Re: [sqlite] [EXTERNAL] Re: No unicode characters in sqlite3 console prg

2018-08-13 Thread Lars Frederiksen
Hi Simon,

PRAGMA Encoding gave me "utf-8" and the db gives me correct greek letters in my
DBgrid in my Delphi program. So that is ok!
BTW: ταβέρνα η - the last letter represents the definite article :-)
I will read more about PRAGMA - here I am absolutely blank. PRAGMA is also used
in the FireDAC components of my Delphi programming tool
Thank you very much.

/Lars

"taverna" in greek should be "ταβέρνα". In UTF-8 I get

CF84 CEB1 CEB2 CEAD CF81 CEBD CEB1

Examining what you show ...

CF84 CEB1 CEB2 CEAD CF81 CEBD CEB1 20 CEB7

Which is the correct string with, for some reason, " η" on the end. So the
encoding of your database should be UTF-8.

It is possible that the contents of your database do not agree with the stated
encoding of the database. Please execute the command

   PRAGMA encoding;

in the shell tool and tell us what the result is. For details see

if you get UTF-8, then the fault is entirely within Windows, and the database
contains exactly what you would want.

Simon.

2018-08-13 Thread Lars Frederiksen
Hi everybody,

And thank you very much for your help.
The problem is not a BIG issue for me because i primarily use the console
program for creating databases. The unicode chrs are even inserted correct in
the greek field, because I can read them correctly in my DBGrid of my Delphi
program.
I just think it is an odd "behavior" of the cmd, but never mind. I might try to
experiment a little with codepages etc and see if this helps.
Thank you!

Select graesk, hex(graesk), dansk from gloser;

Check the hex output to see if it conforms to UTF specs; if so, then your
console is expecting a different encoding (probably ISO). If not, then your
data was probably entered from a source the encodes in ISO.

Of course. :) That is Windows console. You also have to elect to use an
alternate font with your console, one that encompasses enough unicode glyphs
for your needs. Click the upper left corner of your console window, choose
properties, then font. You might have to find additional fonts and install
them.

Consider this workflow using a french speaking Windows 10:

I:\>chcp
Page de codes active : 850

I:\>sqlite3 école.db "create table école (élève text); insert into école
values('élisabeth');"

Comment: While my code page is 850, I type some extended characters to create a
file, a table, a column and a value all using at least one extended character
which is properly supported by my code page 850. The input to SQLite is
correctly interpreted (see proof later on). But I would not have been able to
enter any greek characters or arabic, not part of my code page 850.

I:\>sqlite3 école.db
SQLite version 3.24.0 2018-06-04 19:24:41
Enter ".help" for usage hints.
sqlite> .once test.sql
sqlite> .dump
sqlite> .q

I:\>type test.sql
PRAGMA foreign_keys=OFF;
BEGIN TRANSACTION;
CREATE TABLE ├®cole (├®l├¿ve text);
INSERT INTO "├®cole" VALUES('├®lisabeth');
COMMIT;

Comment: So when dumping to file, there SQLite properly outputs UTF-8 without
my code page settings getting in the way. That is nice and should never ever be
changed. The fact that it outputted UTF-8 can clearly be seen above because the
various extended characters, encoded as UTF8 appear as individual bytes mapped
to my default code page 850.

Now switch the console code page to UTF-8 (65001):

I:\>chcp 65001
Page de codes active : 65001

I:\>type test.sql
PRAGMA foreign_keys=OFF;
BEGIN TRANSACTION;
CREATE TABLE école (élève text);
INSERT INTO "école" VALUES('élisabeth');
COMMIT;

And the text file content appears OK, confirming the actuel text file data is
UTF-8 (which you could validate by other ways, using a text editor properly
supporting the encoding).

Select graesk, hex(graesk), dansk from gloser;

Check the hex output to see if it conforms to UTF specs; if so, then your
console is expecting a different encoding (probably ISO). If not, then your
data was probably entered from a source the encodes in ISO.

Just a nod to check out (if you haven't already) the tutorials on w3schools.
https://www.w3schools.com/sql/default.asp

Not only do they clearly explain various SQL commands, but you can try them
out 'live' on their website using sample databases - nothing to install.

What version of sqlite are you using? There was significant efforts to improve
windows console unicode handling awhile back, which I think made it in for

If you're still seeing issues with a recent sqlite can you provide a short

Lars,

Please download the current version of the shell tool from the "Precompiled
Binaries for Windows" -- "sqlite-tools-win32-x86-324.zip". section of

Please run the version from this zip instead of 3.19. You do not have to worry
about updating the DLL libraries on your computer, since the shell tool does
not use the DLLs.

If this does not fix your problem ...

You execute the following commands:

We want to know what is really in those fields. If a column in your Gloser
table is called "sample" the command we want would be

SELECT sample,hex(sample) FROM Gloser LIMIT 1

If you do not know what columns are in your table, please execute the following
command

.schema Gloser

and post the results.

Re: [sqlite] Using Chinook

When using directories with spaces, its better (or necessary) to include
the whole directory in double quotes. Therefore, try entering this:
sqlite3 "e:\VB Resources\SQLite\chinook.db"

No problems with being a novice - everyone was a novice once.

Thanks,
Chris

Incorrect.

I do not know why your command is not working. Perhaps your
command-line process is expecting the entire filename to be quoted,
rather than just the one directory that has a space in its name:

sqlite3 "e:\VB Resources\SQLite\chinook.db"

But your original command worked fine for me on Win10. So I don't
know what the problem is.

[sqlite] Using Chinook

2018-08-13 Thread Roger Schlueter
I am just starting to learn SQLite so I am afraid my questions here will
be quite simple for a (very long?) while compared to those I have been
reading.  I'm starting by trying to follow the tutorial.

I have SQLite, the GUI, and chinook.db installed on Windows 10 but not
in the default directories.  In the cmd window I have this:

C:\Program Files\SQLite>sqlite3 e:\"VB Resources"\SQLite\chinook.db
Error: unable to open database "e:"VB": unable to open database file

It appears that SQLite does not like directory names with embedded
blanks.  Is that correct?  If so, is there a workaround?

What version of sqlite are you using? There was significant efforts to improve
windows console unicode handling awhile back, which I think made it in for
3.12/3.13.

If you're still seeing issues with a recent sqlite can you provide a short
example which reproduces the issue?

The sqlite3_os_init() routine is called by SQLite to initialize the
default VFSes for your system. sqlite3_os_end() undoes the
initialization. If you use SQLITE_OS_OTHER, then you need to supply
these two routines. If your VFS has no initialization requirements,
you can simply create stub routines that return without doing
anything.

See the source code for how these routines are implemented for Unix and Windows.

[sqlite] SQLITE Porting on FreeRTOS with STM32

2018-08-13 Thread Wei
I want to port on stm32 with sqlite.
But I get the followings:
.\RTOSDemo.axf: Error: L6218E: Undefined symbol sqlite3_os_end (referred from
sqlite3.o).
.\RTOSDemo.axf: Error: L6218E: Undefined symbol sqlite3_os_init (referred from
sqlite3.o).

1.download the latest sqlite3(3.24.0),copy sqlite3.c and sqlite3.h to my
project.
2.added the sqlite3.c file to the project. Obviously, sqlite3.h has to be there
too. Had to add three defines (SQLITE_THREADSAFE=0 SQLITE_OS_OTHER=1
SQLITE_OMIT_WAL=1) to make it compile
3.However I change the defines, I can't compile through.

The crash generally happens when core is very large more than 14 GB. Is
this due to high memory usage of process or system running out of memory.

There is only one reference to this stack where there were some memory
issue.

Any pointers would be useful.

[sqlite] Either bad constant or bad comment in os_unix.c

2018-08-13 Thread Shevek

In the nolock IOMETHODS:

https://github.com/mackyle/sqlite/blob/7bd4fc81a71bdc777151c747b2e6d3ee58994251/src/os_unix.c#L5203

Either the constant should be '1' or the comment should permit mmap. I
suspect the constant should be 1?

Re: [sqlite] mmap, madvise, mlock and performance

2018-08-13 Thread Shevek

having trouble with parts of the disk file being evicted from RAM during
periods of low activity causing slow responses, particularly before 9am. Has
anybody played with mlock and/or madvise within the sqlite mmap subsystem to
improve this behaviour?

Is this a genuine Linux machine running on physical hardware, or is it a
virtual machine ?

Yes, it's a genuine physical, we have Xeon and Epyc CPUs available.
Sometimes we have to run in VMs (up to 50Gb), but the bigger stuff is
all physical. We typically have 256Gb+ of RAM, so we aren't under
particular pressure to mmap a 100Gb database.

Are you intentionally doing anything that would contend for this memory ? In
other words, when a memory-mapped portion gets swapped out, does it make sense
what replaced it, or is it pointless and weird ?

Sometimes, Linux just seems to get unfriendly with a set of pages and
just maps them out. I've been watching it all weekend - right now the
system I'm watching has 165Gb free, and I watched Linux just dump 40Gb
out of RAM. :-( There are other jobs running on the system, and doing
I/O, but nothing that should put any real memory pressure on the system,
aside from disk I/O, backup, etc.

We're about to try mlockall(MCL_FUTURE) along with MAP_SHARED. It might
also be worth trying fadvise(), but I think kernel only honours a few
megabytes based on that. We did think of a page-toucher thread but that
risks thrashing as much as anything, but might be interesting for
monitoring page faults performance.

Later note: mlockall() failed because of JVM heap; we're going to have
to do something much more specific, like holding a secondary map and
mlocking that.

Warren:

Is the copy-everything-into-memory strategy not prohibitively expensive
at the 100+Gb scale? Is it worth sinking the time into implementing
that? Our rows are very small, only a few bytes each, so the per-row
overhead may be significant. Also, it would be nice to have a shared
mmap, rather than entirely private RAM, so we can run experiments over
the shared (readonly) store.
