[spectre] CALL FOR PROPOSALS: Rule of Thirds - the first major event of North

2009-07-22 Diskussionsfäden Jennifer Stoddart
As part of the Abandon Normal Devices (AND) festival, WeMakeMedia and
folly are teaming up to deliver North, a programme of events and
activities aimed at inspiring creative professionals to do things
differently.
The first main event, taking place in South Cumbria in October 2009 is
called Rule of Thirds. It will take the form of a one day gathering of
creative thinkers to discuss the impact of digital culture on the
creative workflow, and explore the exciting, developing opportunities
for how we create, communicate and collaborate.

We're inviting proposals from artists and members of the creative
industries to contribute to the event.

We're looking for creative people who want to share inspirational ideas
and insights in the form of a 15 minute presentation. You can be working
in any discipline, but we're looking for speakers who will contribute
presentations relevant to our main theme: exploring how digital culture
and innovation are having an impact on creative workflows

Our intention is to bring together creative people from a range of
disciplines to share, learn and debate. We're really interested in
exploring innovative approaches, creative workflows and new forms of
collaboration.

Deadline for submissions: 1 September 2009

[spectre] Successful applicants for the FLI Residencies 2009 announced

2009-06-15 Diskussionsfäden Jennifer Stoddart
Folly (http://www.folly.co.uk) and Lanternhouse International
(http://www.lanternhouse.org) are delighted to announce the three
successful artists joining them for the FLI Residencies 2009. The
scheme is now in its second developmental year as the result of a keen
and dynamic partnership between the two organisations.

Internationally renowned interactive artist Stanza
(http://www.stanza.co.uk) has just completed a three year Arts and
Humanities Research Fellowship at Goldsmiths Studios. His work
encompasses interactive art, real time networked spaces, installations
and performances, and he will spend the month of July in residence
assessing his work, its impact and relevance.

US-based artist James Coupe (http://jamescoupe.com) will return to the
UK to develop the first phase of Surveillance Suite, a non-linear
generative film installation supported by Creative Capital in New York.
For three months this Summer, he will use face recognition algorithms to
transform our experience of Ulverston via a series of overlapping video
narratives of various styles, genres and subject matter.

Mark Vernon (http://www.meagreresource.com) is a sound artist interested
in collaborative practice, based in Glasgow. He will be visiting at a
number of points across the year, beginning with a two-week stay in July
and will be making work in response to the people, artefacts and places
he comes across during his residency in Cumbria.

Talking about the selected artists, Kathryn Lambert, Creative Director
of folly, said We were thrilled with the overwhelming response from
artists to the FLI residency scheme and are equally delighted with the
line up for this year's programme. We are pleased to be working with
three such talented artists and eager to engage with them in a
meaningful exploration of their work and ideas.

The FLI Residencies offer support to artists working with new
technologies to develop their ideas and extend their practice.
Lanternhouse's Creation Centre Director, Jay Haigh explains The FLI
Residency Programme continues to meet a real need for artists to have
access to the high quality discourse and the enriching creative
environments that Lanternhouse International and folly provide. It is
very inspiring to work with artists this year who are keen to connect
their work more deeply at a local level, through a rich programme of
participatory activity, and for their innovatory practice to stimulate
professional learning across the Northwest. We are particularly
delighted to be announcing the successful artists in the same week as
the 175th birthday of Lanternhouse itself.

[spectre] Two new articles in the Digital Artists Handbook

2009-06-01 Diskussionsfäden Jennifer Stoddart
folly and GOTO10 are pleased to announce the latest articles to be added
to the Digital Artists' Handbook at
http://www.digitalartistshandbook.org

The handbook is a reliable and accessible source of information that
introduces artists to different tools, resources and ways of working
related to digital art. With a focus on Free Software and Open Content,
the handbook covers topics such as working with graphics, sound and
digital video, software art, developing your own hardware, collaborative
working and publishing your work.

The first of two new articles, Video editing with open source tools,
has been written by Valentina Messeri and Eleonora Oreggia.

Valentina Messeri studied Philosophy of Technology and has been living
in Spain since 2002. She is an advanced GNU/Linux user and video-maker,
an expert in video streaming, teaches multimedia and works freelance in
post production and live audio/video streaming.

Eleonora Oreggia is a media artist born in Milan and based in Amsterdam.
She worked as editor and researcher at Netherlands Institute for Media
Art (NIMK) in Amsterdam, and is currently Researcher in Design at Jan
van Eyck Academie in Maastricht and PhD in Cultural Studies at
Goldsmiths, University of London.

The second new article is by UK-based Sumit Sarkar, a visual artist
whose character based artwork takes the form of digital and canvas
paintings, digital sculpture, and aerosol art.

Sumit was invited to write Blender: working in 3d having spent 2008 as
artist in residence with folly and Lanternhouse International. During
his residency he used Blender to create Ananta, a new exhibition
expressing his vision of the Hindu religion and spirituality.

Launched in early 2008, the handbook developed out of ongoing
consultation with artists working with technology, which has shown a
need for removing the barriers for artists to use digital tools. The
project is supported by Arts Council England.

Brought to you by leading digital arts organisation folly, the Digital
Artists' Handbook has been edited by Marloes de Valk and Aymeric Mansoux
of GOTO10, a collective of international artists and programmers.

In 2009 folly and GOTO10 embark on a new partnership to take forward the
development of this unique and valuable resource. The two organisations
are committed to working together to realise an ambitious development
programme which will enhance the handbook, build on its international
networks and maintain its relevance in a rapidly changing sector.

Notes to editors:

About the Digital Artists' Handbook:

The Digital Artists Handbook is an up to date, reliable and accessible
source of information that introduces you to different tools, resources
and ways of working related to digital art.

The goal of the Handbook is to be a signpost, a source of practical
information and content that bridges the gap between new users and the
platforms and resources that are available, but not always very
accessible. Articles are written by invited artists and specialists,
talking about their tools and ways of working. Some articles are
introductions to tools, others are descriptions of methodologies,
concepts and technologies.

When discussing software, the focus of the Handbook is on Free/Libre

about the available tools but also about the practicalities related to
Free Software and Open Content, such as collaborative development and
licenses. All this to facilitate exchange between artists, to take away
some of the fears when it comes to open content licenses, sharing code,
and to give a perspective on various ways of working and collaborating.

[spectre] CALL FOR CONTRIBUTOR TO DIGITAL ARTISTS' HANDBOOK

2008-06-23 Diskussionsfäden Jennifer Stoddart
folly, a leading digital arts organisation working in the Northwest of England
and online, is looking to commission an article on Video Editing with Open
Source Tools for the Digital Artists' Handbook.

www.digitalartistshandbook.org

The Digital Artists' Handbook is an up to date, reliable and accessible source
of information that introduces artists to different tools, resources and ways
of working related to digital art.

The goal of the Handbook is to be a signpost for tools, resources, and methods.
A source of practical information and content that bridges the gap between new
users and the platforms and resources that are available, but not always very
accessible. The Handbook will be slowly filled with articles written by invited
artists and specialists, talking about their tools and ways of working.
Articles can take the shape of introductions to tools, as well as descriptions
of methodologies and technologies.

When discussing software, the focus of this Handbook is on Free/Libre Open
Source Software. The Handbook aims to give artists information about the
available tools but also about the practicalities related to Free Software and
Open Content, such as collaborative development and licenses. All this to
facilitate exchange between artists, to take away some of the fears of artists
when it comes to open content licenses, sharing code, and allowing them to have
a look at various ways of working and collaborating. The focus is on practical
consequences, not on political implications.

The Handbook was launched in March 2008. A number of articles were commissioned
for this launch, including introductions to all the main handbook sections. One
area we are seeking to increase the depth of content in is Working with
Digital Video, and we are looking for someone to write an article on the topic
of Video Editing with Open Source Tools. An introduction to Working with
Digital Video has been published at www.digitalartistshandbook.org/node/28. We
would like the article to pick up on the ideas introduced in the final
paragraph of the introduction, using a number of tools in way of examples:

When you start working with free software as a videomaker, it is likely that
you need to invest some time and energy in understanding certain basics of the
video production process. Sometimes this might mean you have to look for
alternative workflows, to dive 'under the hood' of a digital tool, or
reconfigure an existing solution to suit your needs. Investigating the tools
you use as a video maker is an important part of the job, it can help gain
insights, it can be an inspiration to explore new ways of working and
imagemaking. Peter Westenberg, Working with Digital Video, Digital Artists'
Handbook, October 2007

A fee of £185 ex VAT is available to the writer of the Video Editing with Open
Source Tools article.

[spectre] LIVERPOOL TO HOST _OPEN SOURCE CITY MICRO- FESTIVAL

2008-05-12 Diskussionsfäden Jennifer Stoddart
LIVERPOOL TO HOST _OPEN SOURCE CITY MICRO- FESTIVAL

20th to 22nd June 2008

A micro-festival of open source practice in the production of media art
and music

folly and SoundNetwork are kicking off the Summer with an exciting
collaboration bringing a micro-festival of art and music to Liverpool,
as part of the European Capital of Culture.

Liverpool has a strong history of doing innovative things with
electricity, from the birth of the power grid (Sebastian Ferranti) to
the early computer games industry (Psygnosis, Ocean, and ZTT). Liverpool
also has a formidable musical legacy inevitably centred around the pop
phenomenon of The Beatles but which spans every musical genre from
classical to electro.

Open Source City tips its hat to Liverpool's pioneering spirit by
offering a programme of art, workshops, masterclasses, talks and
concerts that shed light on the growing impact of Free/Libre Open Source
Software on the creative practices of today, in particular in media art
and music.

FLOSS offers opportunities to users, and developers at every skill
level to participate in the creative process, starting from the writing
of code all the way up to the final mix of your masterpiece. These are
tools that have the power to bring people together through creativity,
collaboration, knowledge sharing and, importantly, technology. So, how
will Open Source play a part in the music and art scenes of the future?
Maybe the answer lies in your handstake part.

Artists and speakers involved include goto10, Access Space, Polytechnic,
Simon Blackmore, Tom Chance, MediaShed and 64 Studio... Talks include
The role of FOSS in urban regeneration and a brief philosophical tour
of Copyright and Freedom. The hub of the festival is at Mello Mello
in the heart of Liverpool's creative quarter; 40-42 Slater St, Liverpool
L1 4BX.

To view the whole programme for the festival, please download the pdf
Festival Programme, and to book a paid workshop, download the workshop
booking form. Both available from folly's website at

[spectre] folly announces new Virtual Creatures online exhibition

2007-05-04 Diskussionsfäden Jennifer Stoddart
I am pleased to announce the launch of folly's new online experience:

Virtual Creatures is an online exhibition offering a playful and
interactive experience within a virtual environment for new audiences of
folly. Each artist-created Virtual Creature will exist within cyber
space as a living entity to be petted, visited and/or played with.

A different creature will be highlighted each month at
www.folly.co.uk/creatures to encourage visitors to explore the meaning
and intent behind the creature's creation and existence, connect with
other visitors and folly staff by contributing to discussions and
express their opinions in forums and comments sections.

folly is a not-for-profit digital arts organisation, working in
Lancashire, Cumbria and online.

***PRESS RELEASE***
New folly webspace a home to Virtual Creatures

www.folly.co.uk/creatures

The internet is full of artificial life, and as you surf the web you
might happen upon some of these invented beings. But for your
convenience and pleasure, in this online exhibition folly has brought
together in a new webspace the work of five artists who have created
their own virtual creatures for you to play with. These creatures all
live in cyberspace, where you can pet, tease, manipulate and connect
with them.

Once you've visited and fallen for these creatures, you can talk about
them in folly's specially created online forum where we will be
highlighting a different creature every month.

Internationally-renowned artists featured in the project include Igloo
and Jason Van Anden.

folly Programme Co-ordinator Jennifer Stoddart said Virtual Creatures
is part of our follyplay campaign, designed to reach out to new people
not yet familiar with digital art. By setting sophisticated pieces of
computer programming in a fun and interactive context, we hope many new
people will realise the possibilities of this exciting approach to
creativity.
