You should not have to change the SG command line or configuration.

Ok!

Whats needed is a patch from

No - they see the IP address oft that host which runs (among other
services) the service/program squid.

Maybe you want to check the http headers HTTP_CLIENT_IP

Hallo, HillTopsGM,

Du meintest am 04.09.13:

[wsusoffline]

Thanks for this tip - I know you have mentioned it before, but what I
am trying to avoid is on an on going basis (every week) when there is
an update, having all 12 computers download the same file.

This is a great tool if you are always doing fresh installs - that's
fine - but it doesn't help me day to day.

But surely it helps! It's a data base for all desired windows versions,
it's completed/refreshed every time you want.

The other thing is that it doesn't look like the tool is updated as
frequently as windows updates come out - in other words, it doesn't
 appear to incrementally update itself.

Updateing is a cron job. Only not yet existing files are downloaded
during such a job, and they stay in the directory as long as Windows
looks for them - that's another way than staying in the squid cache.

Am I correct in assuming this?

No. Just take a try, for about some weeks. Microsoft has a fixed patch
day.

This is why I'd really prefer to have the proxy work properly - just
set it up and forget it. That's the dream.

The squid cache deletes old files, because it's a cache.

By the way: my wsusoffline directory contains actually the updates for
Windows XP (32 bit), Windows 7 (32 bit and 64 bit), that's nearly 7
Gbyte. I wouldn't fill a cache with so much nearly static files.

Hallo, HillTopsGM,

 I was looking into it more and so can you confirm this for me;

If I run the updategnerator.exe file that will ONLY add the files I
don't have right at the moment?

Surely.
wget checks if the file already exists.

If that is so, then anytime windows notifies me that there are
updates, I'd simply have to run this updategnerator.exe file to get
the new ones; and then go to all the other machines and run the
 updateinstaller.exe file. Is that right?

That's right.

 Helmut Hullen wrote

.. . . when you say it is a cron job, are you saying that it is part
 of the *wsusoffline* program itself?

No - writing a cronjob is the administrator's job. But that's a very
simple job.

These updates that it collects come directly from Microsoft?

Yes.

If this is the case, this would be tremendously helpful!

Oh, and what happens when http://www.wsusoffline.net/
http://www.wsusoffline.net/ comes up with a new 'version', do you
have to start all over again?

That depends!
Windows: you're told that there is a newer version.
Linux: the administrator has to watch the wsusoffline website.

Installing the program: under Linux just copy it into your desired
directory; it overwrites only the wsusoffline binaries/scripts.

But that's a wsusoffline problem (if it is a problem), no squid problem.

make sure that I understand what it is that is being said:

*Question 1:* I do not actually have to run these command lines
UNLESS it appears that Windows is not using the proxy - is that
 correct?

Something like that - you can (perhaps) define the proxy configuration
in every application. But sometimes it's more easy for you when the
application finds the configuration in HKLM.

*Question 2:* I just ran proxycfg at the CMD Prompt on a Windows 7
Machine and the response that I got was:
 (QUOTE)
'proxycfg' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
 operable program or batch file.
 (END QUOTE)
Would I be correct in assuming that Windows 7 machines are not able
to take advantage of those commands, or did I do something wrong?

May be - I've just tried this command under W2k, and W2k didn't
recognize it too.

Searching for proxycfg lead to

At the end of this FAQ page:

 http://wiki.squid-cache.org/SquidFaq/WindowsUpdate

they give some windows command prompt commands.
Do these apply to all of the windows versions like Vista Windows 7
 and now 8 as well?
Or do you run them only if you have an issue?

 Thanks for the help.

 (Start of The Windows Commands)
C:\ proxycfg
 # gives information about the current connection type. Note: 'Direct
Connection' does not force WU to bypass proxy

C:\ proxycfg -d
 # Set Direct Connection

C:\ proxycfg -p wu-proxy.lan:8080
 # Set Proxy to use with Windows Update to wu-proxy.lan, port 8080

c:\ proxycfg -u
 # Set proxy to Internet Explorer settings.
 (End of The Windows Commands)

If I have understood the system (I'm not sure):

a new system always tells Direct connection,

proxycfg -u

copies the HKCU entry to HKLM, and then proxycfg tells the entries you
had defined for some special user for all users (system wide).

Du meintest am 18.05.13:

I have enabled squidGuard within a huge network.

[...]

What are you using squidGuard for anyway?

There are 2 different options/decisions:

a) using redirect/rewrite (as squidGuard and ufdbguard do) or
using the squid options acl and http_access (as squidblacklist
does)

b) using a long time maintained blacklist (p.e. shallalist or
squidguard.mesd.k12.or.us/blacklists.tgz) or a newer one (as
squidblacklist does) and/or using self made lists and/or using lists
from some other places

Using blacklists is (especially in schools) a job with many legal
implications; people who use them should at least have a good feeling.
And using something like squidguard gives such a good feeling - even
when such a program may be technically ugly. But the teacher who uses it
as a helper has to explain this helper to many parents, and sometimes
he/she has to epxlain it to a court of justice (but he never has to
explain it to programmers etc).

Yes - I know how to circumvent (? - please excuse my gerlish) such
filters like squidguard.

2013-05-18 Thread Helmut Hullen
Hallo, Amos,

Du meintest am 18.05.13:

SG has numerous problems which caused it not to do what it's
supposed to, including that emergency mode thing. Here are some
 things to consider:

 1) a BIG blacklist is overhyped - when I had a good look at our
requirements, there was only a small percentage of those websites
we actually wanted to block, the rest were either squatting
websites or non-existent, or not relevant. Squid could blacklist
(eg ACL DENY) those websites natively with a minimum of fuss.

May be - it does a good job even with these unnecessary entries.

If the list is that badly out of date it will also be *missing* a
 great deal of entries.

Yes - may be. But updating the list is a really simple job.

 2) SG has not been updated for 4 or 5 years, if that's your latest
version, you are still out of date.
I can't see a big need for updating. Software really doesn't need
changes (updates) every month or so.

For regular software yes. But security software which has set itself
out as enumerating badness/goodness for a control method needs
 constant updates.

May be - but squidguard does a really simple job: it looks into a list
of not allowed domains and URLs and then decides wether to allow or to
deny. That job doesn't need constant updates.

More to the point, you will not find much help now. or anyone to
fix it even if you could prove it's a bug.

That depends! - I know many colleagues who use squidguard since
years; the program doesn't need much help.

During which time a lot of things have progressed. Squid has gained a
lt of ACL types, better regex handling, better memory management, and
an external ACL helpers interface (which most installations of SG
 should really be using).

Which brings me back to my question of what SG was being used for. If
it is something which the current Squid are capable of doing without
SG then you maybe can gain better traffic performance simply by
removing SG from the software chain. Like csn233 found it may be
 worth it.

The squidguard job is working with a really big blacklist. And working
with some specialized ACLs.

I know squid can do this job too - and I maintain a schoolserver which
uses many of these possibilities of squid. But then some other people
has to maintain the blacklist. That's no job for the administrator in
the school.

better traffic performance may be a criteria, but (p.e.) blocking porn
URLs is (in schools) a criteria too.
Teachers have to look at legal protection for children and young
persons too.

Please excuse my gerlish.

Hallo, Amos,

[...]

The squidguard job is working with a really big blacklist. And

Which apart from the list files, is all based on received information
 sent to it by Squid.

I know squid can do this job too - and I maintain a schoolserver
which uses many of these possibilities of squid. But then some
other people has to maintain the blacklist. That's no job for the
 administrator in the school.

You are the first to mention that change of job.

 The proposal was to:
   * make Squid load the blacklist
   * remove SG from the software chain
   * watch response time improve ?

Nowhere in that sequence does it require any change of who is
 creating the list.

But that's one of the major problems for a user of any blacklist: who
maintains this blacklist.

That's no squid job, of course.

At most the administrator may need to run a tool to convert from some
strange format to one Squid can load. (FWIW: both squidblacklists.org
and Shalla provide lists which have already been converted to
 Squid-compatible formats).

Hmmm - sounds interesting.

[...]

Note that we have not even got near discussing the content of those
regex lists. I've seen many SquidGuard installations where the
rationale for holding onto SG was that squid can't handle this many
 regex.

And at least for such purpose as a schoolserver that's a valid objection
...
A teacher has to teach pupils, not to build regular expressions for a
machine.

Listing 5 million domain names in a file with some 1% having
a /something path tacked on the end does not make it a regex list.
** split the fie into domains and domain+path entries. Suddenly you
have a small file of url_regex, a small file of dstdom_regex and a
long list of dstdomain ... which Squid can handle.

Yes - I know.
But that sounds more like a theory, not like a downloadable solution.

And again: who maintains this solution?

OK I've always gone to /var/log/squid, which is empty, but I see
there is now a squid3. Logs are there, although don't seem to be
 getting rotated.

Maybe a debian error. Rotating ist mostly a job for logrotate, and the
most config files are in /etc/logrotate.d.

What tells

squid -v

What tells

Hm, it appears that squid has built-in log rotate? Wouldn't the

It would be best to sort that out krb5 stuff first IMO. The above

That file is at least part of the heimdal packet.

Once you have krb5 sorted out if it is still halting Squid build you
can use --disable-strict-error-checking to get Squid to build. The
usual lack of guarantees about both operation and future build
success if you use it regularly though.

acl admin 10.77.88.47
http_access deny !localnet

acl admin 10.77.88.47
http_access allow admin
# they are privileged

acl blacklist src /etc/squid/blacklist
acl schueler 10.77.88.1-10.77.88.41
http_access allow !schueler
# managers have more rights
# you may define a special acl for managers; it's not necessary in this

http_access allow schueler !blacklist
# pupils are restricted

http_access deny all
# all other cases

The time restrictions are not implemented; take a look at listing 1 in

Hallo, Amos,

Du meintest am 25.01.12:

If I changed the entry in /etc/resolv.conf then, Is there need to
 reload/reconfigure the squid?

Yes. Squid does not monitor the configuration files for changes. It's
on the feature wishlist, but nobody has had enough interest to code
up a small background ticker event to do the checks.

I use incron from Lukas Aiken,

  http://inotify.aiken.cz

with the file /etc/incron.d/squid with the contents

  /etc/resolv.conf IN_MODIFY squid -k reconfigure

That means: if /etc/resolv.conf is modified then run squid -k
reconfigure.

There are some other programs which also work with inotify - maybe
it's hard for a squid developper to look for the special routine(s) on
a special target machine.

incron hasn't changed the last two years - don't know if Lukas still
works on it. But the program doesn't seem to need changes ...

[squid-users] Squid 3.2.0.14: disk size

That disk size is completely wrong - why?

maximum_object_size 4096 KB

Re: [squid-users] Problem with deny_info

2011-09-22 Thread Helmut Hullen
Hallo, Amos,

Du meintest am 22.09.11:

 3.0 and 3.1 only accept % parameter to deny_info.

The extended dynamic format is a new 3.2 feature.

Where are these parameters explained?

Re: [squid-users] [3.2.0.12] ErrorDetailManager.cc(222) parse: WARNING! invalid error detail name:

2011-09-22 Thread Helmut Hullen
Hallo, david,

Du meintest am 22.09.11:

Dear i receive this error in cache.log just after compiling the
 3.2.0.12 version

ErrorDetailManager.cc(222) parse: WARNING! invalid error detail name:
 P?.?P?.?09_V_ERR_DOMAIN_MISMATCH
 2011/09/22 15:15:23 kid1| errorpage.cc(352) loadFromFile: parse
 error while reading template
 file: /usr/share/squid3/errors/templates/error-details.txt

Maybe I've seen the same error, with squid-3.2.0.10. Compiling squid
without enable-ssl cured that problem (but that's no real solution).

Re: [squid-users] deep analysis of some request

2011-09-09 Thread Helmut Hullen
Hallo, alexus,

Du meintest am 09.09.11:

 66.55.138.70 - - [08/Sep/2011:18:59:26 +] GET
 http://ecs.amazonaws.com/onca/xml? HTTP/1.1 200 135861 -
 Mozilla/4.1 TCP_MISS:DIRECT

That line shows that the machine 66.55.138.70 tries to get a
 document from http://ecs.amazonaws.com/onca/xml
And it gets the document (with about 130 kByte).

66.55.138.70 is actually my own IP, in this log you can't really see
real remote IP, but that's not an issue
I just have alot of request like this, so I want to somehow do some
sort of capture to see what's going on there...

Sorry - your client machine 66.55.138.70 requests a document from
ecs.amazon.com - ask the user of this machine why he oder she wants this
document.

squid only manages the transfer.

Re: [squid-users] deep analysis of some request

2011-09-08 Thread Helmut Hullen
Hallo, alexus,

Du meintest am 08.09.11:

Is there a way to analyze somehow deeper what's going on with this?

 tss# grep 'http://ecs.amazonaws.com/onca/xml?' access.log | tail -1

 66.55.138.70 - - [08/Sep/2011:18:59:26 +] GET
 http://ecs.amazonaws.com/onca/xml? HTTP/1.1 200 135861 -
 Mozilla/4.1 TCP_MISS:DIRECT

66.55.138.70 belongs to Alexusbiz Corp - seems to be one of your IP
addresses.
Seems that this request is no squid problem.

[squid-users] ACL for authorized users

2011-08-28 Thread Helmut Hullen
Hallo, squid-users,

is it possible to define ACLs for special users (authentification via
NCSA works)?

Using squidGuard is possible (and there I can define ACLs for user
or userlist) but I'd prefer a solution with the pure squid.

Searching in the Wiki didn't help - maybe I haven't found the right
questions.

squid version 3.2.0.10

 proxy_auth ACL.

 Like so:

Nice - thank you!

(I should have studied the squish examples ...)

Hallo, alexus,

Du meintest am 27.08.11:

is there a blacklist of URLs/IPs that contains say an adults sites? I
need to be able to feed that into my squid, people abusing it with

What about squidGuard?

Or at least the blacklist for squidGuard:

Re: [squid-users] squid redirecting attempted downloads

2011-08-22 Thread Helmut Hullen
Hallo, Dave,

Du meintest am 22.08.11:

We are having an issue where users try to download a file (an email
attachment, setup file, etc.) and are redirected to a page on our
intranet that says something about file downloads not being allowed.
The person I took over from here says that it may be something
 configured in the squid.conf file.

I found the file but have no idea how to disable or modify this
 setting.

What's the name of the file?
Can you find this name somewhere in the squid.conf?

Or does squid invoke some other program like squidGuard?
