Re: [Sugar-devel] First draft of proposal SugarLabs Social - Gsoc'18

2018-03-22 Thread James Cameron
Thanks for the proposal, Daman. I've reviewed it carefully.

We have had a Discourse instance Social Help [1] created during a GSoC
2014 project [2], and it was not used much; your proposal does not
mention either (a) this history, (b) how the Discourse instance will
be decommissioned, (c) how the Sugar desktop Social Help feature [3]
will be deprecated [4], or (d) how your project will avoid the same
fate.

Part of the explanation from the Wiki is "A competitive proposal must
include some evidence that the approach taken will result in some use
-- just because we build it doesn't mean they will come." [5].

You might also consider how your project is different to Facebook,
Instagram, or Twitter. Why can't these wider services be used?

Is the real problem a failure of collective action of Sugar Labs
contributors to concentrate their online social activity on a single
platform? If so, how will another project help? See [6] for a view
on collective action problems by Anne Schwenkenbecher, Lecturer in
Philosophy, Murdoch University.

I've reviewed this proposal and I think it is fine. It may benefit
from a list of activities, if only to show you've estimated the effort
involved. But I don't think estimating is easy.

Sugar will continue to be available as a desktop environment once
Linux distributions have dropped support for GStreamer 0.10 and GTK+
2.

I'm not able to answer this question from perspective of GSoC as I'm
not a mentor or organisation administrator.

However, my perspective of release manager; there will be no
significant impact from such a delay.

Your work so far on porting activities to GTK+ 3 has been very good,
so I don't expect any significant problems that can't be solved by
asking questions or more coding.

I've reviewed and have some comments;

- where the proposal template asks "please send us URLs", and "some
other demonstration of your work", you might add your GitHub profile
URL and some of the pull requests you've worked on recently. You do
mention these much later, but it is good to answer the question.

(because although some of us know what you've been doing, the Google
Open Source team won't know this until you tell them).

- use terms consistently and correctly, and avoid unnecessary
abbreviations; e.g. "pull request" instead of "PR", "Sugar" instead
of "sugar", "Sugar Toolkit" instead of {sugar-toolkit,
sugar-toolkit-gtk3}, "Ubuntu" instead of "ubuntu", "Fedora" instead
  of "fedora", "GTK+ 2" instead of {GTK2, GTK+ 2.x, Gtk, Gtk+},
"GStreamer" instead of "GST", and (perhaps) "PyGObject API" instead
  of "PyGI",

(because the inconsistent use within the document, and against
external references, makes it harder to read).

- in your list of activities, use the value for name from
activity.info rather than the GitHub repository name,

(because this is the name by which the activity is best known to
  other people,)

- the activity Labyrinth has a GTK+ 3 port already, and there are
several repositories that are not proper clones or forks. See my
  audit in https://github.com/sugarlabs/laybrinth-activity/issues/1

- you might plan how to encourage testing of your work by Sugar Labs
  community,

- you might mention how your work will be affected by or benefit from
the Port to Python 3 project,

Look very nice your proporal but try to apply a litle revision in a
aplication like block or other because in my experiencie a migration always
request some time to test and may the last aplication migrated have some
bug hard to solve.

Please try in advace review two applivation and found the challenge step
which you will resolve in more time or apply a refactoring.

After that may be you need reduce the activiy number to migrate.

[Sugar-devel] GSoC 2018 Application - Alexandru-Cosmin Mihai

2018-03-22 Thread Alex Cosmin Mihai
 Hello!

My name is Alexandru Mihai and I first got in contact with the Sugar Labs
community last December. Since then I have ported an activity to GTK3 and I
have started working on porting another one (flipsticks).

I would love to participate in Google Summer of Code 2018 with Sugar Labs
by working on the "Just say no to GTK2" project.

Unfortunately, my university semester ends on the 15th of June (official
link in Romanian
),
but I do believe that I will still be able to complete this project if I am
accepted. I have written my first draft of the proposal which is available
here: https://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/User:Alexmihai .

I would like to kindly ask you to give me a review of my proposal and tips
on how I could improve it and also to provide me with an answer regarding
the impact of this project on the Sugar Labs community, as requested in the
proposal template.

I hope that the fact that I will not be able to start working on this
project from the 14th of May will not be a problem, if I will be accepted.

Thank you very much for your time!

Alex Mihai
