Turbulence Commission: WoodEar by Peter Traub
http://turbulence.org/works/woodear

Bringing the body of the tree to the network is a natural fit -- a tree is a
network too: roots sensing and absorbing nutrients, leaves sensing and
photosynthesizing sunlight, and phloem and xylem running throughout to carry
nutrients across the structure. WoodEar attempts to merge the dynamic
qualities of this biological network with the digital network. A series of
sensors attached to the tree stream data on the state of its environment --
light, temperature, air pressure, and wind. This live data is merged with
photos and recordings of the tree's immediate surroundings into a generative
application/installation. By downloading and running the application, anyone
can access the live environmental experiences of the tree -- one that may be
very distant from them, but that still shares the same air, sun, earth, and sky.

WoodEar is a 2012 commission of New Radio and Performing Arts, Inc. for its
Turbulence website. It was made possible with funds from the National Endowment
for the Arts.

BIOGRAPHY

Peter Traub is a composer/installationist/net artist currently living in
Charlottesville, VA. He completed his Ph.D. in 2010 in the Composition and
Computer Technologies program at the University of Virginia. He received his
Master's in Electro-Acoustic Music from Dartmouth College in 1999, and has
composed numerous works of electronic music, net art, and sound installations.
His works have been performed and exhibited internationally and his piece,
ItSpace -- also commissioned by New Radio and Performing Arts, Inc. -- was
featured on National Public Radio's Day to Day in 2008. Between Dartmouth and
UVA, Peter lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for five years where he worked
as a software developer at internet startups. His dissertation, titled Spatial
Exploration: Physical, Abstracted, and Hybrid Spaces as Compositional
Parameters in Sound Art, was a series of performances, installations, and a
large paper exploring the use of technology-mediated spaces in contemporary
music.

Radarstation 2 – Call for tracks

Fantomton is looking for musicians for a sound-project based on samples
taken at the abandoned listening station at Teufelsberg Berlin.

Link to the call:
http://fantomton.de/experimente/radarstation-2-call-for-tracks/

*The Project*

The abandoned listening station on the Teufelsberg Berlin has a magical
atmosphere. The industrial area with its rusty metal surfaces, broken
glass and the unique acoustic in the domes provide a rich repertoire of
fascinating sounds which reflect the area’s ambience.

We could not resist the attraction of the place and visited it in 2009,
equipped with microphones and recording devices. Subsequently the
recordings were given to musicians in order to get different
interpretations of the sound material. The goal was to translate the
impressions of the place into music.

The result is the release Radarstation:
http://fantomton.de/releases/music/ft001-radarstation

Due to great interest and a lot of positive reactions in the recent
time, we once more would like to motivate artists to use our sound
material to produce new exciting tracks.

*How to contribute*

The tracks should mainly consist of our samples and reflect the special
atmosphere of the area, interpreted by the artists. The resulting works
will be presented on our website and will be offered as “Radarstation 2″
compilation for download. There is also the possibility of a CD release.

The participating tracks should not be longer than 10 minutes and we
would like to receive them in flac format. We will release the
compilation under this creative commons license and need your approval [1].

Deadline is the 25. November 2012.

*Recourses*

You can find our samples in the Fantomon Dropbox:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/9fa44oynahx9bak/lQCZ7PSJdj

Click Download - As Zip

As a further inspiration we recommend to go for a walk on Teufelsberg or
take a look at the numerous pictures of the place.

Conversion to flac: http://flac.sourceforge.net/download.html

*Send us your track*

- Goto http://www.dropitto.me/fantomton
- Use password: radarstation
- Select your flac file and press upload

Have fun listening to the samples and producing music.
We are looking forward to hear your compositions and thank you in advance!

On September 20, 2012, Chicago dirty new media artists jonCates

each presented a performance as an intersection with the exhibition
Ex-Static: George Kagan's Radios at Intuit, the Center for Intuitive

new media employed as a tactic in support of art rather than new media
art as a condition represented by infatuation with expensive, new devices.

CRITICAL BOTOX in times of 2.0 feudalism, foloseste o linie narativa
loc la PAVILION in Bucuresti.

Inteleasa ca o practica politica in sine, CRITICAL BOTOX sustine
valoarea politica a contactului uman direct, in aceste vremuri confuze

publicului interesat in explorarea fiecareia dintre ele.

se desfasoara in timpul expozitiiloe.

Conduce
alaturi de expertul in marketing Tania Brett, DIBINA (Digital Büro of
International Art), o platforma curatoriala independenta , de
management cultural si de comunicare relationala. Unul dintre
El
pregateste in mod regulat programe si expozitii independente,
colaboreaza cu diverse media si este lector invitat in diferite centre
de arta si universitati. Brahim a dezvoltat proiecte la: La Casa
Encendida, Madrid; CCCB, Barcelona; Matadero, Madrid; La Capella,

[spectre] // Announcing the CryptoParty Handbook //

2012-10-03 Diskussionsfäden Julian Oliver
Hey list,

//--

We're very pleased to announce the #CryptoParty Handbook (v1).

CryptoParties are a global movement in the interests of educating and empowering
people to protect their basic human right to Privacy in the age of the Internet.

A CryptoParty is an informal gathering where cryptographic, tunneling and
anonymity tools are installed and used on laptops, smartphones and tablet
computers. Network attack vectors and surveillance strategies are performed and
studied such that those at a CryptoParty are presently aware of the risks.

The CryptoParty movement began in Twitter less than 2 months ago in response to
legal reforms proposed in Australia that would implement state-wide surveillance
of all civilian communications in both cellular and Internet domains.

There have since been many CryptoParties world wide with dozens proposed from
Johannesburg to Calgary..

This 392 page, Creative Commons licensed handbook guides those with little
technical knowledge how to protect their privacy in the networked, digital
domain.

The book was written in 3 days using the BookSprint system at Studio Weise7 in
Berlin by a small core group and plenty of help from others.

The book can be downloaded here in a PDF format:

https://cryptoparty.org/wiki/CryptoPartyHandbook

It can be bought in print from Lulu here (at cost price):

http://tinyurl.com/9q97uqq

It will be available for Kindle and iPad in various E-Pub formats within 48
hours of this email. Visit the CryptoParty website above for updates.

Warm regards from Berlin,
