Re: [Sugar-devel] New SoaS-on-XO-1 build done: soasxo57

2009-08-22 Thread Art Hunkins
Thanks for the info, Martin.

I hadn't realized that both your effort (Soas-on-XO-1) and - I presume -
Fedora11-on-XO, are optionally complete OS replacements for Sugar on the
XO-1.

I also assume that (an updated) Sugar is included in both these system
upgrades, and that we might well expect ongoing upgrades. (I know - no
guarantees.)

This image does not have /boot/vmlinuz or /vmlinuz. There is only
 /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.30.5-28.rc2.fc11.i586

Fixed in soasxo58. Two kernel packages are being installed by
kickstart/anaconda: OLPC's and stock Fedora's. OLPC's olpc-bootanim
does not provide /sbin/plymouth, which some standard dracut module(s)
require. The stock kernel is installed second, so when its %post
scripts try to create /boot/{vmlinuz,initrd.img}, they fail. The
/boot symlinks are left nonexistent.

For now I have worked around this by installing the OLPC kernel
_again_ in kickstart/anaconda's %post, but that's a nasty kludge.

Also, there is no initrd or olpcrd (that I could find).

Fixed in soasxo58 - same problem as above.

Thanks for trying it out. I would like to rig up a virtual machine
and some automated tests so that you don't have to find this out the
hard way.

the above command is incorrect. the last hyphen is extraneous.
(it tells tar to try and extract a file named '-' from the
archive. but it does all the work of reading, and looks like
it's doing something, and if you miss or ignore the error
message, you won't realize anything's wrong until you figure out
that the reason you can't boot the card is because nothing has
been written to it. i'll never make that mistake three times
again. :-) (btw, it's in README.txt too.)

Oops - corrected. It was correctly absent from my local shell script
:).

the failure of suspend/release in this distro seems to be
directly related to the absence of a getty on the serial console.
if the getty is present, everything works normally. if the getty
is absent, the system won't resume.

Confirmed. Thanks very much for finding this out.

Some quick feedback. Just downloaded:

http://people.sugarlabs.org/~mtd/soas-xo1/soasxo57.crc
http://people.sugarlabs.org/~mtd/soas-xo1/soasxo57.img

...and ran OF copy-nand u:\ soasxo57.img to erase and install onto XO
NAND. Typed boot, and get the error:

Boot device: \pci\nandfl...@c:\boot\vmlinuz Arguments: ro
root=mtd0 rootfstype=jffs2 console=ttyS0,115200 console=tty0
fbcon=font:SUN12x22
buf...@ffb69098:36:
Can't open boot device

Same error on power cycle.

I'm just downloading the last F11_for_XO-1 (os-5) to try a re-flash
with that.

boot device is actually the initrd - there's a cut paste bug in my
olpc.fth that does

 ${DN}${PN}\olpcrd.img to ramdisk

...instead of

 ${DN}${PN}\initrd.img to ramdisk

I've fixed this in git and will publish a new build overnight.

But this error should not prevent boot for NAND installs, as the
kernel has jffs2 compiled in. So I'm not sure why you're seeing a
hang.

I've been booting from a USB drive (not NAND), and usb drivers are
modular so the initrd is really required. In the forthcoming build
I've also added rootwait so that the LABEL=OLPCRoot argument can be
used effectively in this case.

I will also test the SD behaviour later but would appreciate any
feedback on that.

Thanks for trying this out.
