Father's Day @ Roaring Camp
How many of the BAGRS Live Steamers are coming to Roaring Camp this weekend? I will be there on Sunday with my live steamer and would be good to meet some of you from this list. I know I have not been active lately, but still read every message. Steam UP! Jeff Badger Soquel Pacific Coast Ry.

In a message dated 10/29/99 5:24:57 PM Pacific Daylight Time, << I'm seriously considering a Roudhouse William with RC >> I have a Roundhouse Billy, and it is a great locomotive! The ease of operation and the R/C gives it superior control over many of the other locomotives out on the market today I feel. I recently gave a display at an elementary school in town, and had 7 cars along with my Frank S live steamer. Well I couldn't get steam up at all on the Frank S due to the burner fouling out. Fortunatly I brought the Billy and within 5 minutes had steam up(used warm water) and it pulled all 7 cars with no problem and a nice little bark to boot. By adjusting the trim on the transmiter, I was able to hook up the right combination of throttle and reverse to actually set the transmitter aside and continue talking to the students while Billy continue for the next 15 minutes or so! I would suggest one if you are a beginner! hey you wanna buy mine? Jeff Badger Big Trees Flume & Lumber Co.
Re: more Ruby (was Welcome...)
Vance and other interested parties, here is what I am using for R/C of the Ruby, and by all accounts it will work. Futaba Attack T2DR Transmitter (open up the back and remove the return spring on the channel 2 stick). Novack NER-2S mini 2 channel reciever (.75"X1.5"X1.25") be sure to insulate the back when placing it in the tank. I am using a 1/8" thick composite insulation similar to live steam boiler wrapping. HiTec HS-80 micro servo (36.4 oz. torque) Panasonic Lithium 6 volt battery (solder on Futaba "J" type lead w/ on-off switch) Now for what has happend to this point... Remove reverse (Johnson Bar) control from floor, make sure to leave the rod from the cylinders in place. Use the small 4 way servo wing and remove 3 of the leads. Drill the top hole to 3/32. Mount the servo on its side to the floor of the cab and insert the cylinder rod into the servo wing. Make sure the leads for the servo are facing towards the front of the engine. Plug the leads from the battery and servo into the reciever and place into the engineer's side tank. Make sure the on/off switch is near the opening. I found that by running the leads from the servo near the cylinder rod. The cab opening will be sufficient enough to clear all wires without binding or pinching. Tomorrow night I will be doing a test steaming to check the "throw" of the linkage. By removing the return spring in the transmitter, this allows for minute movement in the linkage so the Ruby will have full hookup in forward or reverse and possibly some cutoff. More news at 5... Re: Busy week topped by Ruby arrival
HAAAYYY another Rubyite has come into the ranks! Congratulations from Ruby #019. I am so pleased also that the mini servo I have ordered for mine came in yesterday also and am now ready to R/C her. For those of you interested in the R/C project I will be shooting digital pics and posting them soon. The items I am using are: Futaba Attack 2 channel T/x Novak mini reciever w/ 6 volt lithium battery Hitec 31080 micro servo (rated at a higher torque than the Futaba 3101 and $30 less in cost. Dimensions are 1.1" X .05" X 1.1" Also for those of you interested... how about a whistle for the Ruby? I have a whistle from an old Mamod steam traction engine that will thread into one of the taps on Ruby's turret. H I may need another servo for this one! Happy Steamy Weekend to all! Re: Propane/Butane (was Re: Tips page)
Hi all, since we are on the subject of fuels here is my take... Having used straight Butane in my Frank S for the first 6 months, I have found it to be hard to fire due to atmospheric conditions. Even when the tank is with water, it will start freezing up and fouling the jet. On a warm day it works great and I can get and have gotten up to 35 min. on a steam up. I have been using Gasz and Primus mixes and find them more stable when cooler weather prevails. I have fired up the Ruby 5 times with the mix and it works great. Oh by the way, am just finishing up putting R/C in the Ruby. That will make a big difference for controling, and so simple too. Anyway I haven't had any problems with these 2 locos on the mixed gas and just got a Roundhouse "Billy" that I will the mix in also. Besides, Butane is getting harder to find and expensive. There is an article in the recent SitG on Page 36 for building Propane fuel tanks for our steamers and some fuel spec's to go with. Happy Steaming Jeff Badger Big Trees Flume & Lumber Co.

Re: Frank S scale?
And speaking of Frank S, I just finished 6 days of running it every other hour on the hour at the Santa Cruz County Fair on the "G" scale layout that is a scaled down version of Roaring Camp & Big Trees N.G. complete with a corkscrew trestle and 9% grades. It looked great toting LGB Disconnects and a bashed eight wheeled Bachmann Bobber Caboose! It is one of the best running lokies in my collection. The Ruby steams well but is very rigid and won't take uneven track well. Also without Remote Control makes it hard to chase around a complex track plan. Yesterday just got my Roundhouse Billy in and will see what happens next! Jeff Badger Big Trees Flume & Lumber Co.
