Hallo Hannes,

As you can see, XEP-0080 was designed back in 2003-2004. At that time we
looked at some of the other efforts in this space, but they seemed quite
heavy for our needs. Naturally it is quite straightforward to translate
from one format to another on the server/gateway side. I'd be happy to
add translations for GML, too (even PIDF-LO uses a subset of GML, if I
recall correctly). The same goes for the civic location standards, which
are not designed for lightweight communication but instead can describe
any possible address in the world and can get quite complicated. We are
always interested in alignment, but that doesn't always need to occur
via direct use of heavyweight standards over XMPP.

Or so it seems to me. :)

It would have been good to align this work with the other location based 
activities that are going on.

GML seems to be the main standard in this field.
For civic location there are also standards to look at.

Any interest in alignment?

Currently, XEP-0080 defines the accuracy of GPS readings in minutes of
arc (via the  element). Joe Hildebrand and I talked about this
recently and decided that it would be preferable to define accuracy in
meters, as is done in IMPS (Wireless Village) and other protocols.
Therefore we propose to deprecate the  element and define a new
 element.
