Hi Salty;

Yes. We have a large parking area and an area set aside for campers/
trailers. A lot of the large scale do just that. We don't have any pads or
hookup facilities, but essential bathroom facilities are available.

Hope you can make it. Rosey is a beauty and we'd be proud to have
you at PLS.

Chuck and others:

In turn; No running the different gauges is not a problem. The Gauge 1
setup is completely separate from the larger gauges.
No. PLS on meet days is like a giant circus. There is so
much going on that even if you have to wait a while to run, you can watch
and the kids, if you have any, can ride behind the large scale stuff. So can
you. We have electricity at trackside and have rigged extra portable lights
for night running. The meet gets going unoffically Friday and goes through
Saturday and Sunday. We have a large sit down meal that you order tickets
for Saturday evening across the street at the Fire Company. PLS is not only
a wonderful place to run trains, it's also a park where people come to
picnic and relax in the well maintained grassy areas.

There are no hotels/motels within walking distance of PLS. Since I
live about 40 miles from there, I don't know the best most convenient places
to stay. I'll have to check on that and get some feedback on about how many
want to come. Then we can set a block of rooms aside.

All are welcome to come on either of meet days.

another point: an outdoor steamup is always very risky due to inclement

A little better ventilation at DH wouldn't hurt, but we didn't get

Phil,

I thought of Labor Day, but was thinking that it might be too much with the
Fall meet going on. 75 to 100 possible attendees to that meet is a lot.
Would the simultaneous running of the different gauges be a problem? Would
one detract from the other? On the flip side, Labor Day would give people
Monday for travel. I am up for it and will even help coordinate.

O.K. This may get to be a little long winded. Hopefully, it will clear the
air a bit.

First off , the PA. Live Steamers is a multi-gauge club that sits on
a wonderful 5 acre site near Philadelphia,PA. The club has been in existence
since 1946. Policy at PLS has always been that the club is always available
to any member on non-work days to run on. They do not (to my knowledge) set
a exclusive time where only one group can run. The people at PLS who are the
heart and soul of Gauge1 are the Quirk brothers. Neither Paul or Harry (at
this time) are into computers. Setting a date that would conflict with
existing steam-ups would NOT be something that would happen. Spring Time in
PA. can be a royal pain anyway for 2 reasons. The weather is always iffy
then and during the Spring meet, hotels are very-very difficult to get
because of all the colleges in the area holding graduation exercises. The
fall meet is already in place and non-members are welcome then. It's always
Labor day weekend. Mike Moore has a brand new portable layout that he built
last year and he has brought it to PLS on the Meet days. If this would suit
people, let me know and I'll pass the word along to the Quirks and the board
of directors.

If you want to see what PLS is all about check this site.

I don't think the 2001 schedule is up yet.

While I personally do not expect to be able to attend
either the proposed PA or St Louis steam-ups because
of work commitments, I strongly support Dave's
suggestion. Live stearmers are still a small group in
the US, as compared to the HO or even garden
railroaders. Let's not fragment our efforts to enjoy
time together burning fingers. Tom's group did their
homework and while the fall does have holidays their
is an opportunity available and the east coast in the
fall is typically very comfortable temperature wise
and also attractive with fall leaves. Both could be a
draw.

Northeast Steam-up

2001-01-19 Thread Dr. Robert M. Blackson

The Pennsylvania Live Steamers sponsors two steam-ups each year, one over
the Memorial Day weekend and the other over the Labor Day weekend starting
on Friday around noon and continuing into Sunday. There are two permanent
tracks, featured in photos in back issues of SitG, and there is usually also
at least one portable track. Mike Moore had his portable track there last
Labor Day, and at one of the previous meets there was also a portable Gauge
O track. The PLS railroad is located at Rahns, Pa., which is on Route 29
near Norristown and Collegeville. These two meets are open to owners of
live steam locos from Gauge O to the ride-on size locos and are advertised
in both SitG and Live Steam. Food is served on or near the property, and
there are numerous motels in the area as well as limited space for campers
and tents on the property as well as "job Johnnies" or "porta pots" for the
meet, but, alas, no Budweiser Girls.

Hey, you guys, those back-yard and club steamups can turn into "real
events", but start small. The Sidestreet Bannerworks Steamup (the 20th was
last fall) had about six people the first year, and soon grew into what we now
know as the National Garden Railway convention. Likewise, BAGRS running
days have spawned a steamup in Calif., the Powderpuff Steamup and other
backyard events have spawned the Midwest Steamup. Just put a notice in
Steam in the Garden and Small Scale Steam and see who appears.
Probably not anyone from a thousand miles away -- the first couple of years.
But if the location and timing are right, you could end up with a hotel
convention and a hell of a good time.

Northeast Steam-up

2001-01-18 Thread Kevin Strong

We've thought about doing something up this end for a while.
Unfortunately, we don't exactly have a plethora of portable tracks up
this end. Tom Bowdler is working on a small one with one loop of track,
but that's hardly enough for a steam-up. Peter Davis hosts a G1MRA
get-together at his track once a summer, and it's well attended. (He
even invites us heathen 1:20ers, although the clearances on the curves
get tight...) I would think that if we were to have one in the
northeast, the logical place to have it would be somewhere in western
NY, as that would tend to attract a good number of steamers from the
Toronto area.

How many of us are there in the northeast? If we were to have a weekend
steam-up, would you join us? (Not a full-blown "in a hotel" deal, just a
few loops of track, perhaps at a private railroad.) I'm always looking
for an excuse to boil water. Our summers are fairly short up here, but
we boast really nice plumes the other 363 days of the year.

Something to think about as the "warm" weather approaches.

Later,

K
