Yes, I see your point. Kind of an incompatibility between the two licenses ;-) Thanks for your help, Christoph On 07/17/2010 11:09 PM, Henrik Nordström wrote: ons 2010-07-14 klockan 10:50 +0200 skrev Christoph Goeldi: I'm still interested in Smartfilter for newer Squid versions (v3.0 and v3.1). I have just sent another ping, but with all the corporate changes, it may take some time to find the person in charge again. I will post when/if there is any final outcome. Please consider pushing the issue with McAfee from your end. As a SmartFilter fan and customer, you may be more effective in triggering the decision to port the code to eCAP. And feel free to point the McAfee folks to me if they need help with eCAP in general or with porting their code to eCAP in particular. Hi Alex On the 15th April 2008 you wrote that you've been in contact with Secure Computing (today McAfee): > FYI: We have started talking to Secure Computing regarding Squid3 > compatibility of the SmartFilter plugin. I will keep you updated. Would you mind sharing the outcome of your conversation with Secure Computing? I'm still interested in Smartfilter for newer Squid versions (v3.0 and v3.1). It's the best URL filter I know, or do you know any better software which also would work with Squid? You can download it for free from SecureComputing's website and have look. Sorry I cant be more helpful but I'm not a developer. Smartfilter 4.2.1 works with squid 2.6-17. http://www.securecomputing.com/index.cfm?skey=1326 FYI: We have started talking to Secure Computing regarding Squid3 compatibility of the SmartFilter plugin. I will keep you updated. Thank you, Alex.

Its not doing any internal content redirection. Would anyone like me to take a look at how difficult it'd be to get this implemented as an external Squid helper so it works for both Squid-2 and Squid-3 ? Hm, I haven't looked at the patchset yet - I assume its in the 53 meg download? Much like any other submission, it might need some tidying up to be more suitable; I'm reasonably surprised they've not approached anyone about trying to include this work into the mainline Squid tree (to make their lives easier!) in the past. I doubt their existing patches should be included in Squid sources because they are relatively large and very SmartFilter-specific. It would be rather unfair to ask Squid developers to maintain that code, and there are better alternatives to simply dumping parts of custom filters into Squid (e.g., ICAP and eCAP). Alex.

However, I need more information: - What exactly is the Secure Computing plugin that supports Squid2 and does not support Squid3? Does it have a name and a version number? - What API/protocol does that plugin use to integrate with Squid2? - Does anybody know why the plugin does not work with Squid3? Google shows a few suspects, but I want to be as precise as possible when talking to Secure Computing folks, and I do not have first-hand knowledge of this plugin and its problems. Thank you, Alex.
