[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Playback from Windows 10 using all 5.1 speakers?

2021-07-01 Thread itm

I use Squeezelite-X for playback on my main desktop PC. I was wondering
whether there was any way of sending audio to all of the surround
speakers, rather than just the front two? My speakers are Cambridge
Soundworks DTT2200. I use the onboard Realtek sound on my B450 Aorus
Elite motherboard (which has separate outputs for
front/rear/centre-sub).
My Onkyo AV amp in the lounge has a setting which "upscales" 2-channel
stereo into a 5.1 setup, and I really enjoy listening to music that way.

Squeezelite normally output 2 chan. It would be up to the Windows audio
subsystem to convert 2.0 into 5.1
Have you checked the Windows speaker settings ? If Windows recognises
the 5.1 capability it will be shown as an option - whether it can be
made to work with squeezelite is the next step.

Windows recognises the 5.1 system. and I can test all 5 speakers
successfully, but a stereo audio stream only plays back over the front 2
speakers. I think it would need some sort of pre-processing to convert
it to multichannel format??

I use Squeezelite-X, but not as a player. Not sure if it makes a
difference, but have you tried playing with the "Player Output Device"
options in SQ-X settings?

I'd expect 2.0 to 5.1 is an option somewhere under Windows audio
subsystem.
In Windows, there are a number of different audio subsystem so options
may vary depending which one you are using.

Various posts on forums indicates that on some system with "standard"
Windows, system is set up to do 2.0 to 5.1 (these users were looking
turn it off !)

You should look for an option under Sound effects or Advanced setting or
under speaker properties. Depending on your hardware there may be
additional Realtek, MaxxAudio etc,application

I've trawled the Windows 10 audio settings and there's nothing there. I
did find an app called Realtek Audio Console, which allows me to set my
Speaker Configuration to 5.1, but I still only get output from the front
2 speakers when I play back a stereo track.

If you can find the Microsoft High Definition Audio configuration then
try
High Definition Audio Device -> Properties -> Enhancements tab ->
Speaker Fill
I think that will convert stereo to 4.0 - i.e. the R/L Rears will be
same as R/L Front.

OK I think I've found a solution. I discovered and installed a Windows
app called Realtek Audio Console. If I set the Speaker Configuration in
this app to "5.1 Speaker" and turn on the "Speaker Fill" option I get
stereo audio routed through all 5.1 channels :0)
