ActionErrors
Hi. I'm not sure that I've done this the right way, but we'll all have to learn some day. We're using struts to help us in building a web-klient accessing a db through EJB on weblogic6.0. The jsp-pages I'm making has a lot of different information, which are coming from different enterprise beans. These beans are initiated in the Action/perform method. And here is the problem: If I generate an error in the validate method, the flow is directed to the page in the input attribute in the xml-file. This page is a jsp-page, and if you start a jsp-page directly, the perform method is not executed. The perform is only executed if you access the page through the .do. So when the system tries to show the jsp-page, the information from the different beans is not available, due to the perform method not beeing executed. How should I do this? Is it possible to initiate the enterprise beans in some other methods than the perform? Thanks -KHL

Hi all im back , I have got a response from ms-dos prompt , albiet when i enter C:\ant\bin\ant.bat -find i recieve a searching for a build.xml ... could not locate a build file but the fact of the matter is that i have downloaded a sample and located it within the ant\bin dir .Nevertheless it still can't find it. Re: Looking for Statistics
Yes, it's important to point out all the advantages of using a MVC Framework like Struts to do a fair comparision. Even though the framework is not actually designed to minimize coding or promote rapid development, I think if you put all the real-life requirements on the table, we can stack up quite well. For example, the simple application I through together last night, besides capturing and returning input, fills these requirements: 1. Validates input as to type (Integer, Date, Phone, ZIP, and Email). 2. Provides Javascript and server-side validations from the same configuration file (logic and messages). 3. Can be Internationalized by simply adding language resources. 4. Returns the original input in the event of error. 5. Will return muliple errors in the same request/response. 6. Detects and handles cancel event. 7. Can redirect flow in the case of data access errors, or return to the same page with input intact. 8. Can share data-access logic with applications in other environments. Counting semi-colons: Access.java - 28 Form.java - 57 Counting .. / nodes: Struts-config.xml: 7 validator.xml: 20 So about a 100 lines for a full-featured data-entry skeleton, about 20% of which would be re-used on the next module. Of course, a practical metric would not only include what's needed for start-up code, but also what would be required to make substantial changes later -- as happens in actual practice. That's the real thrust of MVC frameworks: what happens ~after~ you ship? Getting the product out the door is only the tip of the iceberg. The smart money knows that the real cost of ownership is in maintaining and extending applications over the long term. Say, Malcom, we've started work on a brochure that might make good use of your text. May we appropriate it? -- Ted Husted, Husted dot Com, Fairport NY USA. -- Custom Software ~ Technical Services. -- Tel 716 737-3463. -- http://www.husted.com/about/struts/ malcolm davis wrote: Hello Christine, I don't have any stats. Sorry. :( The following was from a presentation I had to do on justifying converting an application to Struts. Hope it helps. 1. UI - Presently, minor changes in code ripples through the large sections of the application. Moving a single field from one HTML page to another might require touching multiple java classes instead of just a simple change of two JSP files. [Struts limits ripple affect] 2. Layering of the application - The present design has a high degree of coupling between layers. This makes it difficult to make changes with affecting the major parts, or the entire application. [Every module should communicate with as few others as possible. - Myers ] 3. Interface development and role development - Changes in the presentation layer requires change in the business code. The present design requires that the JSP contain Java code. In addition to code, the UI developer requires intimate knowledge of the internal workings of the application; a human interface person cannot do UI development. [Struts, with the help of JSP Tags abstracts away the daily involvement of Java developers in the UI] 4. Regression Testing - There is no way to build unit test around the business logic because it is tightly integrated with the UI code. [Struts reaffirms the need to build business logic by forcing a layer with Action] 5. Flow - Understanding the flow of the application requires walking the code. There is not a central location for the logic flow of the application. [Struts, with the help of the Controller, allows a developer to see the flow of the application. This is extremely import in large applications] 6. Common Error - There is not a common way of handling or displaying multiple errors to the user. [Struts provides a common mechanism for handling errors] It's hard to say if Struts is the solution for you with out knowing the entire problem space. I'm interested in any options. Malcolm
Re: ActionErrors
You could activate directly the Action/perform (i.e. your_action.do instead of your_page.jsp), after that, the perform method will get information from your beans, put them into your action_form class, which extends from the class ActionForm of struts, and then forward to the JSP page (your_page.jsp) hope it helps Quan - Original Message - From: Langøren, Knut Harald [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'Struts-User (E-mail) [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, July 13, 2001 3:53 PM Subject: ActionErrors Hi. Bean property getting vanished from scope
Hello, I have a bean having array of objects. I am using that object for iterate tag. Its displaya the table correctly. But once I submit the tag and go to next page, I trying again to display the same thing, but it says no collection found. The scope I have given is session. Also I tried by removing set methid for the particular property thinking there might be problem in set method. But seems to be something different. Can anybody focus some light on this?? Thanks, Vaibhav
Nested classes
Hi all, I am using an ActionForm with a collection of Rows which should be editable. My ActionForm contains a property getRow(int i) which returns a bean with the row's properties. Everything work perfectly, when the class returned from getRow(int) is a standalone class. But as soon as I make this class a nested class of my ActionForm, struts complains, if cannot find property setters: This works: public class MyForm ... { public MyRow getRow(int i) { ...; } } public class MyRow { public setProperty(String value) { ...; } } This does not: (cannot find property setter for row[0].property) public class MyForm ... { public MyRow getRow(int i) { ...; } public static class MyRow { public setProperty(String value) { ...; } } I'd really like to use nested classes. Is there a way? -- gR
RE: ActionErrors
hi One way to populate a form before it is used (say you want to load user information for editing) is to create an action called preloadUserAction. In the config file create an action mapping such as actionpath=/edituser type=actionbeans.PreloadUserAction name=userForm scope=session input=/selfAdmin.jsp forward name=success path=/selfAdmin.jsp/ /action The userForm is passed into the preload action. This populates the form and then forwards onto the page that will use that form. RE: Ant problem - but getting closer any suggestions on snippet
You're almost there. What does the line in your build script say that looks like... project name=myproject default=build basedir=.. The basedir should be relative to the location from which you are typing the ant command, and generally speaking other paths in the build script are relative to the basedir. So line 19 of your file should be rewritten to be relative to C:\ant. Also, it probably makes more sense to store the buildfile with your source and execute ant from a source directory, e.g. ...\netbeans\Development\, which is convenient to do as %ANT_HOME%\bin is in your path. Ant is awfully cool. Have fun.
