www.postgres.org -- PostgreSQL. Free. Has a JDBC driver. Have used this before with Struts. Works well. www.mysql.com -- MySQL. Nice free database. I have used it with only PHP, but I did read that it does have a JDBC driver. (Thanks Paul!) And the subject line is complete enough that it would be easy enough to ignore. As to doing the research, here's a link if anyone is still interested. http://dmoz.org/Computers/Software/Databases/ Since most of write applications that hook up to databases, a Wiki page on the open source DBMS options might be good to have. http://nagoya.apache.org/wiki/apachewiki.cgi?StrutsProjectPages Perhaps Vishal might start one as a summary of this thread. :) -Ted. Re: [OT] Need Free database
Am Dienstag, 25. November 2003 15:48 schrieb Jeff Kyser: do a little homework, buddy. that's a bogus question that is hardly excused by an [OT] prefix. Well. You're right if the focus is entirely Struts and nothing else. The framework does this, the frame- work does that, uh, Validator behaves strange and the like. Strictly ControllerView-minded (as Actions are not part of the Model). But then, most people (like me) do Struts-based web applications, and there's a lot more to that, as we all know. There well may be a reason why virtually all the books I've read about Struts don't stop at this point, but go deeper down the rabbit hole and try to show how to best implement an entire Struts-based solution which, of course, finally ends up at the resource tier. Or: you can't leave databases out at this stage. Ok, this is [OT] when it comes to Struts, but not too far off the spot in the direction of Struts-based Java webapps. Otherwise, all non-Struts taglib discussions would also be [OT] here, at the least, including pager, display, layout, menu and the like. Same would be true, of course, for OR mappers in general. Then, I owe this list being made aware of iBATIS, something I've more or less looked for for a rather long time. Something our Oracle wizards marvel about because thats the first time they can really stretch out their capabilities without breaking the OO layer contracts. Think I would miss it now. Ah, the database. Well, it's the backbone of all things, in the end. For me, it's easy to say: use Oracle, it has the best Java support available, and show me your RAC equivalent, if you can, but it also has a definite price tag, and it may be out of your options if you have a limited budget. For me at least, it's always interesting to hear about other databases, what people recommend in this case and how well they work with Java, ie. JDBC. So after all, I wouldn't object to someone asking for a good free database (there are several good open-sourced ones around nowadays, *not* including MySQL, that's a ledger, not a database). Summing it all up in short, I may find marking that question as [OT] to be fitting, but generally sufficient as well. -- Chris, notoriously known for also answering 'lazy' questions sometimes; and here, too, but please don't bash me for that if you can. -jeff - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
