Different gain tags definitely doesn't interfere with merging. Agreed
it's not obvious what to do there; I asked about this recently. I don't
think the default behaviour is correct, but…

Oh, I get that each person has their preference on handling albums like
this. The reminder about leading and trailing spaces is huge. That is
not easy to see either.

On stripping everything but the id3v2.3, that isn't always as easy as it
sounds. mp3's shouldn't really have ape or other tag types besides id3,
so occasionally when they are there, software won't know it (usually
because something has gone corrupt). Stripping some tags won't
necessarily strip all you want off. The only solution in that (rare)
situation is to strip ALL tags off and then put back the id3v2.3 tags
onto the blank file. MP3Tag allows this through proper settings for
cutting and pasting; I think I set it to copy only id3v2.3 tags then to
delete all tags: (1) copy tags - puts 2.3 tags in clipboard, (2) delete
all tags - basically strips the full header for metadata, (3) paste tags
- puts the 2.3 tags that are in the clipboard back.

I recommend having backups prior to starting this because accidents can
happen, and between (2) and (3) you are left with an untagged file.

I'll note again, this is a rare situation, but when you feel like you've
covered almost every possibility without success, it may be one that
works.

Something else I've posted about in the past, is that LMS respects
leading and trailing spaces. So if u have any, in say the album artist
field, disc field, etc, could be the issue, assuming the behavior is the
same.

Also, I don't merge multidisc sets, bc I want to see one artwork per
physical disc, and also bc I set RG on a per physical disc basis.

If u have some albums that properly merge, and some that don't, try
copying all the files for one that doesn't to a new single folder, and
see if that one works. If it does, I'm not sure tags are the issue...

(I also strip everything but id3v2.3 tags from mp3s, so no ape, lyrics,
v1.x, etc)

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] What are the rules for LMS for merging albums from different subdirectories?

2019-12-18 Thread emalvick

Some one else noted this, but having both ID3v1 and v2 can be a problem
if for some reason they get out of sync. LMS will read v1 first (if it
is there) but most taggers might only show v2 unless v2 is removed.
I've had to really dig in at times.

A problem I've also had is capitalization. For instance, I've had where
one album is " a " and another file had " A " That
ended up as two albums. It was amazing how I spend a day or two trying
to find that.

Finally, I don't know how LMS would treat the Replay Gain tags for
albums. Do they have to be the same? I know when I rip CD's, each disk
will get its own value. I usually use MP3Tag to merge the albums
together with tags (I set track numbers of form 101, 201, etc... where
the hundreds place is disk number); I usually use the most conservative
replaygain value for the whole album (they usually aren't far off, but
not the same). I haven't had to deal with ReplayGain in that regard,
but I could see LMS looking at that and expecting it to be the same for
the whole album. It shouldn't matter, but who knows.

Agree with Garym, it must be a tagging problem
Things to check for:
Make sure there is only one tag version in the files, if you use mp3 it
can have both id3v1 and id3v2, think LMS gonna use v1 if present.
Make sure Album name is exactly the same, if it has a space at the end
it's hard to see

In the screen shot you see an example from mp3tag how I tagged an album

I usually work with the aimp advanced tag editor, but since I tried to
get into the bottom of this problem I tried to check also mp3tag. It's
not that. I'm still looking for a solution...

in my case when I’ve had this problem it was always caused by a subset
of files having a single tag field that was different. The hard part is
that it may not be a field you even use. mp3tag program is useful for
opening all files, selecting show extended tags, then you can see any
differences. Another approach is to simply strip out all the tags and
retag. Mp3tag can help there too. And it does almost every codec.

Thank you all.
Unfortunately, I tried everything already, without any success.
I mean, I tried moving files into one directory and I know that can
solve the issue easily, but since I can see on my system that in some
cases it is not needed, and the LMS knows to take files from different
subdirectories and merge them, I wanted to know all the roles in order
to understand what appears to be inconsistent.

Yes, I know about the compilation tag = 0 or 1, and I know that the
album name and main artist have got to be exactly the same in all
files.

For little more details:
I have an album with 3 CDs. The most I could get is that the LMS
recognizes that the first track from the 2nd album is part of the
compilation, and is the sequence of the 1st CD, but other than that it
shows the rest 2nd CD for it own and the 3rd one as well.
I've had so many tries with the tags and locked online for any
documentation regarding this issue. To this moment the only thing that
could work it out is to redo the directories and put all the files in
one directory.

I have set it up to make all track file names also contain the

I'm not sure if this is still an issue: If you have a disc with x tracks
and you change (or just re-save) n tracks while not preserving the
files' timestamps and you run "Look for new and changed media files",
you would get two discs: One with x-n tracks and one with n tracks.
Clear "library and rescan everything" resolved this.

But maybe this is fixed and/or OS-dependent and/or just a feature of my
setup.

Agree. My multidisc CDs are created with a parent directory for the
album and subdirectories for each disk (Disc 1, Disc 2, etc.). I've
found that multidisk CDs get merged as one so long as ALL album-level
tags are identical, except for discnumber or comment. There may be
other tag fields that don't matter in grouping too. I've certainly seen
situations where LMS has separated some of my multidiscs into multiple
albums, but typically found something like totaldiscs tag being
different as the culprit.

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] What are the rules for LMS for merging albums from different subdirectories?

2019-12-10 Thread cdmackay

I rip to FLAC+CUE, and split multi-CD albums into separate directories,
one per CD, and I want LMS to merge them into a single album, which it
does most of the time.

When it doesn't it's generally because something is different about one
of the CDs tags. i.e. LMS will merge them as long as the main elements
are the same.

Recently, I've had Volumes of a large series that has around 10 CDs per
volume. Sometimes LMS will show me two albums, one with 9 CDs and a
similar one with only 1 CD. On closer examination of the tags I can
generally find the thing in that single CD's tag that is stopping it
being merged with the others, and change it.

I also use DISCNUMBER & DISCTOTAL/TOTALDISCS tags

Not sure if any of the above helps :)
