I am running alcatel modem with SuSe8 using Benoit's drivers with no
problems.
My ISP is Wanadoo.

If you have a standard SuSE PRO installation then you ***must first***
install the following packages:
auto config, build and make from Develop\Tools\Building as well as gcc from
Develop\Languages\C and C++
so that you can compile Benoit's drivers. The process is fairly straight
forward after that unless you make a typo!

2002-07-09 Thread Matthew Pocock

Hi Jonathan,

Firstly, I had the wrong path to pppoa3 in the script and had symptoms
like yours. Secondly, if you two ppp processes run at the same time,
they seem to both become very noisy. The only solution I found was to
kill them from a shell. Lastly, I was getting the drivers 'sticking'
untill I switched to the windows .dll for the modem application. No idea
why one works and the other doesn't. With the linux .o, the process
could stick for 15min or more before getting the ADSL synchronization
message.

Sory, no silver bullet here.

yeah i wrote an install bash script for bt and suse/ redhat and debian, he
used that but hes on nildram so had to change some things slightly if your
using bt, it should just work, it uses a script that brings the connection up
as the machine is booting,

check http://www.vnet.ndirect.co.uk/linux/btFAQ/

and download the suse script, its using an old version of the benoit drivers
though i gotto update it i aint had time.

any one else here im pretty much a newbie at bash scripts if u can download it
and give advice on how to improve it i would be greatful, or add changes /
take it over

[speedtouch] Which number the modem has dialled?

2002-07-09 Thread Michel Lambert

How can one verify which phone number the usb modem has dialled for any given ppp
session.
My pppd session works fine under linux. However I am puzzled because I did not give it
any phone number to dial.
I would like to check which dial number usb alcaltel modem has actually dialled, I
tried to give it ATV command in the script but he does not like it and for that
matter none of the AT commands work. I need to know this as I would like the modem to
dial a specific phone number which I have already paid my ISP to use. ATDnumber does
not work as alcatel modem does not seem to like interaction, so what is the way?

How can one verify which phone number the modem has actually dialled in any given pppd
session?

No I used this
http://benoit.papillault.free.fr/speedtouch/index.en.php3

As I already said, you can't do the : make
And as root: make install without adding the packages I listed below.

The only other problem that I know of would be your motherboard and/or bios
settings (for example if the bios are set at safe your PPP support is non
existant).

You can't. Your adsl connection is a direct connection between your
modem and the ISP's atm switch. So you do not need dialing to a phone
number as in V90/V92 technologies where your modem is using the
analogic phone line to communicate with the ISP's server.

Hope this help you a bit understanding how xDSL works.
