[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] What's the highest version of LMS that will run on a Synology DS214p on DSM 6.2.4?

2022-02-15 Thread Whitedb

Hi, I wonder if you can help me. I have been happily running LMS
8.1.1-1610364020 (pinkdot) on my Synology DS214play under DSM
6.2.4-25556 Update 3. I avoided the Pearl update so it continued to
work.

Unfortunately after I added a new plugin, ShairTunes2 (fork), it crashed
and would not restart. I SSH'd into the NAS and browsed the LMS plugin
folder but could not find it to remove so I uninstalled LMS.

Docker is not a solution for the 214play but fortunately I had saved the
LMS installer and had version
"LogitechMediaServer-i686-8.1.1-1610364019.spk". I tried to manually
re-install it but I got an error message that it was not compatible. I
also had version "LogitechMediaServer-i686-8.0.0-1605892076.spk" and
tried that and it installed and runs fine. I wonder if Synology have
put something in the DSM updates to prevent installation as it was
previously on a slightly lower version when I last updated.

So my questions:
1. What is the latest version of LMS that will run on DSM6.2.4 and where
might I be able to get it?
2. Secondly, are there anything tricks I can do to get the 8.1.1
installer I have to run anyway?

Thanks for your suggestions.

The one and only trick you should consider: get a Raspberry Pi to run
LMS on. Forget trying to run it on the Synology. You wouldn't be able to
update LMS nor the system itself, which would be a security risk.

Thanks for the suggestion but sadly in the UK a RasberryPi is not an
option at the moment. The lead time from retailers is over a year and
second hand ones are going for £200 on eBay. The chip shortage has hit
them very hard. I have already looked at Picore and see it as a longer
term solution but need to keep the Synology going for a while longer

Ok, that's sad. I just checked with a local shop here in Switzerland.
Yep, they're pretty much out of stock indeed :-(.

I'm sorry I'm not of much help then... but there's a main "LMS on
Synology" thread where you mind find some other users able to provide
you with some copy of a working file.

I wonder if you could get away with raspberry pi 3b/3b+ which I seen on
eBay.co.uk?
Although rpi4 is definitely recommended I doubt rpi3 will be slower then
you DS214play.

But yeah £200 rpi4 is bonkers.. it would make more sense getting new NAS
capable of running docker and keeping ds214play as purely backup for new
NAS

Looks like very few Pi's worldwide - there's even a web site to track
them

Also French store with stock of 2gb version doesn't even have English
site version so I doubt they ship to UK :)

I'm listening (headphones) to LMS on a rpi 1 model b+ :p

It's just the configuration process that is slow on the older rpi :)

I do have a couple or so spare

Ideally rpi4. I think you need at least 1gb of RAM

Meh... LMS runs on a Touch which utilizes an ARMv6 CPU and 128MiB of
RAM. I run LMS myself on a Marvel Kirkwood ARMv5 with 512MiB of RAM and
several other services active (email, smb, apache). Yes, startup takes
close to a minute, searching a 1TB library is a tad slow and transcoding
needs to be avoided as accessing any of the other services will
interrupt it but it runs just fine serving different content to 5
players in my home.

I meant to say you need at least 1gb ram .. "for a smooth operation"..
Not as minimum requirement.. I had LMS on rpi1b running max2play years
ago for a long while, but I would not recommended anyone this experience
now.

Touch is not able to run LMS.. it's tinyLMS or whatever is called
,heavily limited and again not advisable to use (that's why community
firmware completely removed it)

Low powered devices might be ok for some people and small libraries but
for recommendation to replace OPs ds214play I think rpi3b is minimum
