looks like you can't resolve DNS names.

try a dig A www.yahoo.com in your terminal.

Thanks for the advice. I opened a terminal and typed

 ping 68.142.197.78

and it kept repeating a message but with an icmp_seq count so I guessed
I hadn't done the right thing. So then I opened mozilla and typed

 68.142.197.78

to which it added http:// at the front and an / at the end and up came
yahoo but without the pictures. I tried a search but it didn't seem to
be able to find addresses such as http://www.yahoo.com/ and so on. I
also tried some variations on the

 68.142.197.78

altering some of the numbers and it seemed to be searching but as I do
not know the relevant numbers for my favourite websites I am stuck.

Can you tell me what to do now?

I look forward to hearing from you.

 Cheers

When I type speedtouch-start the modem flashes (left green led) for a
while then settles to on (the right led stays on all the time) and the
messages in the terminal window seem to indicate I have connected.

 My problem is:

I cannot access the web/internet, when I type mozilla or another
browser and a web address I get the can't find message. Am I doing
 something wrong?

Usually this indicates a DNS (name server problem). Can you ping an
 IP address, for example:

  ping 68.142.197.78

 ?

 There is diffrent problem :
 primary:
 - the 'kernel: usb-uhci.c: interrupt, status 3, frame# 34'
Unknow cause, wich firmware are you using?

which firmware did you mean, the one for the SpeedTouch ?
 secondly :
modem_run is run 3 times but this is a hot-plug problem with 2.4 kernel, a new
variable exist on 2.6 kernel, allowing to load only with the firt interface.

i know, i've talked about it with benoit on the IRC channel.
 third :
the script don't wait that the modem is ready to start pppd
As I am not using hot-plug nor the standard script, I can't help more.

Wich 2.4 kernel are you using?
2.4.27, compiled by myself, on a debian woody :)

Increase modem_run verbosity may help. This is not a problem as modem_run is
silent after the sync is gained.

benoit has gave me this link, in which i've found my case :
http://www.mail-archive.com/speedtouch%40ml.free.fr/msg06407.html

- under some circonstance, the mutex stay in memory and still indicate
that the firmware has been loaded where it is not.
