David,

I used a custom Cheddar boiler commissioned by Mike Zemek for a Shay project
that didn't work out. It is smaller in diameter than the Pippit boiler and will
produce enough steam for the Graham while taking water from an engine driven
feed pump, but only just. Mike told me that Cheddar were concerned that this
boiler would be too small for the Graham, well it does work but everything needs
to be just right. The external diamter is 2 1/4".

The larger Pippit boiler feeds the Graham just fine. It is 2 3/4" in diamter and
has a bigger center flue. But water capacity is not large and so run times will
be limited by water. Both boilers have a bushing for a check valve so you could
incorporate an engine driven pump, just about mandatory on the small custom
boiler, or a hand pump.

You should be able to get boilers in the standard Cheddar range from Sulphur
Springs.

Cheers

Keith

Cheddar will build a boiler to your specs. Price? Check their site as shown

Steve,
Regarding the boiler: One could convert the boiler to use gas to fire it.
You can also cut a hole in the deck, drop the boiler down, and then your jet
and the burner will be below deck, which eliminates your height problem.
The Graham engine is a "hoss". I just built a single cylinder for my little
project and it has plenty of power. I can't say enough good things about
Gail Graham either. He will definitely stand behind his product. Good
luck.

Thanks Steve & Keith for the comments about the PM Research boiler. Keith,
if I may ask: what I'm considering isn't too different from the beautiful
Goldbug you're showing on your site now, except that the GAGE would go
cross-wise rather than lengthwise on the chassis on standard-gauge track.
Did you use a stock boiler on Goldbug? Is it adequate steamwise? I have
wondered whether a Cheddar boiler would work, but I can't find them listed
as available separately nor have I been able to find their exterior
dimensions. David
