Re: [Sugar-devel] Project Porting Telepathy Bindings

2019-04-04 Thread James Cameron
Welcome Habeeb.

We have a project idea for GSoC for porting to Python 3, which
contains the port from Telepathy static bindings to TelepathyGLib.

https://github.com/sugarlabs/GSoC/blob/master/Ideas-2019.md#port-sugar-and-core-activities-to-python-3

We've been tracking this subset of the porting on this GitHub project;

https://github.com/orgs/sugarlabs/projects/4

The above contains several merged pull requests, in the column "Done".
Commits within these pull requests give a very detailed view of the
work done so far.

You can also see the pull requests in progress, and issues for some of
those yet to be done.

There are also activities that need porting that have no issue yet.

In general, this porting requires;

* ability to install and run Sugar, on multiple virtual machines or
  laptops, in order to test the Sugar collaboration feature,

* network programming debugging skills,

Very beneficial would be;

* ability to read through Telepathy source code, which is written in
  C,

* ability to enable Telepathy debug logging features,

* using tcpdump or dbus-monitor to check theories.

You can find guidance for how to contribute to Sugar Labs here;

https://github.com/sugarlabs/sugar-docs/blob/master/src/contributing.md

Re: [Sugar-devel] SpellCheck for write activity project

2019-04-04 Thread James Cameron
Thanks Alex.

Write activity is based on AbiWord, and already has built-in spell
check feature. I had guessed Jake was asking about a JavaScript
module, as part of the [Write activity for Sugarizer] idea.

https://github.com/sugarlabs/GSoC/blob/master/Ideas-2019.md#write-activity-for-sugarizer

I've no idea what would be an appropriate module to use. A search and
selection could be part of the project.

Jake,

I would personally like to encourage you to not re-implement the wheel.
Aspell has been around for a long time, quite possibly longer than
you've been alive, and has python bindings, and a C API:

Re: [Sugar-devel] Doubt regarding proposal draft

2019-04-04 Thread James Cameron
G'day Aniket,

You ask if you should submit a draft or final proposal on Google
Summer of Code web site. It's up to you.

On #gsoc it was said just now you can resubmit a final proposal up
to the deadline.

Your review audience changes based on your decision. Let me explain.

Sugar Labs community of developers congregates on the mailing list.

A much smaller group have offered to be mentors. Our list of project
ideas shows who these people are.

A much much smaller group are registered with Google as mentors for
the organisation. At the moment it's Walter, Lionel, Rahul, Devin,
Michaël and myself. More will be added once we know how many slots we
are given by Google, and what proposals are accepted.

If you submit final now, please also send a PDF to the mailing list,
unless it hasn't changed since your last PDF.

If you submit draft now, you have to remember to submit final for the
9th April deadline.

Re: [Sugar-devel] [GSOC] Proposals for Create new set of activities

2019-04-04 Thread James Cameron
We have 17 draft or final proposals. Most have also been published on
sugar-devel@, but not all. None have addressed the Scratch related
ideas.

That's fine. It's up to the students what they want to work on. We
gave them many ideas. If Scratch were so important, we would have
given them less ideas.

I don't think there's anything terribly wrong with the ideas that
mention Scratch. Port Sugarizer activities to Sugar has the most
detailed description;

https://github.com/sugarlabs/GSoC/blob/master/Ideas-2019.md#port-sugarizer-activities-to-sugar

I do think we are wrong to assume and hope that a student will adopt
an idea.  If I were a student, I'd note;

* it's not a new thing, but a port of an existing thing,

* the technical complexity, or challenge, especially the work that
  would be required in WebKit to support audio, (Browse, #85),

* the history of little progress in the code that needs to be
  maintained,

* that few of the mentors have made any successful steps toward the
  goal, and;

* there's been more hot air (talk) than action (coding),

I don't think we should be complaining about what students have failed
to propose. We should be encouraging instead.

So to any students out there thinking of a first, second, or third
proposal, consider "Port Sugarizer activities to Sugar". ;-)

Re: [Sugar-devel] GSoC Proposal for "New Sugar Activity"

2019-04-04 Thread Tony Anderson
It appears that you are making one activity out of two. It might be
easier to construct two separate Sugar activities.

The second activity seems to depend on internet access. Perhaps
two-thirds of our users have limited or no access to the internet.

Perhaps it is possible to construct the activity to access data
alternatively from a usb drive (Storage on an XO laptop is very limited).

Keep in mind that our users do not speak English as a native language
and are certainly not familiar with Latin. The Latin names are fair
since they are equally unfamiiar to everyone. However, these names
identify a set of objects with similar characteristics. Call it a canine
or a dog, it is still referring to a four-legged mammal, etc. However,
the characteristics of many phyla are not familiar to the average user.

Consider in making your activities how understandable any text used will
be. Users who encounter problems, hit the stop button. The mantra is
'low floor, high ceiling'.

 A couple of comments:
 (1) it is a bit thin on details of how you'd implement the app itself.
 What would the interface look like? what sorts of controls would there be?
 (2) Also, in brief, how does your algorithm work? How CPU intensive is
 it? Realistic to run on low-end laptops?

 There was some work done at RIT about 5 years ago on a sign-language
 chat for Sugar -- never completed. Might be worth investigating. If I can,
 I will find you a link.

First of all, let me introduce myself.I am Mohammed Rishan and I'm
currently an IT undergraduate at university of Kelaniya, Kelaniya, Sri
Lanka.I have experience in Java, Docker, Maven, Gradle, C/C++, Python and
HTML/CSS/JS through working on university projects and personal projects.
I'm interested in contributing to Sugar Labs this summer as I'm hoping to
put my free time into good use to help out the development community.

I read GSoC 2019 ideas in the Sugar Labs Github page.

I would really like work on with the following idea.

   -

   Create a Sugar Dashboard[1]

[1]
https://github.com/sugarlabs/GSoC/blob/master/Ideas-2019.md#create-a-sugar-dashboard

Is it OK to make the GSoC 2019 proposal with mentioned idea?

Thank you!

2019-04-04 Thread Jake Scarlet
Would it be preferable if I used an existing library for the spellcheck
feature or if I created one by myself

[Sugar-devel] Doubt regarding proposal draft

2019-04-04 Thread aniket mathur
On GSoC official site there is an option to submit a draft for review
before final pdf upload, but my proposal is already reviewed twice through
the mailing list, so should I skip that part and submit a final proposal?

Re: [Sugar-devel] [GSOC] Proposals for Create new set of activities

2019-04-04 Thread Chihurumnaya Ibiam
I'm happy to see the students bring in their own ideas too, I'm saying
these activity ideas are being neglected,
as all proposals suggested so far have been pointing towards creating
something new, while that's great we also
need to improve on what already exists.
Although there wasn't a specified number of activities to be created but I
don't think creating just one activity would be
great as proposals so far are only referring to creating just one new
activity, while the idea says a "new set of activities".
For Scratch, there's also a mention in the "Port sugarizer activities to
Sugar" idea but so far I've not seen a proposal for that.

2019-04-04 Thread Rahul Bothra
Thanks for the suggestion.

I disagree. I am happy to see the students bringing in their own ideas for
activities.
FWIW, we have already mentioned the suggested ideas, as well as the
resources to understand user experience. I would like to give students the
freedom to decide what they want to work on
