Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Issue with international characters in filenames
There were some problems with 8.3 filename support disabled. But I didn't follow these discussions, you'd have to search this forum. This music / playlist folder display discrepancy may be something Michael would want to have a look at. It could be more than just a cosmetic problem. Would be great if you could confirm the .deb is working fine. Make sure you pick the right one (arm). BTW: I don't think 7.9.x is labeled beta anywhere. It might be confusing that we have to releases. But I consider 7.9.1 as much a stable release as 7.7.6. The difference is not stable or beta, but "officially supported by Logitech" vs. "Community release". Wow - thanks for all the replies! I ended up buying a Synology DS216j from a friend of mine for cheap as he was building his own NAS, stuck some 4TB drives in it and it's working great. Is that easy. Thanks. I find the 'man' for sox very complicated. There are so many -h uses, on gain and other functions, with or without explicit attentuation, and there even seem to be options to recover the gain if not needed. The compression problem is that I listen almost exclusively to classical music. The dynamic range of a good proportion of this is way beyond most other types of music. Fiddling around changing players because it's got too much for one part of one piece will be a real nuisance when sitting and just listening for an hour or 3. So I'll have to put up with it. If you're interested in the DietPi response you can find it 'here' (https://dietpi.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=12=2041=16317#p16314). Briefly, they aren't going to move to nightlys unless they have some additional testers. More importantly, they say there is *no* reason why you can't install the latest .deb package in their distribution. I had done this in the past but things got screwy. Might not have even been their package given the power of sudo. As a result, I have downloaded and installed the latest release and will see how that works. audiomike's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=67968 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110107 ___ Squeezecenter mailing list Squeezecenter@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/squeezecenter

SOX docs says -h provvide all the headroom you need to minimize clipping in all the effect chain, BUT I experienced situations where adding some extra headroom (negative gain) make it sound better. i.e. Balance (mix) effect is one of them. I'll have a try adding -6 db of gain. Compression is nice at low volume, but when louder it shows is own effects: it estroy the dynamic of music. I'm not aware of something like loudness for compression, so what you could do is prepare two or more different 'presets' at different level and recall them depending on the situation. One way to do that is to 'name' two (or more) players with different mac address (and name), then change the mac address of squezelite (-m), that way the server will use settings for that specific player (identified by the mac address). Is that easy. BTW the difference between 32 or 64 bit of internal precision is not big enought to make the decision about the volume control to use. I'll go for the one more suitable for you (I believe there is a specific option in order to integrate a Volume control in squeezelite, can't remember how). More important is that is never a good idea to process the same file or stream more than once, with special regard of dithering, so maybe you better apply all DSP at the player side in that case. I wrote Squeezelite-R2 and C-3PO because I firmly believe that performing 'extra duty' like decoding FLAC to wav or upsampling, applying convolution,... at the player side is bad and in many 'streamed down' systems you could hear the difference quite esaily, but systems become more powerful and less power consuming everyday, indeed.
