JSTL 1.0 works with JSP 1.2 containers only, such as Tomcat 4.x.

JSTL 1.1 (upcoming) works with JSP 2.0 containers only, such as Tomcat 5.x.

You can achieve the same with the struts tags:

But it's a bit messier.

Hi,

bean:message works only with PropertyResourceBundles. Those are specified by
name if you don't use the default ones. If you want to print the property of
your Form use instead.

bean:message tag

2003-07-01 Thread ashwani . kalra

hi,
I am trying to print the message as follows using bean tag lib.

Where logonform is the name of the bean in request scope.

Here is what the javadoc says about the name attribute:

name :Specifies the attribute name of the bean whose property is accessed
to retrieve the value specified by property (if specified). If property is
not specified, the value of this bean itself will be used as the message
resource key

But i get the error that "Property for message key must be a String"

Am i missing something ?

TIA

Dynamic Messages possible with bean:message tag?

2002-08-28 Thread Mark Silva

Hello,

I am trying to use the ApplicationResources file to display titles, messages, etc. I
would like to create these messages dynamically based on a request parameter.

For example

I would lie to dynamically change the "AuthenticationReport" based on a request
variable. This way I can use a single page for all reports, and all international
messages too! Is this possible? Otherwise I may have to create a different page for
each report. Seems like a very useful feature.

Thanks,
Mark

The problem is that my image changes depending on the error message - so I need
a way of determining which image to display.

Oh well, I do everything from the design to the Action servlets, and stop
before the EJBs - so I guess it's only really a concern if someone else was
doing the design.

Matt,

what I'm currently doing is something like this: In, say, x.jsp I write

Yeah, it is rather uncomfortable--and only necessary if you really need
to have support for i18n--but I can be sure that after a designer
changed the page design there are no disturbing effects coming from my
language definitions. The designer can concentrate on the .jsp file and
does not need to care about language--in the ideal case ;-)

The same concept should work for your table header definitions.

Re: bean:message tag

2001-08-20 Thread Matt Raible

Tom - it seems that you are correct, my html does show up correctly.

The reason I have html in my properties file is because I want to display
certain images with my messages.

Let's take the following key for example:

error.password.mismatch=Invalid username and/or password,
please try again.

I can probably move ... into my jsp page, but I'm already
using error.header and error.footer with html, so this seemed natural:

errors.header=
errors.footer=

I could probably also parameterize my so that this could be a
different key in my properties file, but then I'd have to add a little more
code to my action classes (or validation.xml file).

This brings up another point - I wish I could dynamically set the path to my
image, using a scriptlet or tag, meaning replace "/dc/common" with
"<%=pathToImages%>" - but doesn't seem to work.

We get all our static files through the webserver (vs. appserver) - that's why
I can't get it from the war.

Matt,

I'm not sure whether I understood the problem correctly, but I did the
same thing for a while, and it worked for me without "flush" or other
tricks. I simply included the message via , not
matter whether there was HTML in it or not.

Note, however, that it can be problematic to mix layout and content
information. This was the big disadvantage of HTML, and people tried to
address it with XML and stylesheets, making the two independent of each
other. I'd recommend putting layout information, such as , ,
etc. in the .jsp, whereas the .properties file should only contain
content. This way your translators don't need to know HTML. Of course,
we might open up another can of worms here if we don't have the same
page layout for all languages.

I am using and I want to have HTML in my
key.name string, such as:

key.name=Hello World

So ideally, I could make my tag resemble , but there is no filter attribute on this tag?

How can I do this, do I have to use , and if so, how do I get the

bean:message tag and filter attribute

2001-07-29 Thread Matt Raible

I am trying to get HTML code from my properties file into my page using the
following:

This works fine, except when there is HTML code in the errors.footer key. Then
adding the following "filter" was my fix for a while:

However, now I'm using iPlanet SP3, which uses the Jasper JSP compiler. Jasper
won't compile the page because filter is not not an attribute pf "message" in
the struts-bean.tld. So how do I get HTML code in my page from the properties
file now?

Can anyone assist me on this?

Here's the exact error:

Attribute filter invalid according to the specified TLD

If you want to use the tag, you will need to ensure that a
MessageResources instance is stored as a servlet context attribute under
key "org.apache.struts.action.MESSAGE". This is what the controller
servlet does for you automatically for the application resources. If you
don't want to use the controller servlet, you will need to create such an
object yourself.

Bundle attribute for bean:message tag???

2001-04-09 Thread Darryl

Hi all,

I'm wanting to use the tag in an application where
I'm not using the ActionServlet and therefore, not setting up the
servlet specs in my web.xml file. Currently when the JSP page executes
the tag it tells me:

 javax.servlet.jsp.JspException: Cannot find message resources
 under key org.apache.struts.action.MESSAGE

I thought I could fix the problem by specifying the bundle attribute of
the MessageTag class and setting it to the location in my
CLASSPATH where the properties file resides but it still doesn't find
the file. I have specified the file with a .properties extension and
double-checked that it is in my CLASSPATH at the specified location with
the name ApplicationResources.properties.

Any ideas? Anyone run into this before? I did search the messages I have
stored as well as scoured the Struts website but couldn't find anything
on this matter so I hope I'm not repeating something that was dealt with
previously.

thanks in advance,
Darryl

bean:message tag exception

2001-02-21 Thread John Nikolai

We are getting the following exception when running the struts-example
application:

javax.servlet.jsp.JspException: Missing resources attribute
org.apache.struts.action.
MESSAGE
 at org.apache.struts.taglib.MessageTag.doStartTag(MessageTag.java:360)
at /index.jsp._jspService(/index.jsp.java:58) (JSP page line 9)

 at com.evermind.server.http.ef.s1(JAX)
 at com.evermind.server.http.ef.do(JAX)
 at com.evermind.util.f.run(JAX)

Setup:
  - Checked-out latest source from cvs this morning
  - Using Orion server
  - Other struts applications are working ok, including: struts-test and
struts-template.

I added some debug code to ActionServlet to see what is happening. Seems an
PropertyMessageResources object is created but immediately removed with a
call to destroyAction( ) before the example application is ran. Any solutions?

What is the difference between bean:message and struts:message? The taglib
definitions seem to be equivalent. I tried both tags and they both gave the
same error message.

Thanks,
  - John
