RE: Struts in J2EE

2002-10-25 Thread Stephen . Thompson
It all depends upon your system structure.

If you are using an integrated jsp server (ie tomcat inside jboss) then you
can package struts inside you normal war file. This war file is packaged
with the ejb jar file inside your ear file. This can then be deployed as a
single package.

Stephen.

RE: O'Reilly struts book

I know this might be cheeky, but would it be possible to post the chapters

Subject: Re: O'Reilly struts book

I'm reviewing the final PDF version of the book right
now and will be done with that in a week. It should be
heading for the printer right after that and be out very
soon.

Since several chapters had to be cut for size, the Table
of contents was slightly reorganized and renumbered.
Every chapter except one (chapter 8) was posted that
will be included with the book. The TOC that is shown on
theserverside review site
(http://www.theserverside.com/resources/strutsreview.jsp)
is correct. Of those chapters, only the custom tag
chapter was never posted. This was because I was re-
writing it right up until my deadline.

Look through the available chapters by name, don't worry
about the chapter number. That has been adjusted in the
final version. But just so you won't be disappointed,
the TOC on that page is correct. Several chapters
(unfortunately like security) had to be axed to keep the
book at a respectable size.

Chuck
I see that this won't be out (here in the UK at least) until the end of
 November.

Been reading the review chapters that were available on theserverside, but
there are a couple of chapters missing... does anybody out there have
chapters 8, 15, 17 and 19? Perhaps these were never made available, but it
would be great to have a look at them without having to wait 2 months for
publication.. i promise i will buy the book when it becomes available :~)

 Thanks in advance,

 d

RE: Setup globals per new session

Hello,

You could have an index page that automatically redirects to a struts
action. This action could retrieve the information you require and then
decide which way to direct the user.

Subject: Setup globals per new session

Hi,

Please bear with me, I'm a Struts newbie :) I need to be able to detect
and store some data based upon the request.getServerName() method
result. i.e. When a user connects to my application (which will be
listening on several different hostnames) I need to detect which host
they are connecting to a store this in a session variable.

How can store this data _before_ the user sees anything, i.e. before the
response is created? The key is that this should occur for every new
session, regardless of what actual resource was requested. I need this
mechanism in order to serve up context specific (per hostname) content.

Any help is much appreciated.

Regards,

M

I would possible embed a flag in the session and have each action check for
it's existence. if it doesn't exist, redirect them to the index page.

I always have an action before I go into a page and one to exit a page.

Stephen.

I had thought of this option. But that wouldn't work if the user has
bookmarked a page and went in via the 'back door' if you get my meaning.

most common cause of this that I am aware of is that you have faulty memory.
I would suggest that you run a memory test.

Regards,

Stephen.

Subject: Bug ??

Hello,
I'm having a very strange problem. I'm not sure if it is caused by
Tomcat, JVM or my application.
At first I was using Blackdown-1.3.1_02b-FCS jvm and tomcat 4.0, later
I have upgraded to Sun's JVM
build 1.4.0_01-b03 but the same thing happen. Now I have upgraded Tomcat
to version 4.0.4.
I hope that will fix my problem but if it doesn't what should I do next.

Please see the bottom of the message for the error output.

The server is running RH 7.3.
Thanks,
Robert

Subject: Problem deploying ejb combined with struts

Hi all,

I have a problem deploying my application.

Used configuration:
JBoss 3.0 - Jetty 4.1
EJB 2.0
Servlets - Struts.

When I create my application.xml
I need to add a ejb module otherwise the appserver does not deploy the
ejbs.
But if I do, my struts are no longer accessible.

This is the error :

java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/apache/struts/action/ActionForm

If I leave the ejb module out, the struts compile and are accessible
trough the JSP's but
when trying to access the ejb's (since they are not deployed)

Following error occurs:

javax.naming.NameNotFoundException: LogonSession not bound

Meaning I need to come up with a solution for this.

If anyone has encountered this problem, could you please let me know, maybe
I can send over my xml and .ear file
so you could have a look if my structure is wrong.

Thanks in advance,
Les.

James,

The structure I have described below works fine on an embedded Tomcat 4.0.3
with JBoss 3.0.0.

Search the Jboss archives for classloading under Jboss 3.0.. I believe
you have to wrap the war into a single .ear with the EJBS, and remove
the libs from the war and put them in the ear *only* if you are using
embedded Tomcat with JBoss. Something about how the classloaders work
under the new Servlet 2.3 spec on classloading.

HTH,
James

Hello David,

You have reached one of the limits in Java. You can not have a method that
exceeds 65535 bytes in compiled size.

I suggest that you break up your page.

RE: Error Message Code of a method longer than 65535 bytes

2002-08-13 Thread Stephen . Thompson

Hello David,

Yes this is an issue to do with Java, not just Struts. Any java method can
not compile to larger than 65535 bytes. I think if you refactor your page,
that will solve the issue for you.

Stephen.

Hi Stephen :

Thanks for your information. But I have one more question. Do you
mean this limit has nothing to do with Struts ? It is a pure Java compiler
limitation.

David

RE: CTLX - why do i have to be online

2002-05-22 Thread Stephen . Thompson

Hello,

It could be to do with your DNS resolution. You should have a file called
hosts (btw what OS are you on) that contains a line localhost 127.0.0.1

If you are running on unix/linux you should have a file called
/etc/host.conf. This file determines the order for looking up names.

Hope this helps.

From: Jeremy Scott [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi, im just getting started with struts and am using CTLX.

I have had problems getting started because i have found that i have to be
online for CTLX to access my local host.

If i am not and i try to use a tag lib for the first time i get a stack
trace about an unknown host. As soon as i dialup and are connected it all
works fine.

I thought that it was a firewall problem but it turns out that i have to be
online!

Does anyone know why?

Cheers

The only ways I can think of would be:
A persistent store (ie a database).
You could possibly use a singleton structure IF all the web apps are inside

Anyone have any better suggestions.

Hi..

This is not a struts related question.. but I need to know if there is a
way of sharing information between web applications. for example I have
a common class.. maybe in the server's classpath .. and one web app
accesses it and sets some values.. and then another web app accesses it
and gets those values..

Thanks and Kind Regards

information. Now I must explain how I built it to the other developers in
the office. I was wondering if anyone knew any good free UML diagram
software out there that would run on windows? Being this is still my first

bad karma and all.

Thanks,

PS. Thanks Ida for the answer to my logic:iterate question.

You are using Netscape 4.0 through 4.07 or Netscape 6.0, which we cannot

Help forwarding from one site to another.

2002-02-14 Thread Stephen . Thompson

Hello all,

Upon a successful response from an action class I would like to forward to a
different site. I have tried adding forward name=success
path=http://www.slashdot.org/; / to my struts-config.xml, but it fails.

Is there a nice way of achieving this?

Thanks.

Stephen.

Thanks for that, but the issue is that it is hard coded and doesn't allow
the flexibility the forward tag allows. This flexibility would be
advantageous for a pluggable corporate network.

i would insert in the action code
response.sendRedirect(www.slashdot.org);

cause struts takes all addresses in the struts-config.xml
as they are in the same context. This would be the easiest way
to implement it. Maybe you can also achieve it with the RequestUtils of
Struts, but that i don*t know

Thanks for that. A simple but effective idea. I am wondering if there are
any plans to add, for example, an external tag to the forward statement so
that this would be unnecessary?

Recursive loop through an object collection

2001-11-15 Thread Stephen . Thompson

Hello All,

I am looking for a way to loop through an object structure to retrieve some
information to populate a list box. The object structure looks similar to
the following:

Root
  Object 1
Object 2
Object 3
  Object 4
  Object 5
Object 6
Object 7

I need to retrieve the details and then create a list box containing them.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

Regards,

Stephen.
