RE: Strange Mogul

2003-06-06 Thread Bob Root

Having the last drivers set back under the cab is not too unusual. It is
done on both moguls and ten wheelers. I believe it was done for better
balance and so as not to have to use a trailing truck. Bob Root

Accucraft is showing a very strange looking live steam 2-6-0 on its
website under "news". It looks like they took a C-16 and removed the
3rd axle and drivers.

RE: Air Supply (not the band)

2003-04-02 Thread Bob Root
If you use an air supply, what happens to the steam oil that is suppose to
get to the cylinders? There is no steam to condense to displace the oil,
wouldn't this mean that the cylinders are running without any lub. Bob

Vance,

You are correct! I forgot cost and it does matter. I do not want to spend
a fortune.

Chuck, the quiet ones are gonna cost you a LOT. But, cost wasn't in
your list of parameters, so I guess that's no problem. What you want
is a two-stage, oil bath compressor. The ones you buy down at the
hardware store won't cut it -- you'll probably have to go to an industrial
supply.

RE: Back to O rings

2003-03-13 Thread Bob Root
To Bob

Thanks for answering my question on using goodall valves for feeding
boilers. I hadn't heard about them having to be above the high water mark.
Do you know the reason why? I figured the pressure to hold them closed
would be the same in or out of water as the water is under the same
pressure. Bob

Bob,
I have used goodall type valves for feeding boilers. I have made my own
with a union fitting instead the usual fill hole. They work fine, but have
to be above your high water line to work.

I am installing a water pump to add water to my engine while under steam.
Rather than using a regular check valve, is there any reason I couldn't use
a goodall valve instead. Has amyone tried this? Bob

Thanks for pointing that out Bob! Last I looked into this mallet it was
built up only. Many recommended I not buy this one as first loco. In my
view, since I have repaired three live steam locos for friends, I probably
can buy a loco like this as a second loco. Lorenz Schug is assembling the
Aster Alisan Shay for me. He is assembling your mallet and selling other
guage one trains. Busy fellow. I will have the "train money" soon to buy the
kit for this mallet.
The Regner mallet not only looks great, but it has a live steam hose for
cleaning off the loco! That is something unique, right?

If you will go to regners site you will find he does offer the mallet as a
kit. I have one being built by Lorenz Schug for me. I hoped that it would
be ready for Diamondhead, but having trouble getting everything I wanted.
Mr Regner is in the hospital at the present. The mallet is a very limited
kit, if you want one order now. I have found Mr Schug very nice to do
business with.

I have not built one. They appear to be kits like an Aster, just assemble.
Lorenz Schug owns a G train shop http://www.mbv-schug.com in Western
Germany near Luxumberg. He sells, services, repairs steam and has plenty of
experience with Regner. I expect he is the most knowledgeable person other
than the manufacturer of Regner http://www.regner-dampftechnik.de/ .
Personally I wish Regner offered their nifty small mallet as a kit.

Gary - Waiting for arrival of an Aster Alisan Shay from Herr Schug

Has anyone built a Regner kit? What sort of skillset is required to
successfully complete one? The claim made by Regner is that no machining is
required. Is it truly screwdriver assembly?

Where have all the live steamers gone?.
Have not seen much e mail action in last few weeks.
Is everyone going diesel-electric?.
Or everyone out steaming and no problems?.
