I'd be inclined to agree with Kurt. I don't think a simple whip like you
see on VHF would be very efficient on 4 MHz with these low-powered
transmitters. These beacons actually get out pretty well, and I'd suspect
the antenna is somewhat larger than that.

Oh, and I am almost certain that MX, as assigned by Enigma 2K, only refers
to single-letter CW cluster and solitary beacons and markers coming from
Russia and Eastern Europe.

My understanding is that MX refers to a single letter beacon cluster, no
matter where it is. These particular beacons send long dashes, "I" and
"W".

I used to use a 102-inch whip antenna with a huge loading coil on my car
for 160 meters. I was running more than a watt but I did work many states
while mobile with that setup.

But if someone can put a "stealth" dipole up for 4 MHz somewhere in the
desert, it will probably get out OK and still be hard to find.

"Stealth" dipole is relative... try finding a ten dollar bill fifty feet
off the side of the road, in an area of 100,000+ square miles, a half wave
dipole made of black or tan #16 wire isn't going to be found by anyone.
Many are just laying on top of rocks at high elevations, some are strung
between yucca trees and can't even be seen 300 feet away, let alone from a
dusty dirt road four miles away... The biggest problem seems to be wild
animals damaging the equipment, walking through antennas, stepping on
electronics, etc..

Dunno about that, but Havana Moon did trace some of the V5 numbers

Hi Chris & All,
This subject came up on site a few years ago, as it does from time to
time, and if I remember correctly was completely discredited as one of
the "numbers myths".

Chris, it would have been prudent to say "allegedly Havana Moon"

Hi Mike,

See Popular Communications magazine, Oct and Nov 1988 for the article
Havana Moon wrote.

Hi Chris & All,
An interesting article on some of the secure military installations in a
particular area of the Florida Keys with a liberal sprinkling of mystery.
Interesting that he uses, as any writer making a supposition but short on hard
facts prudently would, judicious application of :-
Alleged, Suspected, Possibly, Maybe, Supposed to be, Somewhere, I have no real
proof, Might be, Could not find, Not certain.

At no point in the article is there :-
I can confirm, I found, There is.

My personal interpretation of the article , once all the irrelevant jounalistic
padding (to the particular initial statement) is stripped out, is that he is
clearly saying :-
"The info I received was wrong, there's nothing there - but there could be
elsewhere"
and presented it in such a way that the reader is left with even more questions
arising.

I also note that the header states it's a "tribute to HM written IN his style"
and not "written BY" so is this a third party interpretation of some previous
material, I do not know the answer to that.

Cheers

That sounds like it was a fish net beacon.

I've seen mention of them on the web before. They're a watertight beacon
that transmits on an antenna wire that floats along with the top of a
drift net. These are used by fishermen to track down their nets when
ocean currents move them.

Generally, they transmit in very strange and inappropriate places -
amateur bands are not at all uncommon to find 'em in.

They've been referred to as phantom or mutant fishnet beacons. I saw a
photograph of one on the web somewhere, but I have yet to find it again.

Such a device, however, very well could have washed up on shore here in
Florida and been tied up between trees. Why would someone tie it between
two trees, though? Well... I'll admit, Florida people are weird. (That
Florida tag on fark.com comes in quite handy.)

We have a peculiar art installation on Miami Beach. It's apparently a
religious sculpture or *something*. It consists of a long wire (several
miles!) supported by poles, at the edge of the sand dunes. I'm tempted
to try throwing a wire over it to make contact and using it as a VLF
antenna...

Weather radio bands are:162.400 MHz-162.550 MHz.

Could it be the National Weather Service&NDBC?Just a thought.

At 01:09:19 it had another long beep followed by short beeps. It dose the long
