My search fu must be pretty poor. All I've been able to find that is

Trying to get LMS running on Docker on DS918+. I pull down
lmscommunity/logitechmediaserver using the Registry - either stable or
latest - and after starting the Docker container I get nothing on port
9000.

Any tips to get started using LMS on Docker?

Thanks, that's extremely useful. In that case I will stay with NFS and
check the ability to generate playlists, as you suggested. You may have
saved me a lot of time trying the other option, and a lot of frustration
if I found out later that playlist creation doesn't work.

Maybe some day I'll dive deeper into my NAS. I bought it two years ago,
primarily for LMS, and then never used it for anything else, tbh. Now
it's a pretty luxurious solution, for just serving audiofiles to the LMS
on the picoreplayer.

NFS vs CIFS.
Once setup properly you are less likely to run into permissions issues
with NFS. The squash root bit means that everything will get written
with root.root on the NAS which equates to anyone in the admin group of
the NAS if connecting from a Windows PC to the NAS via Samba.
Arguably and I say that advisably NFS is quicker.

Connecting from pCP by CIFS is equally doable but depending upon how you
have set up users and groups on the NAS you can end up with situations
where the Pi can read the files but not modify or write to the folder.
You need this ability to create playlists that withstand a reboot for
example.

My 2p would be if you have everything working correctly with NFS then
stick with it but check that your LMS can write to the playlist folder
at an early stage.

Thanks so much for your explanations, Farina!
Actually this week in the evening I managed to point the music library
on LMS (picoreplayer) to the right location on the NAS (Synology), using
NFS. But it was a lot of work, and messing around (it's quite hard if
you don't know exactly what you're doing or why). But it was doable
eventually, with the documentation on picoreplayer.org and some
additional info from old forum threads.

Anyways, I'm not sure if this is the case but it sounds like CIFS might
be a pretty solid alternative. So I might read up on that a little and
give it a shot if it turns out to be a better option.

About your suggestion of using Raspberry Pis for your Hifi multiroom
system, yes I am aware of what you can do with them. But I did not
realize that it was relatively easy to do, until I read some more about
it online (which I did after being pointed to the Raspberry solution for
LMS by Michael Herger at the start of this thread).

So I'm now considering to resell one or both second hand Squeezeboxes
Classics that I recently purchased as backups. It is not so important to
keep them, knowing now that the Raspberry HiFi alternative is doable and
kindof fun. It's also more durable to return my backup SBs to the pool
of second SBs so that a fan can still put them to good use.

So thanks a lot for your support and suggestions.

Now for this weekend I have planned to install Spotty, to see how well
it works compared to Tidal :)

As suggested in my original post, PiCorePlayer is so much more than just
a host for LMS and I thought it might be helpful for those interested to
expand a little on how I use its enhanced capabilities.

In my case (using 4 Raspberry Pi3B's) it forms the basis of a house wide
multi-room solution which is considerably cheaper than Sonos et al.
These Pi's all run on varied combinations of hardwired Ethernet and
Wi-Fi network connections and allow me to play synchronised music across
my home using the full functionality of the Logitech Media Server
ecosystem. They have been very reliable and running for 4 years plus.

Whilst I do have some old Logitech devices to control the individual
PiCorePlayers running on each Pi (e.g. Touch, Duet handsets), I
predominately use an iOS application (available for iPad and iPhone)
called "iPeng" which is fabulous value. Its not free (as I recall about
UK £8, with an additional small payment of say circa £4 if you want to
unlock iPeng to use it as an inbuilt media player (interfacing with LMS)
on your iOS device - basically it will appear as a separate player, just
as the PiCorePlayers do, so in combination with bluetooth headphones you
have another player connected to LMS (and synchronised with the
others),

Apple store link here
https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/ipeng-9-squeezebox-remote/id767266886

iPeng support forum is here (I believe user "pippin" is its developer)
its been around since at least 2008, so a very mature product.

https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?51929-iPeng-support-thread/page824

So what is require for my solution ?

Basically all that is required beyond the PiCorePlayer software and the
Raspberry Pi, is an additional Pi HAT (a HAT is an additional board that
plugs into the exposed PINs on top of the Raspberry Pi) a more powerful
power supply and obviously some loudspeakers to output the music
through.

I should explain that the additional Pi HAT I refer to actually has a
built in DAC (digital to analogue converter) which is far superior that
on the Pi and also incorporates an amplifier (class D?). Given its
speaker output wattage power is rated at 35w, it requires a much
"beefier" power supply than those normally used but this just plugs into
the Pi (replacing the existing "weedier" standard Pi power supply).

There appear to be a number of audio HAT suppliers in the market. I have
successfully used IQaudio (who used to sell directly to the public, but
now seem to retail via The Pi Hut)

Product guide is here

https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0176/3274/files/20201209_IQaudIO_v32.pdf?v=1608196535

For retail sales see here (currently out of stock)

https://thepihut.com/collections/raspberry-pi-audio-hats/products/iqaudio-digiamp

https://thepihut.com/products/pi-digiamp-plus-power-brick-15v-3-33a-50w

Another manufacturer (which I have no experience of) is Hi Berry. They
seem to prefer to offer a complete retail solution, but you may be able
to obtain just the necessary bare hardware from them, to build your own
device.

https://www.hifiberry.com/blog/what-is-a-raspberry-pi-hat/#

If you have an existing Hi-fi setup (and don't require multi room -
unless you have Hi-Fi already in each room!) you could alternatively
investigate just mounting a DAC only HAT to your Pi e.g.

https://thepihut.com/collections/raspberry-pi-audio-hats/products/iqaudio-dac-pro

and taking the analogue outputs into a spare input source on your Hi-fi
amplifier

I have only had good experiences with IQaudio (UK based) and the HAT's I
have used (mine have been replaced with updated designs) have always
been PiCorePlayer supported.

To check what HAT drivers are available for hardware go to the
PiCorePlayer Web GUI under "Squeezelite Settings" tab and check drop
down list under "Audio output device settings" you can see range of
HAT's is supported.

Even if your projected device is not listed, the wonderful thing about
LMS (with its various plug-ins) and PiCorePlayers is the support
available (especially given its open source) is really excellent and
problems are seen as a challenge and overcome in a matter of days or
even hours. Contrast this with commercial products where they go "end of
life" or the manufacturer takes months to respond/resolve issues.

Finally (at the risk of overloading the reader) there is also available
a separate free open source software application called SqueezePlay
which basically is a software emulation of a Logitech Touch device. This
is available for multiple operating systems e.g. Mac,

I see you are reporting some issues with mounting files shares. Note
that I am no Linux geek, this is just what I have found, given some
experimentation, works for me.

(A) First on my Synology NAS, I created a file share called MEDIA. I am
using CIFS so no NFS permissions were required, but obviously any
account used (see 6 below) will need access to this share. My actual
music files are stored in a directory (or if you prefer folder!) called
"Music" within this share.

Next logon to your PiCorePlayer's web interface and go to the LMS tab.

Look for "Install and Enable additional File Systems" and go ahead and
install. I did NOT need exFAT - the lower of the two buttons.

You should find that once this is installed the fields within the "Setup
Network Disk Mount" section (lower down) become editable.

Here's what I did for them

(1) Tick "enable" box

(2) Mount point I called mine "media1"

(3) IP Address - insert IP address of your Synology NAS e.g.
192.168.123.123 (nothing else ie no "/" etc)

(4) Share Name "MEDIA" (same as file share name on your NAS - see A
above. Note may be case sensitive)

(5) Share type "CIFS"

(6) User name - see A above

(7) Password - self explanatory (note post mounting, this field will be
blank)

(8) Options I left as listed - "uid=1001,gid=50"

(9) Click the "Set NET Mount" button

You should now be good to go (obviously you will need to remap/rescan
your media folders location see option "Configure LMS" button on LMS tab
of PiCorePayer GUI

One related point to be aware of - further up the LMS page tab there is
an option to choose "Save LMS Server Cache and Preferences to Mounted
Drive"

I found that specifying the "Network Disk" option (by default if you
have a Mounted Drive setup, which is hopefully what you achieved above)
it will show (using my example above) "/mnt/media1/slimserver"

When using this Network Disk option I found LMS occasionally reporting
errors of being unable to write to file etc. Consequently I reverted to
using the "pCP Boot Disk" location option which I think is the default
option. I vaguely recall on this forum (Michael Herger?) recommending
using the SD location ie pCP Boot Disk.

Finally (as a belt and braces approach) whilst I have experienced no
problems with my SD card which has been running for years, if you want
to take a full backup image copy of your configured SD card - its always
nice to have, this can be done via the "Main Page" tab of PiCorePlayer
GUI

Look for "SD Card Image" button and select (new screen opens)

For "Image location", using same details as point (2) above I selected
(from drop down option) /mnt/media1/images

Save Location

Then (same screen) go down to "SD Card backup" and select "Create"
button.

This should then initiate a full image backup of your SD card to your
Synology NAS into your file share (see (4) above into a newly created
folder called "images" (if it doesn't you may need to manually create
the "image" folder on your NAS. This image will be date stamped so you
can create multiple images.

NB I think you will need to stop LMS server prior to initiating backup
(done from within the LMS tab and "Stop LMS" button)

Hope above is helpful and does not caused confusion.

Cheers

It will work via Remote Library but will be better from a user / library
POV if you mount the Synology music filesvia CIFS or NFS and then switch
off LMS on the Synology.

Ok, so, after checking a bit online, I realised that Picoreplayer on a
Raspberry Pi might be an easier option than trying to create a
containerized version of LMS on my NAS.

And I just happened to have a Raspberry 3B lying around as it was, so
gave it a shot and it was a breeze.

As I didn't have a large USB drive lying around, for the moment I am
just accessing the music files on my NAS via the LMS on my Raspberry,
which it finds under My Music, Remote Music Library - no additional
configuration was required for this, maybe because LMS is still on the
NAS as well (just telling for noobs like myself who might find this
later on).

I used this YouTube video for basic instructions on the installation of
LMS/Picoreplayer on the Raspberry:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_q8ZQSYwR8
(again, for any noobs, and I'm sure there are countless alternatives,
but I found this one quite good).

I'm only using the Raspberry as a server now, with the player function
turned off, but I can use it as a player any time I want, because I can
simply access it with the Controller from the Duet.

So I'm really happy that I've got everything up and running, including
Tidal.

Really happy that this worked because I still like my Squeezeboxes and
just not really in the mood to purchase a new multiroom system.

And a big thank you for MHerger for pointing me in the right direction.

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Beginner's question - how to install recent LMS on Synology DS118?

2021-08-08 Thread farrina

I would likewise strongly recommend you abandon a Synology based LMS and
move to a Raspberry Pi solution - the LMS software is now at revision 8
and continues to be developed and supported (not least by the previous
poster - a certain mherger!)

I am likewise a refugee from Synology and solved the LMS "problem" by
installing piCorePlayer on a Raspberry Pi3B. My music files continues to
be hosted on a file share on my Synlology NAS.

piCorePlayer is free software (voluntary donations are welcomed by the
developers) and its an absolute gem of a program. There is a
comprehensive browser graphical interface and a lot of "hand holding" to
assist e.g. remotely mount file shares, backup images of the program
etc.

Its functionality goes way beyond just hosting LMS - as can be seen from
this page https://www.picoreplayer.org/

Documentation here https://docs.picoreplayer.org/how-to/install_lms/

With a little bit of effort (and expense) you can easily resolve your
LMS woes.

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Beginner's question - how to install recent LMS on Synology DS118?

2021-08-07 Thread Michael Herger

Now, and this is probably a silly question for most of you, but can
anyone tell me where I can find one of the more recent versions (8.#),
suitable for the Synology DS118?

Synology unfortunately decided to remove support for LMS. There's no
future proof way to install LMS on a Diskstation. If your NAS supports
Docker, you can run a dockerized version of LMS. Or you get a Pi to run
LMS on...

[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Beginner's question - how to install recent LMS on Synology DS118?

2021-08-07 Thread jablonski

Hi All,

I have a couple of Squeezeboxes (Classic and Duet) and a NAS (a Synology
DS118). Until recently I only used them for listening to the radio and
my own files, and was sort of fine using an outdated version of LMS.

But I want to start using Tidal, for which I need a more recent version
of LMS.

Now, and this is probably a silly question for most of you, but can
anyone tell me where I can find one of the more recent versions (8.#),
suitable for the Synology DS118?

And can I simply install it by selecting a *.spk file via the
web-interface of my NAS?
(the same way I recently did to re-install
LogitechMediaServer-armv8-7.7.6-116.psk, which I found somewhere, after
the Perl update broke LMS).

Sorry if this was already explained before, but I couldn't find anything
on this forum or elsewhere (I assume it might be below the skill level
of the average member on this forum).

Thanks
