I have already explained why in the message below.

Only because the URL appears to work when not using the proxy does not
mean the server is not utterly broken beyond repair and needs to be fixed.

Henrik

Thank you for your mail. But the point is, the URL works fine when
connecting directly (w/o squid proxy).
Any clues ?

Raja.

The server is broken and most often fails to return the full response when
receiving a HTTP/1.0 request.

There is nothing Squid can do about this. The problem does not only affect
Squid but any HTTP/1.0 application trying to access that server.

It should be noted than even when receivig a HTTP/1.1 query the server
does not always work properly. Quite often it hangs in the middle of a
response. On HTTP/1.1 queries it most often (but not always) recovers
after about 5 seconds, but if receiving a HTTP/1.0 query it most often
simply closes the connection when this happens (but sometimes it does
recover).

Someone who needs to have this service running needs to contact Yahoo and
tell them their server is not working correctly. I can help by providing
technical proof the server is malfunctioning but I can not help with
correcting the problem. Most likely there is a load balancer or the like
which is malfunctioning.

Henrik

Thanks Werner, for testing it. But http://msd.my.yahoo.co.uk/portal_admin

so, def. there is a catch in squid config only somewhere.
Even , upgrade also would not help in this case.

Same problem with Squid 2.5 Stable 4:

Hi Guys,
I have a strange problem with this URL

http://msd.my.yahoo.co.uk/portal_admin

I am using squid-2.5 stable 1 with ncsa auth. The page does not load fully,
whereas if i try without proxy, it works fine
can u also try the url and let me know if it is going thru fine ?
pls give me a hint as to where the problem could be. My browser (IE) gives

[squid-users] reiserfs or ext3

2003-11-06 Thread Raja R
Hi Gurus,
I am planning for a new installation of squid-2.5 s4 with around 4*4 GB of
cache dirs on linux 9, 1 GB RAM, scsi disks
I need your advice on filesystem type which shud be used for the cache dirs.
Ext3 or ReiserFS ? Which one is better ?

How will the squid.conf parameter change for the cache_dir option for both
the file systems. I dont think we can specify ext3 or reiserfs there.
Pls suggest.

[squid-users] cache_swap_low and cache_swap_high

2003-11-05 Thread Raja R
Hi All,
I have a machine with 512 MB RAM (1 GB swap), p-3 with cpu speed 930 Mhz. I
have 4 cache partitions of sizes around 3 GB. (around 60 % configured in
squid.conf)
I have around 425 users and have a 2 Mbps internet link. The Hard disk is
IDE. It is Not a Server Class machine.
I am getting a poor response for internet , though the link avl. is high.
I am feeling squid server is the bottleneck.
Can you pls explain the cache_swap_low and cache_swap_high params w.r.t the
performance and if I can tune up any other params to speed up my proxy
server ?
My cache_mem is 8 MB.

PLS SUGGEST

TIA,
Raja.

[squid-users] ftp download query

2003-10-02 Thread Raja R
Hi all,
i am using squid 2.5 stable 4 and i have a query..
i am using reply_body_max option to limit the download size to 5 mb,
for http, it works fine..
for ftp , when the it is in url style, squid blocks downloading the file > 5
mb
for example..
ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/9/en/os/i386/RedHat/RPMS/anaconda-imag
es-9.0-3.noarch.rpm

but when i open the ftp site and say "copy to folder" for the file and try
storing it in my pc, squid does not stop it...

for example

open ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/9/en/os/i386/RedHat/RPMS and try
copying the anaconda file, squid does not stop

any pointers on how to tackle this and block that also ?

thanks in advance.

Ys thts pssble. You can 'and' different ACLs in the squid.conf:

acl user-raja username raja
acl rajas-pc src 10.4.2.191
http_access allow user-raja rajas-pc
http_access deny all

More information on how ACLs look like can be found in the dox.

Have you enabled any HTTP anonymisation features in Squid?
(header_access in Squid-2.5).

2003-03-27 Thread Raja R
Yes, it works fine when I do not use squid and am behind the same NAT
gateway. Ok, that indicates that NAT gateway is not blocking anything. Right
?
cache.log does not say anything ab't the hotmail requests. I am attaching
the access log for hotmail requests . squid does not seem to be denying
anything, but the page does not load, nor does it give any error . IT says
"DONE" with no display. It always comes to
http://login.passport.net/uilogin.srf?id=2 and gets DONE there .
Pls. check and give hints to solve the problem. I am despo.

Does it work if you do not use Squid, still behind the same NAT
gateway?

What does Squid access.log and cache.log say about the requests when
it fails?

may be the following info. help. (from squid FAQ)

11.16 ``Hot Mail'' complains about: Intrusion Logged. Access denied.
``Hot Mail'' is proxy-unfriendly and requires all requests to come from
the same IP address. You can fix this by adding to your squid.conf:

hierarchy_stoplist hotmail.com

RE: [squid-users] hotmail problem

2003-03-26 Thread Raja R
No, I am not using transparent proxy. using squid on linux . have tried with
different browsers (ie, netscape), clearing cache, clearing local cache,
etc, but no luck.

BUT SOME interesting observation :

Hotmail works when I route Squid proxy thru ISDN (dial-up) line but does not
work when it is behind a Firewall with static NAT. Do I need to allow some
specific ports from outside to the proxy when behind a firewall for HOTMAIL
?
But the problem has nothing to do with squid version, b'coz I faced a
similar problem on squid-2.3 also.
Pls. suggest .

Raja.

I have no problem at all, using hotmail thru 2.5Stable1 and
2.5Stable2.

On what OS are you using squid (version etc) ?

Are you using transp. proxying ?

Verify problem, preferrably with different browsers :

   Mozilla - Netscape - IE (e.g.).

To exclude that in the problem analysis path, you are not confronted
  with a browser issue.

[squid-users] hotmail problem

2003-03-23 Thread Raja R
HI All,
Is anybody facing any problem with hotmail since last 10 days behind squid
proxy ? I am facing a typical problem only behind a squid proxy. When I type
in www.hotmail.com, it goes finally to
http://login.passport.net/uilogin.srf?id=2 and the page says DONE there. No
page is displayed. Does anybody have a similar problem ? I am facing it only
since last 10 days. Before it was fine. So just wondering if some changes
have happened on hotmail during last few days ? What do I need to do on
squid to make it work ?
Pls. help.

regards,
Raja.

Thanks Henrik , I got it clear now. But what, if I have to say "my cache
should not have pages older than 10 days" ?
reference_age parameter in squid-2.3 was very handy for this . Pls. suggest
an alternative for squid-2.5. OR can I try using this parameter in squid-2.5
as well ? will it misbehave ?

The default cache replacement policy if you have not specified one is
lru.

Squid automatically maintains the cache within the specified size,
throwing old stuff away to make room for new.

RE: [squid-users] reference_age parameter

2003-03-20 Thread Raja R
Hi Henrik,

I have 4 cache_dir like this:

/A 1600 8 256 (3 GB disk)
/B 1600 8 256 (3 GB disk)
/C 1200 8 256 (2 GB disk)
/D 1200 8 256 (2 GB disk)

I want cache pages not to be older than 15 days in my cache. Also by
mentioning 1.6 GB out of 3 GB , I am having control on cache dir max size,
but what will happen if it reaches 1.6 GB . What will it start flushing out
then ? Will it use any policy by default ? I have not enabled any
cache_relacement Policy like lru , etc ?

Not sure if there is a equivalent parameter, but you can get close to
the same effect by tuning your cache size.

[squid-users] squid 2.5 stable 2

2003-03-19 Thread Raja R
Hi ,
I recently upgraded from squid 2.3 to squid 2.5 stable 1. Now stable 2 is
released on Mar 17th . I see authentication will work in access directives
in squid 2.5 stable 2,
like allow 10 MB download size to User A and say 50 MB size to User B ,
which is possible in squid-2.5 stable 1 using IPs only. AM I right ?
Also if I want to upgrade immd. from squid -2.5 stable 1 to stable 2
version, what is the easiest way ? Is it worth upgrading ?
Also can I use the same cache which was built by squid 2.5 stable 1 version
for stable2 version ?

Regards,
Raja.

I have tried reinstallation multiple times., but still the same. Only when I
configure for proxy does the browser crash, otherwise it is ok.
Also this is happening with netscape 4.7 only not with later versions like

Recently I upgraded squid from 2.3 to 2.5 stable 1. After that only, the
problem started.
With squid 2.3, netscape 4.7 was also working fine.

Pls. help. it is urgent.

If you Netscape browser crashes when having a proxy configured then your
Netscape browser is broken.

Try reinstalling the browser.

Why are you using MAC based ACLs? MAC based acls are technically NOT
more secure than IP based ACLs, only more complex to define as each MAC
address is 12 hex numbers..

200 MAC addresses is not very many for Squid to manage. To ease
management I would recommend putting them in a separate file and include
this from squid.conf if you have not already done so.

Why are you using urlpath_regex? urlpath_regex only looks into the
