The values are right, that's what I use.
I have seen such long strings of "magic" values just when my ISP auth server
was not responding (down).

That's great news. But I guess the ppp libatm.so problem wasn't solved, am I
right (for Fedora, I mean)?

Great! Hoping that the patch has been/will be accepted.

This is ok for FC2, but I'm not sure it works ok with FC1 (which is 2.4
based, so it shouldn't use modprobe.conf...)

That's right. And the bug relative to this is still targeted at RH8.0
(or was it RH9)?
There was a pppd update some time ago, and I hoped they added it, but...
I don't think they'll address this, not for the near future. *shrug*

That FC kernel works flawlessy with the user space driver (1.3 here).
The problem is that version of FC2 kernel is the first one which
reintroduced the speedtch.ko kernel driver: as usual, if you are using
the user space one, one will need to rename or remove the kernel space
driver, as they don't like each other too much. Check ML archives for a
fix in the setup script of speedtouch-1.3, which adds support for FC2
(and is not totally correct, since that patch addresses just FC2, while
it applies wrongly to FC1 too).

Just for FC I would recommend the user space one, so you don't need to
go through the troublesome process of switching the pppd package, but I
understand your point! :)
Just my €.02!

2.4.1. My guess is I should get the sources and build again :/

[speedtouch] ST USB driver and Fedora Core 1

2003-11-09 Thread Giacomo Magnini
Has anyone tried to use the kernel module coming with FC1?
I get stuck after uploading the firmware, probably because plugin
/usr/lib/pppd/plugins/pppoatm.so is not there.
Any suggestion? Duncan? :)
Cheers, Giacomo.

[speedtouch] Sharing knowledge (ST USB + HP laptop)

2003-11-07 Thread Giacomo Magnini
I'd like to share my experience with other users of Speedtouch ADSl
modems (USB, stingray).
Yesterday I was able to finally install a dual boot RH9 on my laptop (HP
Pavilion ze4318ea). After reading something like 10 guides on similar
setups (different ZEs), I ended up disabling USB Legacy Support in the
BIOS, in order to not freeze the installation procedure (all of the
guides advise you to do so, to avoid lockups). After successfully
installing RH9, the time for installing the speedtouch driver and
getting the latest Errata came. Compilation was fine, I hooked up the
modem, launched modem_run, flashing lights and... segfault! Going
through log messages and using a more verbose output didn't help much.
Disabling the access to almost all irqs for the yenta socket (PCMCIA)
driver (as suggested in some drivers) didn't help either. Then, I
restored the USB Legacy Support in the BIOS and wroom! My modem worked
flawlessy, almost the same speed as I get from the desktop system, not a
single glitch. And that's using the latest BIOS (1.49) from HP.
BTW, modem_run crash logs were about not getting hold of an irq for the
connection (IIRC). Dunno if this can be regarded as a bug or as a HW
incompatibility.
Cheers, Giacomo.
