2019-03-28 Thread Alex Perez

Sumit,

Great questions, and they're particularly relevant at this phase/age of
the existence of Sugar Labs. They certainly can't be answered in a
single e-mail, however I think this is a perfect conversation to have,
particularly on our IAEP mailing list, which is our general purpose
mailing list.

Sumit Srivastava wrote on 3/28/19 5:00 PM:
Do we aim to be like Red Hat? Canonical? No match? Who are we closest
to? Who do we aim to be?

Speaking as an Oversight Board member, I do not believe it is in the
interest of Sugar Labs to attempt to emulate a company like Red Hat and
Canonical. These companies have hundreds/thousands of paid employees,
and their organizational structure is a product of the needs of their
corporate customers.

Right now, we have a few existential problems on the horizon, one of
which is a long term problem, but which we now need to address in the
short-term: Maintainability. Sugar has a lot of "technical debt", and
unless we can complete our goal of 100% Python 3 compatibility of all
core Sugar libraries and the toolkit, we risk the loss of being able to
be run as a desktop environment on current versions of Linux, due to our
reliance on Python 2. Since Python 2 has been on life support for many,
many years, and is only nine months from being officially retired, it
will no longer be maintained by the Python Foundation, nor included by
default in the next versions of Fedora and Ubuntu. You can read further
details about the sunsetting of Python 2 at https://pythonclock.org

I understand that these are a lot of questions. You can also share
relevant mail archive links if they're available.

I also understand that we're a non profit and the organisations I
mentioned might not be a close match.
I personally do not think the core entity of Sugar Labs should be a
commercial entity, but non-profit organizations are completely entitled
to be profitable, and many are quite  for the profitable. Personally, I
would like to see the development of a federated model, where we have
country/regionally-centered "chapters" of Sugar Labs, with Sugar Labs
itself taking the in-the-field feedback from our distributed user base,
and incorporating and triaging suggestions/feedback,

Essense of my question: If we could achieve anything, what would we want?
I would love to see a world where Sugar was used extensively, worldwide,
by children in the primary school age range, with a wide range of
actively-maintained activities, relevant to the current curricula of a
variety of countries, and of interest to elementary school teachers,
across all socioeconomic groups. How we get there is the real question,
assuming we want to, and have the organizational will to do so.

As for what our "long term vision" is, I honestly don't think we have
one at this point, and we should fix that, which is one of the reasons
why I chose to run for the Sugar Labs Oversight Board. Our next meeting
is next Friday, on 2019-04-05 at 20:00 UTC, on IRC, in the
#sugar-meeting channel on FreeNode. Feel free to join us and observe, as
well as ask questions before and after the official meeting commences.

Re: [Sugar-devel] ML idea discussion

2019-03-28 Thread Ahmed ElSabbagh
I must admit James that I have don't know for sure how performance could be
measured and I have been trying to find proper way to measure it.
One thing I know for sure however is that measurement units are supposed to
be standardized and rarely change
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_performance.
The problem either way would to turn whatever performance unit given into a
unit of time given the size of the data set before starting the training
process, and this is my point of research at the moment.

[Sugar-devel] GSoC proposal : creating new activity for Sugarizer

2019-03-28 Thread Sanjana Mundhra
Hey all!

I am Sanjana Mundhra, a third year B.Tech student from The LNM Institute of
Information Technology, Jaipur.

Sugarizer has been providing some amusing learning activities for children
and I hope to add mine to the list. What I came up with is a word search
game with a few tweaks and variations.

The game consists of letters of words placed in a grid. The objective of
this puzzle is to find and mark all the horizontally, vertically, or
diagonally placed words hidden inside the box. Click and drag over a word
to check it off the list. They are fun to play, but also educational- in
fact, many teachers make use of them.

This will encourage the children to:

   - *Explore new topics.* Many word search puzzles have a theme to which
all the hidden words are related. Some of these are just for fun, but a
*topic* can also introduce essential vocabulary that every child should
   possess.
   - *Improve spelling.* Young minds can learn new words and their
*spellings* by intensively searching for them, letter by letter, in the
puzzle. In fact they are rehearsing the spelling over and over in their
minds as they look for the letters the word contains.
   - *Improve concentration.* A valuable skill, concentration is required
to successfully complete this puzzle. It encourages the brain to stay
   focused.
   - *Enhance visual acuity.* Eyes that are trained regularly to look for
small details will be stronger and more effective in many situations.
   - *Form strategies.* Form various algorithms and strategies to search
quickly for words without even realising it.

We can add diagonal & backward written words at higher difficulty levels.
Often a list of the hidden words is provided, but more challenging puzzles
may let the player figure them out. On a more advanced level, word searches
are good ways to demonstrate the use of searching algorithms. Other
variations include solving given math puzzles and searching for the answer
in the grid.

I am well acquainted with React js, a technology widely used in this
organization and hope to contribute to it this summer as my GSOC 2019
project. After studying the present activities in Sugarizer, I feel its a
place where learning meets fun and I think this activity will help take
this trend onward. This is just a rough idea of my proposal, all reviews
and suggestions are most welcome.

Sanjana Mundhra

[Sugar-devel] Idea for creating a new Sugar Activity

2019-03-28 Thread Manan Goel
Hey Guys!
I would like to present my idea for a new sugar activity. Being a
bioinformatics enthusiast I would like to add a few applications a few
bioinformatics based algorithms. For example, one of the things I plan to
do is to construct phylogenetic trees (They show evolutionary relationships
between different organisms using their DNA patterns which are openly
available on the internet).

As a personal experience when I saw it for the first time, it blew my mind
that there is something inherent which makes us different from other
organisms.

I also have a couple of other ideas in mind for the activity.

Re: [Sugar-devel] To Cameron: ML idea discussion

2019-03-28 Thread Ahmed ElSabbagh
As for hardware, I am not sure how strong should it be to run a training
model for Neural Network or any other classifier.

As for internet access, the training can be done offline no problem, it can
be slow depending on the size of the data set they add, it could be a
feature to try predict or estimate the amount of time it will take them
given a minimum hardware specification, the problem however will be the
lack of pictures to use, so a minimum number of photos and categories can
be provided offline at any given time, with other pictures and categories
available downloadable whenever internet is available.
