Thanks for the effort and suggestion. I'll give it (and WSL hosting) a go. The RPi suggestions are very interesting academically but I would have done that already, had it been an option. I asked about Windows specifically. [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Portable server install? (Windows external drive)
Going to take my music library on holiday on an external drive. I would like to try a postable install and happily only start LMS from the drive when it's plugged in obviously, but the standard MSI download doesn't even offer the option of selecting the install location. Is there any existing support for this (non-Win Service install) or am I best off installing from source, maybe even under WSL? I tried to search, but the terms "portable" and "install" are far too common. Note this is NOT for the player - that would be Squeezelite-X - just LMS. Yep. Convert to FLAC or ALAC (dbpoweramp and others will do this loselessy) and use the resulting files. Bit-for-bit identical on play back and tags work... [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Compilations / VA no longer at top level?
I am not sure if I am going insane or this is a bug/change in 7.9.1 - just updated as prompted today - but I am sure that I used to have a top level "Compilations" menu next to Artists and Albums etc. I have done a full rescan and a restart just in case, but it still only appears under Artists -> Compilations (I have set the name instead of Various Artists default, but even resetting that and rescanning changes nothing) Am I misremembering or has there been a change? Help me feel sane! Please... Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Perl 5.26 support?
I upgraded to Ubuntu 17.10 to fix some Emby (and Plex, but not so much) h/w transcode issues. This killed my LMS becasue I didn't think about perl versions. I am now, temporarily, running LMS on a Windows PC using a network share - but that gets turned off most of the time. It's been a very long time since I got into any real perl source maintenance but I thought I'd give it a try, downloaded the various archives and also cloned the git tree. I gave up after a while... One takeaway is that if nothing else, Digest::SHA1 should be replaced with Digest::SHA globally, as it's a drop in replacement except that for the OO interface you have to call ->new(1) instead of just ->new. This however means replacing the ./CPAN/Digest/SHA1* stuff I think. Not had a chance to look in detail, but have any records been kept of the changes made to the "custom" modules that are kept around and in the case of performance-only changes, with modern hardware is there any point in bothering if the upstream will not change things? Confused, of London... Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Which server operating system to choose now?
Running LMS for a while on a Windows 10 instance (a year or so) I found that perl couldn't handle special characters (UTF-16 I think - like the peace sign in Prince's "Sign O The Times"). Moving back to Linux and all was well. I have a handful of albums which just got lost on Windows. OK, this is luser error. It appears that there are multiple places to see the output format on the SB3 - the "More Info" fields lists the underlying format as FLAC but further down is says 687kbps VBR (Converted to 192kpbs MP3)... [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] LAME (FLAC -> MP3) and plays as FLAC
I have an SB3 at work and now that I have swapped my home router I need to limit my bandwidth and decided that 192k MP3 was enough. I dropped lame.exe and the dll in the server\bin directory (Windows 10) and even though the debug output shows the command line, the SB3 still plays FLAC: > [17-05-26 12:43:06.9262] Slim::Player::Song::open (558) Tokenized > command: > "C:\PROGRA~2\SQUEEZ~1\server\Bin\MSWin32-x86-multi-thread\flac.exe" -dcs > -- "F:\Music\Compilations\It's Cool\Disc 1 - 15 - The Kinks - Sunny > Afternoon.flac" | "C:\PROGRA~2\SQUEEZ~1\server\Bin\lame.exe" --silent -q > 9 --abr 192 - - | > I manually ran the above pipeline at a command prompt, directed the output to a file ("x.mp3") and checked it, it is an MP3 at 212kpbs. I have restarted LMS, power cycled the SB3 and nothing. The debug logs don't show much else happening. What can I check / do next? Is there a 7.9 build for your platform? I would suggest deinstall / reinstall with the 7.9 release and see. The logs lines you posted show errors, but if all your music is under "/volume1/Qmultimedia/iTunes Music" then I see no showstoppers. On the other hand if that folder is not the right one, then that's the problem. [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Cool story bro' ...
Sorry, this post is just one of those random ones, but things have moved on so much. I have to take my LMS hosting laptop to work as I need the bandwidth to sync/backup my music collection to Amazon Cloud Drive (moving from OneDrive) but I still needed a local server for at least on-line radio in the house. I started fretting about leaving a desktop PC on and installing LMS and all that. Then "lightbulb!" ... I have a Raspberry Pi 3 doing CCTV recording... and voila, there's a Debian ARM package, wget ..., dpkg -i ..., web access, done. That is a lot simpler and quicker than it was few years ago, and my RPi3 is now doing even more than it used to for very little cost. I didn't find any non-LMS bug reports for perl on Windows (I tried both Active State and Strawberry Perl ports) but I have not yet had time to see if the later perl releases address this - they cannot be just dropped into LMS even if they do. I would welcome any more insight if anyone finds any more info.
