Walt,

Both preserved narrow gauge lines have been shut down by the forest service.
Although there are no fires in the vicinity of Albuquerque, the air has been
thick with smoke the last week, today worse than ever. The winds have subsided
somewhat, but they still blow very hard for at least an hour a day, which of
course makes things much worse for the firefighters.

The Albuquerque paper ran an editorial cartoon last week showing Smoky the Bear
holding a flamethrower and cheerfully reporting "Don't worry -- it's just a
controlled burn." In the background, a loco lettered Cumbres & Toltec and the
Chama station are burnt to a crisp. It's likely that a down season will kill
the railroad, and with it Chama and Antonito.

regards,

Operations to Silverton have been suspended. The train is going as far as
Hermosa.

To their credit, management tried to keep things going - brought in a
diseasel and a tank car - started carrying water tanks and hoses in the box
car - installed finer mesh in the spark arrestors. Management pulled the
plug, though, when they came down from Silverton on the speeder following
one of the trains and saw just how devistating the Missionary Ridge fire
is. No sense in adding to the workload of the firefighters. (Before
restricting operations they did start one fire big enough to divert a
chopper and a crew ... not a big fire, just an acre ... just enough to
scare some folks.)

If you want to keep track of what is going on, the Durango Herald is
providing outstanding coverage on their web site .

Man is not going to put this fire out. Pray for rain!

still there ... thanks for asking)

According to the fine folks over at MLS it has not yet affected the
Durango. The Cumbres and Toltec is being forced to stop opperations
though for fear of starting further fires. I believe the Durango is being
similarly afflicted.
