of Modernism, the Society awards grants to encourage research and writing relating to his history and memory. The Malevich Society also sponsors publications devoted to Malevich, as well as translations of his texts, and texts about him, into other languages. The Society welcomes applications from scholars of any nationality, and at all stages of their career. Proposed projects should increase the understanding of Malevich and his work, or augment historical, biographical, or artistic information about Malevich and/or his artistic legacy. Subject: CALIN DAN IS DIRECTING AN EXPERIMENTAL THEATRICAL EVENT CASTING INMATES FROM COLIBASI ROMANIAN PENITENTIARY Odeon Theater (Bucharest, Calea Victoriei 40-42) Monday, May 28, at 7:00 p.m., hosts the performance CA(R)NE – THIS IS OUR CITY an experimental theatrical event by Călin Dan, casting inmates from the Colibasi Penitentiary in Romania. The creative team involves: Călin Dan (text stage direction) Matze (sound design DJ) Cosmin Ardeleanu (set design costumes) Vali Chincisan (computer animation VJ) Suzana Dan (visual campaign special props) Victor Velculescu Marius Iacob (video). Project initiated and supported by: Atelier Rijksbouwmeester, the Hague, realized in the frame of the Prison Star Program, implemented in the Colibasi Penitentiary with the support of the Dutch Ministries of Foreign Affairs and of Justice as well as of the Netherlands Royal Embassy in Bucharest. Project organized by: Hand Milked Visions Foundation, Amsterdam; the International Center for Contemporary Art, Bucharest; Odeon Theater, Bucharest. Project co-finaced by: Swiss Cultural Programme Romania, Pro Helvetia / SDC; the Administration of the National Cultural Fund, the Ministry of Culture Cults, Romania. The play brings forward the stray dogs coming from the demolition sites that defaced Bucharest in the ‘70s ‘80s, in order to make room for the building of Ceausescu’s Palace. While waiting euthanasia, the characters talk about the relation between masters and servants, dictators and masses, about architecture, religion, etc. The text blends continuously the existential debate and the mythological prospective, with abrupt changes of location between a dogs’ prison and the court of a fictional prince. The theatrical performance is backed by an original sound composition performed live as well as by videos and animations mixed in real time.
