As James co-author, let me speak to this.

To begin with - I'd like to say that all authors that have put together
books on Struts have put a lot of work into it and have all done well. I've
read most all the books that are currently available and have to honest -
they're all good! No bad words about any of them.

Certainly, as well, I'd feel better if someone on the list who has seen the
book stepped in to answer this. Better probably for everyone to get an
unbiased answer. Kind of hard for me, really, to be unbiased! :-

That being said, we did take specific steps to differentiate:

 - We include a CD-ROM with Struts, JDK 1.4, mysql, strutstestcase, the
struts console, Junit, ant, cactus, Axis, JBoss, etc so all code is
included for windows and Linux.
 - We have working sample code for almost every struts tag. It's designed
for cutting and pasting.
 - We provided working sample apps including code, build scripts and step
by step instructions for integration with JBoss for EJB's and Axis for Web
Services
 - We provided coverage of Ant build scripts, JUnit and Cactus testing with
struts test case.

That's enough I guess to just say that we worked hard to create a good,
usable book. We're currently working with a couple of developer sites to
arrange publication of more sample chapters. The people at SAMS are doing a
great job with the promotions.

And again, I've read Chuck's book and really liked it. While I haven't read
Ted, et al's book it looks great as well - and Ted has made such a unique
contribution to Struts that he's certainly earned a special place. (Ted's
publisher Manning has put out some great titles recently including Erik
Hatcher's Ant book).

If anyone has more specific questions I'd prefer to take them off list
unless the person believes their discussion is of value to the wider
audience of Struts users.

Thanks for asking!
Kevin

Unfortunately, an innordinately large percentage of development
time is spent with the tag library, as even a casual perusal
of this list reveals.

I think that's mostly about not understanding how to develop with
tags, especially in a Model 2 architecture. It's a very different
approach than developing an app with Model 1 and scriplets. Much
of the problem, I think, is that people try to put old wine into
new bottles.

I did some work in Cold Fusion before Struts, so the tag and tool
approaches seemed quite natural to me. I've also written
applications in so many environments now, that I've long started
to see the database as one thing and the presentation as another.
So Model 2 came naturally tool.

IMHO, what helps the most is drawing a firmer contrast between the
Struts Core and the rest of the presentation layer. The Struts
tags are one example of how to expose the Struts framework core to
the presentation page. Struts-el, stxx, the Velocity View tools,
and the (upcoming) struts-faces, are other ways of exposing the
core framework components to the presentation page.

Properly designed, you should be able to use your Struts
controller with any these presentation layers. Where I think
people run into problems is that they try to do controller things
in the presentation page and presentation things in the
controller.

Like Vic said, if you are having trouble doing some thing with
the tags, it's usually because you are doing too little with the
controller. In a MVC/Model 2 application, the presentation page
should be a glorified mail merge job. It shouldn't do anything
but output what the controller has given it to output.

In the future, there will be more Struts appplication using even
more presentation layers, the Struts tags, the EL tags, the JSF
tags, the Velocity View tools, XLST, Jelly, and whatever else we
think of next =:0)

But behind all this chrome, there can still be the same core
framework holding all the pieces together.

-Ted.

thanx for all the input guys, I reckon I will probably buy both. Neither of
the two books listed in my original email have been published yet, I was
just doing my homework so long. But I reckon both seem to be pretty good.
Well done to the brave authors!!! I WILL BUY

The Goodwill book clearly got rushed to market without adequate editorial
care. It claims to use 1.1 in the examples, but there are so many serious
inconsistencies between the text and examples that 1.1 must have been
 last-minute addition.

I saw this book in the UK at Digital Art Worlds 9th November 2002.
It was definitely rush released. It is was missing the state-of-the-art
no dyna beans, no sub application ( ie modules ). Not enough information
compared to what we could see from Chuck Cavaness as a TheServerSide.com
pre-release.

BTW: Is the Chuck's book release in the USA. I enquired in London at
the PCBookshop.co.uk and they saw December release, which is just as
well.
