Arthur,

Hey me man, I was kiddin' on the complaints! I'd be happy to send you a
recent copy and an older one just to show you how the N/L has developed.

Shall I send it to your address as listed in the Diamondhead roster?

Geoff.

me man,

Tell me where to send what for one issue. I want to see what it's all about
for the previous stated reason. No complaints on this end.

Aster Mikado - Ceramic Burners

2002-08-29 Thread Don Plasterer

I'm about to attempt my first set of ceramic burners having just secured a
fire brick. The burners will be for my Aster Mikado.

Has anyone on the list made ceramic burners for the Mikado? I was planning
on following a design I saw in Steam in the Garden with the burner having a
rounded top and a narrow bottom. Do I need to make all three wicks for the
burner or will two be enough? How do you adjust the amount of flame you get
- cut down on the size of the burner head or the size of the bottom to cut
down on the alcohol consumption?

All advice is welcome.

Don

G1MRA believes in quality of their publication

2002-08-29 Thread Gary

Good work Geoff!
I figured they might! After all a quality publication might just trust that
good PR results in membership more often than poor PR. Shows what a good
group they are.

I actually placed a tunnel stone portal facing on my tunnel today! Finally
making a bit of progress between work demands.

Thank you for the offer and I accept. In any event if there is a charge
please advise me and I will return you a dollar check.
I have been in contact with Jim in the States and I guess I have been doing
duplicate requests between you two.

In any event, thank you for doing what you are for me. And I love your

Dear Jim,

Sometimes I get things mixed up and sometimes I don't pay attention and
sometimes---. I have been in contact with Geoff about the same
publication that I have been requesting from you. Duplication of efforts
and me causing double problems. That wasn't my intention.

Thank you,
Arthur

Wheels

2002-08-29 Thread Clark Lord

Folks: Last week Sharon Ricketts (of PSGRS) asked me about which wheels she
should use on her freight train she's assembling. I explained the
differences in sizes of wheels and that I thought she should use Gary
Raymond's 133 wheels as they are the correct size for 1:32 pre 1960 freight
cars.

Well a couple of days ago she told me that Ted Sharpe (Sunset Valley
Railroad) sold Sierra Valley wheels and they represented a 26 wheel in
1:24. She wanted to know if those would do.

Since I only use Gary Raymond wheels I called Gary Watkins (Sierra Valley)
and ordered two sets of wheels. I got the #2 size 1:24 in plain steel and
nickel plated. Gary and I had a nice talk and he said that Dan Pantages
only used the Sierra Valley #2 wheel. Now my curiosity is up.

They came today (thanks for the speedy service Gary) and I could make some
side by side comparisons. Both wheels I examined are nickel plated steel
and double insulated.

Here they are:

Gary Raymond 133 Sierra Valley #2
Wheel diameter 1.031 1.083
 correct for 33 in 1:32correct for 26 in 1:24
Axle center diam.2185 .2185
Back to Back 40.34mm40.27mm
Wheel width .207 .250
Flange height .144 .144
Overall length 2.728 2.735
Axle end diam .118 .121

Subjective items:
The finish (smoothness) of the Gary Raymond wheel was better than the Sierra
Valley wheel. You could see tool marks on the tread of the Sierra Valley
wheel where none were visible on the Gary Raymond wheel.

Rolling test: While not scientific, I rolled these wheels on my outdoor
track and the Gary Raymond wheel went further by 25-30% every time.

Wheel profile: I like the Sierra Valley profile better. It looks more
prototypical. The Gary Raymond profile has a large radius fillet between
the tread and flange. I'm sure that's why the Gary Raymond wheel rolls
further.

Size: The diameters are different but are correct for the scale they
represent. Using the stand off scale rule of 10 feet you can't tell the
difference. Only when you hold them in your hand and use a digital caliper
can you tell that the Sierra Valley wheel is almost a 1/16 inch bigger.

Wheel width: The Sierra Valley wheel tread is .043 wider than the Gary
Raymond. When I rolled each wheel set through a Sunset Valley #10 turnout
there was a noticeable wheel drop at the frog with the Gary Raymond wheel
where there was none with the Sierra Valley wheel. The extra wheel tread
width on the Sierra Valley wheel made the difference.

Price:Gary Raymond Sierra Valley
Unplated steel (4 axles) $11.80 $13.00
Nickel plated (4 axles) $15.80 $19.20

Now I realize that discounts are available with large wheel orders but when
you are re-wheeling lots of box cars the price difference noted can add up
quickly. Take say 25 cars using the plated wheels it will cost $480.00 for
the Sierra Valley vs $395.00 for the Gary Raymond. A savings of $85.00.

So for now I will continue to use the Gary Raymond wheels as they are the
correct size for 1:32 scale equipment and I have 24 sets in stock at the
moment.

As for Sharon Ricketts question of which to use. Go with the flow Sharon.
Ted sells Sierra Valley wheels and offers a PSGRS discount.

The above review is my personal opinion. Comments are welcome.

Clark
