Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Convert FLACs to MP3s?

2018-08-14 Thread Michael Herger
You know what would be cool? If I could just have a setting in LMS,
which would cause, upon a (re)scan automatically convert the collection
to mp3 and update the ones, where the metadata has changed.

Feel free to write a plugin for this...

But really: there are enough tools out there to do this once for good.
Why would you want the scanner to re-do this (or even check for changes)
upon every scan? It would add considerable overhead to every scan.

It would save so much time (and questions), and it can’t be much more

Some people do count the time the scan takes - in that case I doubt it
would save any.

I have installed the Qnap LMS everything seems working, however, I
cannot see my music files! I have created a Music folder under
Multimedia folder. In LMS I cannot locate the music folder.

You mentioned that you use Music Bee, have you tried Foobar2000 ? I
haven't used it recently but it may have the capability that you are
looking for.

I do know that JRiver Media Center can do what you are looking for. It
can automatically convert FLAC files to MP3 as it syncs the music on
your PC with your phone. It isn't free but there is a 30 day free trial.

I seem to have a rather similar use case as yours.
If you want to want to synchronize your whole collection as mp3s to your
phone, mp3fs is the simplest way to do it (and you wouldn't actually
have two formats of the same track). The only manual operation would be
to search/replace flac with mp3 in playlists.
However, for me, this isn't an option since my phone doesn't have enough
storage to hold my music library even as mp3s.
I've therefore written a script to
- search a playlist for all referenced music files
- copy the mp3s to the destination folder (preserving hierarchy and
tags)
- convert non-mp3s to mp3s in the destination folder (preserving
hierarchy and tags)
- normalize the volume of the mp3s
- copy covers to the destination folder

Combined with 'mounting my phone as a folder'
(https://github.com/whoozle/android-file-transfer-linux/), this makes
synchronizing music from a playlist to my phone a single fully automated
operation.

However, in order to use the script, you'd need to
- run it from the command line of a Unix-like system (Linux, MacOS
(probably), ...) (your NAS may qualify)
- install a few SW packages (python 3, ffmpeg, mp3gain)

A sample of the BBC MP3 streams play OK for me and I am outside the UK
using both BBC App and Tunein..

It looks like you have been playing the BBC MP3 streams and are not
using a plugin.

Have you saved these streams as Favorites ? If so then maybe URLs have
been updated.
Are you in the UK ?

The "timeout" error message usually means a network problem or pheraps
somehting has cached out of date info in your system.

If it is a network issue - restart Router, PC and LMS.

If it is a cache issues - stop LMS, do not use for about 15 mins and
restart LMS - the cache should have expired by then.

Yes that would probably be the way to go. Thing is: I prefer listening
to my FLACs at home, LMS can play them just fine. Also, I manage my
music collection with MusicBee on my PC, FLAC is not a problem there
either. I also make playlists in Musicbee that include both FLAC- and
MP3-files. These lists are routinely detected by LMS and played just
fine.
I use SqueezeCTRL to download files to my phone which is handy as,
amongst other things, it leaves the folder structure, file names and
tags as they are on my NAS. I just copy the playlists as .m3u-files to
my phone which finds the files in the list without problems.
If I follow your suggestions I will have a bunch of albums twice both in
MusicBee and in LMS and I just don't like this idea. (I do not have
FLACs of all my albums but only from those that have recently been
added.) Plus it creates inconsistencies in my playlists as the
.flac-entries will not be found...

Hi Gerry

Are you playing from mysqueezebox.com and are you in the UK?

If you are using LMS local server which version of the BBC iPlayer

Ronnie

Can you post a url that does not work?

Have you tried to clear the browser cache that you use for LMS or tried
resetting the router?

QTS: 4.3.4.0644 Build 20180710

uname -m: x86_64

In /lib/ there's what appears to be a link to ld-linux-86_64.so.2, not
the other one.

It would save so much time (and questions), and it can’t be much more than a
simple hook in the scan script, which executes a custom command to create the
mp3 when a new song is found or the metadata is updated?

I mean - LMS knows which tracks are new or have updated metadata, and when I
add new tracks, I do a rescan anyway.

Cheers,

Rainer

Thanks for the follow-up. I will give that a whirl. Of late, I've been
getting podcasts from the relay network doing the same thing. This is
good as at least it's more consistent behavior. The worst part of this
is that my system has not changed at all for many years (barring
underlying Linux server updates). There have been router firmware
updates as well so perhaps some changed behavior there is what's biting
me (the DHCP leases is an interesting possibility).
