[squid-users] Squid 2.7.x No Transparent Smartphones issues with youtube?

2013-06-28 Thread Beto Moreno
Hi people.

 I setup squid 2.7.x

My LAN works without issue, now I setup my WiFi network to test some
smartphones example Atrix 2.

Those devices doesn't have the option to auto discover proxy
settings, I setup manually done.

I could browse Internet, but there is something that took my
attention, I could watch any video in youtube.

I can search videos and that stuff but once I click to watch any of
them it just show me loading...

squid logs won't show any DENIED I still don't setup any ACL for this.

Any comment about your experience with smartphones?

 My Setup is not Transparent-Proxy.

 Thanks.

Is there any particular reason you are using squid2.7?

No offense meant, but you might consider upgrading to a newer version.

This is a test enviroment under pfsense, is all.
I have the option to move to squid 3.x I can.
Now related to smartphone, 3.x fix this came of issues?

Running Squid under pfsense?

Pardon me if someone finds what I am about to say offensive,

But in my opinion, pfsense is a childs toy, and no sane man would put it
into production in a serious environment,

More specifically, in regards to squid proxy, I find that it is absurd the
way they bury the squid.conf in some obscure
xml scheme, as I have placed multiple inquiries to the pfsense community
over this issue, the response I got...

Was essentially that they are purposely making direct editing of
configuration file difficult to do for the end users.

I was offended by this, as I find their user interface for squid3 lacking in
configuration directives, limiting the users ability
to truly have the freedom to configure the squid proxy under pfsense in any
sensible manner.

But then again, that is just my opinion, and maybe I am wrong, but thats how
I see it.

Hopefully some serious squid enthusiasts/experts can assist the pfsense
developerment team in developing a better interface for squid proxy under
pfsense, or even simply allow an option in the pfsense web gui for direct
editing of the configuration file for advanced or custom tailored options.

Once again, I apologize if voicing my opinion on this matter if it was less
than productive.

Hi Ben.
I have been using pfsense for more than 4 years without issue, I
understand and accept your opinion.
I have running squid with pfsense and centos to, love it.
U point something interes about some advanced GUI to edit squid
under pfsense, I'm with u, this is complex because but not impossible,
squid have so much features that we I used I think 20% of features, is
a huge program.
But in my case, I edit squid under pfsense manually this way I have
a better control on what I'm doing, I just the GUI to setup the basic
settings and them boom, manually.
Now returning to the problem, what can cause my smartphone to not
display youtube video, but let me browse and search?
  Thanks Ben.

This might sound silly, but does your phone support flash?

Have you tried http://www.youtube.com/html5

Might be able to get them to load in html5 if your phone doesnt support
flash.

Also, might I ask how you managed to edit the squid.conf in pfsense?

Where is it located in pfsense?

Ben, remember that pfsense is based on freeBSD, every package u
install goes to /usr/loca/etc/
There u find squid folder settings.
Yes support flash, I have a hotspot to and there youtube works without issue.
I will try that link u point me once I arrive at home.

What do you mean by have a hotspot to?
Do you have a captive portal where the phones work? and manually
configured they do not?

I know that a lot of smartphones do not support proxies very well.
Android on recently added proper proxy detection and most apps do not
use the proxy settings regardless of manual configuration. Flash is on
app which requires each scriptlet to have explicit proxy support or it
does not work, it does not gateway requests to a proxy even if the flash
interpreter is aware of one being needed.

Yes, before I test in my hotspot and works.

But u have told a lot things that explain a lot things, lack of
support by smartphones.
I can surf, but youtube won't work, I'm fitting right now :-).
